Ken Barlow - will he live or die?

Well, that was a shock!  Poor Ken!  Just when we get the lovely Peter Barlow back on Coronation Street, Ken collapses.  But will he survive?

I guess Ken's stroke heralds the reason for the return of Ken's son Daniel Osbourne and his grandson Adam Barlow. But are they coming back to see Ken in hospital, or for his funeral?  Corrie wouldn't kill off King Ken, though, would they?

Or would they?

What do you think?

  1. I didn't see that coming! I think I'm so used to being told what is going to happen, to have something unexpected is quite a shock! I can't believe they would kill Ken off though.

    Two brilliant episodes tonight.

  2. Brilliant viewing! Reiterates my point that shock stories are so much better! I'm so glad I didn't know that was coming! Poor Ken!

  3. Back on 11th October, I had wondered in a comment to another post if the reason the Barlow boys were returning would be if they were going to kill Ken off. Now I don't feel that will happen - at least not yet. I hope not.

  4. Ken's death might even be a contributing factor to Toyah's return. Seems to me he was tutoring her when she was a teenager and they grew pretty close. Interesting twist...

  5. Sorry to go a bit off piste, but apparently Ken is going to announce the death of Hilda Ogden in a later episode, so no death just yet

  6. I can't imagine Coronation Street without Ken. It was a bit ridiculous that he booked an 8 week holiday for the next day. However, this is the street where people leave on a bus or in a taxi with all their lifetime possessions with barely a day's notice. It's very nice to have swoonsome Peter back.

  8. It would make sense to kill Ken off if Bill Roache wants to retire, but they can get better storylines about his being disabled, or how long his recovery takes. I can't see Tracey as much of a carer, but Adam owes his grandad for spending all those months in Canada.

  9. Hmm. Put it this way, if they actually went through with killing Ken off, that would make for a very interesting message to the viewers. A sort of 'no one is safe' sort of thing. And quite honestly I'm not even fully against the idea. In fact I quite like the idea of Peter taking on the role of Barlow family patriarch now with all his personal problems.

    I'm cautiously intrigued...

  10. Oh my! I had heard earlier today that Ken was going to have a stroke but I didn't think it would be so soon. Helen Worth let it slip on 'this morning'
Bill Roach always said he would stay to the bitter end, but that was when he was younger.
If the prospect of five episodes a week doesn't appeal to him then maybe he has decided to retire.
For the first time in ages I'm glued, and can't wait to see what happens. I'm beginning to enjoy Corrie again.

  11. Good job for the new producer....did not see that coming. If Ken died it would certainly put fear in the cast....if Roache ain't safe...ain't nobody safe. lol

  12. Wow what a shock. Too bad Helen had to blow it this morning but mistakes happen....

...HOWEVER I can't help but feel more excited as the episodes come and go - Corrie is starting to get better. Like other comments, I'm actually glued to it again and look forward to the next Episode.

It took a couple of producers to do this for me so well done Kate! Really liking this direction!

  13. T there's an article in The Mirror online with Bill speaking himself who confirms Ken doesn't die and makes a recovery.

  14. So the actors still can't keep their mouths shut and just let us find out the outcomes from actually watching the programme.

    1. Well it stops all the second guessing and hearsay that's rife at the moment, e.g. Will David survive? Is Amy Steve's daughter? Is Peter the father of Leanne's baby? Some of the suggestions are getting really far fetched

  15. If Amy was not Steve's daughter Tracy would not have cared about the genetic testing. If Peter was the father of Leanne's baby she would not have lied about it....Simon would have been delighted. Jack P Sheppard has no plans to leave the show. So.....
Tonight's episode was fantastic and I was shocked by the end with Ken. Good acting all around.

    1. And what point are you making exactly? My point was, no spoilers creates an unnecessary rumour mill, hence the examples I used. I wasn't expecting an explanation into each scenario I used. I didn't think anything into these rumours anyway, but despite some people saying to the contrary, these rumours still persist. Spoilers or rumour mill? I don't know

  16. Tim, don't blame the actors. The producers send them onto these programmes to promote the show and current storylines. It must get confusing for them trying to remember which details they can and can't reveal. Better all round, I think - and the reaction to last night's surprise on this blog seems to bear this out - if there are minimal spoilers.

  17. I never had any doubts that Ken will survive. If William Roache was leaving the show, they certainly wouldn't spring it on fans like that. They just wouldn't. Same with Jack P Shepherd. But I think it's a good storyline, seeing Ken struggle with his recovery adn bringing all the Barlow boys back together. Should be some interesting dynamics.

  18. I am sooooo glad I stayed away from the blog and other sources until seeing after Monday's ep. This was so much better spoiler free and reduced. Even though we knew about the cellar trick, that's going to be a character driven story at which JPS should excel. It will be about his reaction and how the family dynamic changes. We knew Peter would be back and have to face the music. Again, character driven, so the plotting isn't key. Ken having a stroke, however, was a stroke of genius -- total shock after we were happy that he was finally going to live out a dream. Wait a second, this is Ken Barlow, the poster child of dashed dreams. Should have known something would happen to destroy his plans. Wouldn't have guessed this. Come on, Wednesday.
