Jean Alexander, a true Corrie legend

Sad news for Coronation Street fans worldwide, actress Jean Alexander has passed away days after her 90th birthday.

Often described as the "greatest soap star of all time", Jean played Corrie favourite Hilda Ogden for 23 years, the long-suffering but ever-loving wife of Stan.

Jean left the cobbles in 1987 to take up residence in the dales as Auntie Wainwright in Last of the Summer Wine. She was nominated for a BAFTA for her role as Hilda in 1987 and her portrayal of the classic battleaxe has remained much loved and missed - a character that has stood the test of time amongst some of Weatherfield's most iconic residents. Indeed fans across the globe wished for Hilda's return, but the actress ruled this out in protest at some of the racier storylines the ITV soap offered as it entered the new millennium.

I'm sure fans and colleagues alike will agree that Hilda WAS truly one of Corrie's greatest, and we send our best wishes and condolences to Jean Alexander's family.

Tara chuck. We wish you luck as we wave you goodbye.

  3. Hilda was such an iconic character, played to perfection by Jean Alexander who bore no real resemblence to her and yet never seemed to be "acting". Here's a favourite scene. "Woman, Stanley, woman" https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OqtTB3oed7U

  5. Really, REALLY saddened to hear of the death of one of the icons of my childhood. She will probably always remain my absolute favourite Coronation Street character, the indomitable Mrs O, longtime cleaning lady of the Rover's Return and the grotty Baldwin's Casuals factory for something like 25 years, and quaffer of the occasionally sophisticated glass of 'char-bliss' at Dr Lowther's. She expertly rendered a working-class, post-war English woman of limited education, who was nevertheless never just played for laughs, who had endless innocent aspirations for a better life, and yet could take such delight in very little. Although largely the inspiration for 'Acorn Antiques' Mrs Overall, Hilda, who could be nosy, argumentative and judgemental, was also an immensely loveable, very hard worker. The absolute last of the Greats. RIP Jean; the world's your lobster, chuck. X

  7. She was before my time but if she hadn't done what she did so well, we wouldn't have a show to enjoy today. Thank you and RIP.
