Yay or Nay - should Roy marry Cathy?

Next week in Coronation Street, we'll see Roy face his discomfort over marrying Cathy. Roy has a heart to heart with Brian Packham, who's making a return to the show next week.

So, if Roy's having misgivings over marrying Cathy, what do we fans think about it?  I think this has been doing very well as a storyline, showing Roy's insecurity.  His fears about marrying Cathy are our fears. We all still love Hayley, as does Roy.  But we want Roy to be happy too. And yet, is Cathy the person to make Roy as happy as we want him to be?

So, there we have it. Should Roy marry Cathy - Yay or Nay? What do YOU think?

  1. I think that Roy doesn't know how to be happy at present. His loyalty to Hayley is confusing his Love for Cathy. And, I do think he loves Cathy. Roy has several hurdles to cross before he can allow himself to be happy. But, I reckon he will in the end. He is sharing his flat and his bed with Cathy and he was happy with that. A wedding shouldn't be that much of a leap. But, it's Roy and thats why we love him.

  2. A big Nay! At first, I thought Cathy might be a good fit for Roy, but the addition of Alex and all the contrived ways that Cathy, and by connection Roy, has been tangled in that storyline has totally convinced me that she isn't the right one. No reason at all for everyone to be paired up.....it's not reflective of society. Let him be single and explore his male friendships/community volunteerism that he used to be so involved in. Don't mess with Roy any further, please :)

  3. I liked the idea at first, but then there was the Cathy/Nessa fiasco, then Alex, and all the aggro that came with that, it feels like they've thrown a lot at Roy in a short space of time. Too much too fast.

  4. I don't dislike Cathy, she's ok, but I don't think she's right for Roy, too bossy, too controlling and she had no right moving her nephew in without consulting Roy first. She does have a house of her own after all.
She has nothing in common with him. Unlike Mary, who would make a good close friend and caring companion.
They're both a little odd and would understand each other's little foibles.
I don't think Roy needs to be married.

  5. I'm in the minority but never liked Hayley. She was no saint, remember her abandoning Roy to go to Africa? Hiding the fact she had a son? Bullying him into agreeing to her assisted suicide? But like all of us, a three dimensional person with good and bad points.
I do like Cathy, although the Alex story grates on my nerves.
But does Roy need to marry her? No. why bother at their age.

I agree, I don't think Roy needs to be married either. And yes, Mary would make a better friend to him. Not sure I like Cathy and I certainly don't like her nephew. Cathy is too nosy and interfering; I didn't like the way she was wigging in on someone's (can't remember who) conversation a few days ago and she butted in with her twopenn'orth.

  7. I haven't warmed to Cathy. I think the writers wanted to show Roy as growing strong and independent after Hayley's death. He would have then been able to provide security to someone vulnerable like Cathy. It hasn't worked out like that. Roy didn't get the chance to become a pillar of the community, offering his time in the community centre amongst other things. He was thrust straight into a relationship with a woman who hasn't really given him anything. Her sister, her nephew, her house, her OCD - it's all one way. In psychobabble, Roy is the rescuer and Cathy is the victim. That makes for a lousy marriage. I hope Cathy goes back to her house and takes Alex with her. Roy will be ready to marry in a couple of years.

  8. A number of months back, I would've said yes, but with everything that has happened in between, we saw that Cathy is perhaps not as deserving of his companionship as she initially might have been. So, it's a nay from me now. Let Roy be on his own for a while, it suits him, and he'd probably be the first to agree with that.

  9. Cathy is like a petulant child when she doesn't get her way. With Roy's tendency to see the world typically unwavering black and white that doesn't bode well. There will be a million instances where they choose different sides and she will become the sulky wife.

  10. Nay. I just don't see the emotional match with them. Cathy is constantly missing the mark with him, forgetting his birthday and the trip to Blackpool come to mind but there have been others. These mistakes are bigger than say not knowing he hates broccoli, these are intimate details that a caring partner of a sensitive person would know or at least investigate before blundering forward. Two talented actors but mismatched characters.

  11. He'd be settling which, arguably, is exactly what happened with Hayley as well. They had next to nothing in common and she always got her way, often at the expense of Roy's own.

Cathy is pretty much the same, and I feel like Roy was drawn to her because of those similarities to use her as a substitute for Hayley, even if he didn't consciously realize it. But the cracks are showing and it would be a huge mistake for him to marry her.

  12. Nooooo! For all the reasons outlined above. Would be glad to see the back of Cathy and Alex, it's not as if they've nowhere to go. Roy will be fine on his own, with friends like Ken, Brian, Mary and Yazmeen,

  13. Like others here, I would have said yes six months ago, but not now. I wouldn't blame anyone, especially not Alex, since Roy seems to really care for him (more than Cathy at times). But the two have grown apart, not closer together. It's like Cathy was a rebound relationship, and now Roy's realizing that he doesn't really love her forever. But he doesn't know how to extricate himself.
I'm thinking scriptwriters will put Yasmeen and Roy together six months down the road...they're about the same age. Not sure how they'd work, though, both are pretty unbending in their principles. They both need someone slightly more malleable. Mary's way too young for Roy, too zany too.

  14. A big no from me. I absolutely hate the way Cathy has brought her nephew (who is trouble) into Roy's tiny apartment and actually had the nerve to ask him to buy Alex a flat. I am watching in Canada and from the previews I've seen looks like Alex is moving Gemma into the apartment as well. Come on! Like another poster stated Cathy owns a house - high time she and Alex moved into it and let Roy live in peace! If he marries her he will be in for a load of hearbreak!

  15. Just no. Cathy is not worthy of Roy. I too would like to see Roy on his own for awhile. I do disagree, however, with the poster who said that Mary is too young for Roy. In years, maybe, but not in outlook. I feel they are kindred spirits, in a way. Age is just a number. Other things matter more.

  16. Nay, no, nope. I like Cathy - but they seem like friends, not lovers.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm a no as well. I do like Cathy but I think Roy would be happier if they didn't live in the same flat and he could have his own space. Knowing his character as we do, I don't believe he would marry her if he didn't think it was right.

  18. I can't picture Roy with Mary, not unless her scary days are truly behind her. Remember how she tried to sabotage Roy and Hayley's wedding? How she went all Misery on Norris (maybe Andy better watch out...)? How she showed no compassion for and turned her back on Roy after he injured Gary during the botched robbery of the cafe?

If they intend to keep Mary's character as she is now, that would be one thing, I quite like her and see her as a good friend for Roy, but it's hard to forget those other storylines.

I agree with others on here that Roy should be single for a while. He's learned that he could have a relationship if he wanted one. Ending it because he knows it's not right for him will do more to strengthen his confidence and character than pairing him up with anyone, whether that person is "right" for him or not. It would show that he's learning to love himself, which I often wonder if he truly does.

  19. No for me too, everyone above has summed up why.
Blackburn said he wouldn't rush into giving Roy a romance too - yet another ill-judged mistake from his era.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I also don't think Roy should marry Cathy simply because I don't think Cathy even loves Roy but wants to marry him so she and Alex could have financial security.
I mean before her ill timed marriage proposal which she talked about with Alex[?!],Cathy commented how they were a 'package deal' and she wasn't kidding!
Roy initially turned her down but a honorable man, changed his mind after Cathy was hit by Carla only to have doubts again due to Cathy's and Alex's demands the last few months.
I do want to see Roy being portrayed as the 'villian'though if he decides he cannot marry Cathy after all.

  21. Nay. I think Roy needs to be able to have female friendship without a romantic angle. It's getting rather old that every male/female friendship ends up becoming romantic in one way or another. It's possible for people just to be friends and nothing more. Let Roy be Roy and keep Cathy as a friend.

Plus, I can't honestly see Roy getting married again. I feel like he might think it insulting to Hayley's memory.

  22. No. I think Roy needs to be single for a little bit more.

Have Cathy fall for Brian but when they leave Alex stays with Roy. I like Roy and Alex

  23. Get rid of her and Alex.

  24. Re: Amber, the other male female friendship I would like to see is Ken and Yasmeen. They have so many common interests but I don't see either of them looking for romance. Let them go to the theater and just have some Ned fun.

  25. I am hoping that Nessa, who is invited to the wedding, will do the usual soap wedding damage so they don't get married and then go their separate ways. Brian Packham would be much better sharing Roy's flat than Cathy & Alex. Heck let them all stay single for awhile and just enjoy each other's company.

  26. I just don't see any spark between these two. I definitely don't think they should be married.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nay...Cathy is not on the right wave length for Roy and she puts herself and/or Alex first. Even to the extent of pushing for a deposit for a flat. Sensible Roy - he is not going to lose his savings.Lots has been said on this site and many good points made. Her house for example. ??

  28. A big nay from me too. I just haven't taken to Cathy and its all happened far too quickly

  29. Roy's no Sean Bean anyway? ;)

  30. It's always been no from me too. For many of the reasons mentioned by others. I suspect that the wedding won't go ahead, as anon above states, it is soap law.

  31. Nay. Although I liked Hayley, she was rather secretive and,at times, not particularly considerate of Roy's feelings or principles, as someone pointed out the fact that Cathy is a lot like that probably made her attractive to Roy.
There's a difference though, I never doubted that Hayley loved Roy. She knew about his hobbies, embraced his neighborhood and neighbors in a caring way, etc. She just had many things to settle as well as be Roy's wife.
From the start, I got the impression all Cathy cared about was herself. I'm harping on this point again but she isn't at Roy's because he wanted to live with her. Her hoarding made her house dangerous and she was only supposed to stay with him while she cleared out her own place. Instead of that, and even when Alex needed a place, I've never heard of her lifting a finger towards getting back there. Being with Roy seems like a way for her to escape having to sort her life out and it doesn't help that she's piling on her nephew, sister, faithless husband issues as well.
As Hayley was dying she seemed to be pushing for Roy to be with Mary. They did seem like a good match but then the show went in this direction with a new character and the more we know her, the less pleasant she seems.
Roy needs someone who brings him out of his shell not someone who takes advantage of the fact that he isn't one to complain.

  32. I never did like the Roy and Cathy pairing. There is just something lacking between them. I like the actress and I think the character is good but I just do not like the pairing. The Sharif and Yasmeen story line would be a good opportunity to expand the Cathy character: her and Yasmeen could become good friends because of their shared experiences with unfaithful deceitful husbands, etc. The Cathy character is strong, though somewhat selfish and perhaps could be eventually allowed to realise this and decide that another marriage is not a good idea. A deep friendship with Roy would be preferable, he needs to be on his own for a while.

  33. Heck NAY. Without any reference to Hayley, nor expecting Roy to keep holding a torch for her. There is something about Cathy I have never trusted and her worming her way into Roy's home, along with her irritant relative Alex, has put me right off her. It's not that I don't want to see Roy in a relationship, just not with Cathy.

  34. 'Roy and Cathy's rolls' don't have the same ring to it. 'Rolls Royston' sounds better :)
