Happy Birthday Sue Nicholls!

On behalf of everyone at the Coronation Street Blog I'd like to wish the wonderful Sue Nicholls a very happy birthday! Sue, of course, plays the fragrant Audrey Roberts on Coronation Street and has been a regular fixture since 1985, having first appeared way back in April 1979.

The intervening years have seen the flighty Aud mature into one of the best Corrie matriarchs, presiding over the ramshackle Platt family. As long-suffering mum to Gail, Audrey has weathered a fair few storms. Sue works so well with Helen Worth and their mother/daughter relationship is one of the highlights and reliable constants of Corrie. Over the years Sue has also formed delightful double acts with the late, great Bryan Mosley as screen husband Alf and the lovely Amanda Barrie as her best friend and fellow gadabout Alma.

Away from the Street, Sue has appeared in many other well known shows, from four years in the infamous soap Crossroads in the 1960s to roles in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Rentaghost and The Professionals. Off screen, Sue has been married to the actor Mark Eden since 1993. Mark memorably played baddie Alan Bradley in Corrie back in the 1980s.

Audrey Roberts has long been my favourite Corrie character and I hope Sue will grace our favourite soap for many more years to come.

Many happy returns Sue!

  1. my very favourite Audrey/Gail episode was the two of them out power walking and getting lost in the woods, only to find a pub with the scoundrel Lewis. That was a classic.

No Platt drama is complete until she's uttered, "Oh, Gail!" :-)
