No Coronation Street return for Becky, says Katherine Kelly

With Paula Lane leaving Coronation Street later this year as Kylie, I've been wondering whether big sister Becky might return for Kylie's leaving story.  But, it appears not, as Katherine Kelly has ruled out a return to the soap.

In an interview with the Daily Mail today Katherine talks about her time on Coronation Street. When asked if she'd ever return to her role of Becky, who headed to Barbados three years ago, Katherine is adamant that she couldn't go back.

"I wouldn't want to spoil the amazing time I had there. Never say never, of course. But that would be my big worry. I haven't watched it for ages! The this is, 7:30pm is my daughter's bedtime...I don't even know half of the characters.

  1. I never liked Becky, but Katherine did a great job in the role. She is a fantastic actress. I look forward to seeing her in the last series of Mr Selfridge, which will begin at the end of March in Canada. I was however, a bit disappointed she commented that she no longer watches Corrie and doesn't know half the characters. I realize she is not obligated to watch it, and she can't be expected to lie - in the event she is approached about her opinion on a current storyline.
(I'm trying to convince myself not to be disappointed!).

    1. In fairness, she did spend 6 months of her pregnancy pact year in Australia, and when you're filming on location (Mr Selfridge, Happy Valley &c) you end up working all kinds of long, antisocial hours that make it well nigh impossible to keep up with a to show.

  2. I thought Becky was great, and has always been one of my favorite characters. Steve and her together were comedy brilliance.
However, I can see where she's coming from, since she had such a wonderful exit story and got the happy ending that very few characters get, I can see why she wouldn't want to spoil that.
I'm catching up after being away for a week, now to find out that Kylie's exiting also, which is a shame. (I don't think she's going to get her happy ending though.)
Loved Becky, but leave her happy in Barbados.

  3. Perhaps she has a lot of class - my mother used to tell me all the time that if I couldn't say anything nice then best not to say anything at all. Obviously she didn't say anything which speaks volumes.

  4. I'll still hold out hope that one day she will pop in for a visit. Becky's an all time favorite for me (even though most of her leaving was awful). It was so odd having a funeral for Haley without the chav who moved heaven and earth for her present. A visit with Roy, a trial or funeral for Kylie, has she even met Lily, none of these would be more than a day or two on screen. Mr. Selfridge doesn't need her anymore, so here's hoping.

    1. She's already shooting a new supernatural series called HIM. I really do think she's currently one of the hardest working actors on television.

  5. Kylie is going to go down for Callum's murder and that is how she is going to be written off. Then maybe in a few years she either comes back (if Paula chooses) or they recast.

  6. I think this is a good decision on her part. There are some Eastenders actors that are a joke for their leaving and running back to the show.
She played Becky well, the writers were getting to the point of wrecking the character.....the self destruct card they are playing on Carla half the time was a mantle first worn by Becky.
Good for her I say. I love that she had her happy ending....to come back would take away from that.

  7. Previously liked characters returning never work out. Bet Lynch, Sunita, Dennis Tanner, Tracy Barlow, Todd. I suppose Liz is an exception. Each was perfect in his or her time but they feel out of place when forced back into new situations. Perhaps Katherine was hinting at that when she stated she did not know most of the new characters.

    1. Some have worked though - Peter Barlow, Leanne ... erm ... oh yeah, okay.
