Which Coronation Street legends would you like to return?

There's much hoo-hah this Easter weekend in the tabloids over incoming Coronation Street producer Kate Oates.  We've already blogged about her plans for cast and storylines here.

And now the tabloids are saying that Kate Oates plans to bring back some Coronation Street legends - including Bet and Curly.

Speaking to the Daily Star, she said: "I think Corrie has a strong cast but also a strong history and it's nice to mix and match. I'm looking forward to seeing what the writers are interested in doing and matching their ideas with mine."

Kevin Kennedy who played Curly Watts on Corrie, took to twitter to say this about his rumoured return:
Now then, as regular readers will know, I'm a huge fan of Emily's nephew Geoffrey, aka Spider Nugent. He'd definitely be on my list of top five characters I'd love to see return, along with Toyah Battersby too.

Who would you like to see again back on Coronation Street?

  1. Tired of hearing about Spider, sorry. Would love to see Bet back although not sure how she'd fit in.

    1. Emily is helping Spider in Peru. Very good timing to have him travel back with Aunty Em!

  2. Hilda Ogden visiting Kevin & Sally, Mavis visiting Rita would be on my wish list but both highly unlikely. I Would like to see Dennis Tanner back. Give him a decent storyline this time. Also Steves Brother Andy, Bev Unwin & Shelley, Kevins Sister (can't remember her name) , Martin Platt,

  3. I don't know if she's a legend, but I would like to see Claire Peacock come back. We'd be able to see Ashley's sons grow up on the street.
I know she went into exile for bashing up Tracey (deservedly so) but if Tracey can walk around free after causing the deaths of 3 people, let alone all the chaos she causes, then for sure the writers can find away to bring her back on a 'technicality'.

  4. When we say that we'd like certain characters back, we mean as played by the original actor. We want them because the actors made them memorable. I'd love Danny Baldwin to return but only with the same head. Maybe Bradley Walsh would have the time to do a small cameo stint but these short and sweet storylines don't always work.

  5. I would also like to see Hilda Ogden return as well as Norman'Curly' Watts and Toyah Battersby who as yet to meet her new 'sister' Eva.
I was disappointed in the missed opportunity in bringing Bet back for Betty's funeral.

Not exactly an icon - but Graeme please and Martin.

  9. I would like Graeme, sans Xin, as well. David deserves a friend of his own, although he is getting on with Todd. I'd also like to see Toyah, with a career and an interesting husband/fiance in tow. Marcus, Mavis, Lloyd, Janice, Bill, Auntie Pam, Claudia, and Rita's friend Delores (?) are always welcome for a short visit.

It would also be a hoot to see Liz and Erica at the 1 O'Clock Club. They're close enough in age to join or nearly so. Maybe if the group met at Billy's church, or the community center, our girls could be recruited. Imagine Liz explaining Blanche to Erica -- that would be worth the price of admission.

I am surprised no one mentioned Stella Price.

Haha Michelle Collins, I would definitely like to see Stella back. I was annoyed when they made Karl a murderer. I liked Stella and Karl together, good chemistry.
I would also love to see Shelly and Bev Unwin back for good.

  13. - Would love to see Roy bring Sylvia back with him.

    - Since the actor has pretty much said never again, recast Martin and get him involve din David and Sarah Lou's lives again.

    - Dare I say...Tommy Duckworth? Had lots of untapped potential, and would get a Duckworth back on the cobbles. It's been years since the Chris fountain scandal, others have been forgiven for much worse.

    - Andy MacDonald...but please no more of Jim!

    - Gloria and yes, even Stella. Gloria's acid tongue was brilliant, her vs Audrey and Rita was incredible stuff.

    - I agree with the actress...bring back Sally' sister.

    - Owen, even for the short run to show he still gives a toss about Anna and Izzy.

    - Ryan, but with a good story this time.

    - Ken's other son Daniel, or his grandson James.

  14. Danny Baldwin and Karen McDonald - but sadly both these great actors are on to other things that keep them very busy.

  15. I remember when Julie Goodyear was brought back once before only to have her stint cut short after the filming exhausted her.

It's a much more grueling and demanding schedule than any of the characters pre-about-2005 would be used to. Scenes aren't even filmed chronologically so it must be incredibly difficult for even the most talented of actors to stay true to character

I have wondered whether the main reason why Dennis was so under-utilized and finally let go was because the work was just too arduous for Philip Lowrie (and that's not meant as a criticism).

One thing worse than not bringing back a much-loved character is bringing them back only to disappoint us. Just saying.

  17. Janice Battersby - the one and only!

  18. I agree with Rapunzel--sometimes, it might just be better to leave the much-loved character as a great memory. Like Sara Jane Smith (best companion of all time!) in Doctor Who, did we really want to see her thirty years older and sadder, toting around a rusted retro look K-9?
You need to have a great story line planned and the character needs to have a strong connection to the street and even then it's an iffy proposition. In fact, I think it's probably the iconic characters who are hardest to re-introduce because people have such a clear picture of their glory days--they don't actually want that character to have changed. Think of Curly--an amazing character in his day, but the world has moved on. Without his sidekicks--Reg, Maureen--and his Bettabuys he would not be the same Curly.
I think one of the reasons a character like Jenny Bradley has worked is because she wasn't iconic or on the show long--there's a real sadness to see what 20 hard years have done to the troubled young woman. The mere fact that the Street is the only place where she has any connections or sense of belonging or family is a pretty poignant comment on a difficult life.

  19. Lewis and Mark/Marcy for a fight to the death with ken over Audrey (mark must be wearing a dress and stillettos because he's much younger :))

  20. I too would love to see Graham return. They gave him such a crappy exit with the Xin storyline. Who didn't despise her? It was awful. He was quite loveable and funny.

  21. Spider Nugent, Archie Shuttleworth, Curly Watts, Graham Proctor, I would also like to see Hilda Ogden and Mavis Wilton return ( unlikely , if only just for a few guest appearances) I
too would also like to have Dennis Tanner re-introduced, may returning with his sister Linda Cheveski. I use to like his references to Elsie Tanner.
