Coronation Street character to be killed off

It's been revealed today that Coronation Street will kill off Tony Stewart.

The Sun  today says that Tony will be killed off, but that we'll not see him back on the Street.  His death will be announced to son Jason, Eileen and Liz.

Tony left Coronation Street in November 2015 and the actor, Terence Maynard, then went on to play in pantomime. He was great - I saw him! You can read my review here.

Tony being killed off does make me wonder if it will be tied into the reason for Jason leaving the Street.  As we know, actor Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason, is leaving Coronation Street later this year.  Read more on that here.

  1. Very sad to hear this. I'd been hoping Tony would return. He was a great character - a bad lad who had sufficient vulnerability to be rather likeable. And very effectively played by Terence Maynard. We can't even look forward to him coming back for an onscreen death.

  2. What a shame that he isn't coming back to defend Jason from Phelan's plotting. He could have died on-screen with Jason then leaving, unable to stay on the Street after his dad's death. Perhaps Phelan arranges for Tony to meet a sticky end before he reaches the Street ...

  3. I'd like to echo Cobblestone's sentiments. I had the pleasure of interviewing Terence Maynard and his character, Tony, will be sadly missed.

  4. bummer - I was really, really hoping that Tony would come back just in time to put Pat back in the box - I guess that means that Jason will leave and probably leave the builders yard to the villain Phelan, which means that he does the dirty on Eileen & her son Jason, much like he did to Anna & Gary . Not quite the outcome I had hoped for. Oh well we can only dream.

  5. So... when Callum's body is inevitably discovered, the workers who did the garage conversion will no doubt be wanted for questioning by the police. With Tony conveniently dead off-screen, the focus will be on Jason - especially as witnesses saw him and Tony drive off with Callum's car on the night of his death. And given the animosity between Jason and Callum that lead to Jason being seriously injured, the police will conclude he certainly had a motive for wanting Callum dead.

In other words, the Platts may find themselves forced to either come clean about that fateful night, or live with the knowledge that an innocent man may be convicted of murder because of them.

With both Ryan Thomas and Paula Lane on their way out, it remains to be seen whether justice will prevail, or whether Jason Grimshaw will become Weatherfield's answer to Max Branning.

  6. I'm really sorry to hear that. I too was hoping he'd return permanently

Just in response to Win: it was Tony and Todd (not Jason) who took off in Callum's car before setting it alight.

  7. That makes no sense at all. Why would you kill off a character off screen?
Very poor plotting, in my opinion.

  8. Nooooo, why would they do that? I always hoped we would see him back on the street one day. Now we never will....I don't like this one bit!

Also, yes it was Tony and Todd that drove off in Callum's car and they didn't disclose this to Jason until much later.

  9. I agree, there are 2 possible reasons for killing off a character that isn't even on the street anymore.
    1) It's part of Jason's exit script, or
    2) It's part of Kylie's exit script.

    Or both!

  10. Ohhh sad to hear they are killing him off, he's a great character. Though I do like Wim Lammens' thinking on what might happen. Phelan in his crafty I'm such a nice bloke way could even help with making Jason look bad, throwing in the odd comment here and there and end up with the builders yard as a result and comfort his mother too. I know he wasn't around then but he's cunning.

  11. I'm just waiting for the ghost of callum to turn uр at someone's banquet (like Hamlet's father) :)

    1. It's Banquo's ghost that appears at Macbeth's banquet; Hamlet's father walks the battlements. But it would be very entertaining to glimpse Callum's shade sitting in the snug in the Rovers,

  12. This is just lazy writing. It is time to hire new people who can put a decent story line together.

  13. There will be a grand slap up between Tony and Tracy. She will hit him with a blunt object as revenge for having wronged her. The police will question her but release upon lack of evidence. And then we turn our attention to.....

  14. Why kill him off? Why not break out the old chestnut of having him break a leg or something so that Jason leaves to "look after him"? He could fall for someone and end up deciding to stay and build a life, selling the builder's yard to Phelan. Same result, but without wasting a great character. It would also give Jason a nice exit story, which I think his character deserves. He's been far from perfect, but overall he's a decent guy.

Still wish he and Eva had stayed together. I like that pairing so much better than her and Aiden.

  15. Although it has been done before when Len Fairclough was killed offscreen in an auto accident returning home to Rita from his mistress's home,I am disappointed that the writers are doing the same with Tony.Perhaps he's murdered by Phelan or one of his co-horts to get his hands on the builder's yard which Tony owns but won't sell?
Imagine the look on Eileen's face when she discovers that she was sleeping with the man who murdered her son's father and that Anna was right.
