David Neilson is just one of many Coronation Street cast members taking a break this year from the show. You can find out who else is having a break - read all about them here.
And so it goes that Roy Cropper will be written out of the show to cover David's absence. This week's Inside Soap magazine reveal that Roy will be called away to look after his mum, Sylvia. Now, there's a woman I miss on the show. We need a battleaxe on the cobbles, it's soap law.
Inside Soap says that Roy receives a call from his Aunty Jean to say his mum Sylvia has suffered a broken hip and needs Roy's help.

So he runs to help his mum who couldn't even return to visit Roy when Hayley died!
ReplyDeleteIt was unfortunate that the actress fell ill then decided not to return when the Hayley story began to unfold. It turned out odd on screen when all was ok one minute then she just disappeared over night.
ReplyDeleteI miss Sylvia a lot, she was a great character, one that slotted right in and felt as though she belonged on the street. Played so well by Stephanie Cole. She'd certainly have a few choice words for Nessa!
I wish he was bringing Sylvia back with him. I miss her!
ReplyDeleteFirst Hayley, then Diedre, Emily and now Roy. That leaves a population I care about to one, Rita, who gets very little air time anyway. The rest can go murder, burn, row, have affairs all they want. I have better things to do.
ReplyDeleteAll the good ones going .Hate the ones returning .Not worth watching any more .
DeleteIsn't that the same reason Maria left to go to her parents? Or have I misremembered?
ReplyDeleteThe "looking after ill/incapacitated people" thing is getting old. Maria, Steve, Roy, Fiz, Ken, Kevin, who else has vanished for months with that excuse? (feel free to use that idea for a blog post ;) )
ReplyDeleteOh, Sean had to go to London to look after Dylan, or bring Dylan back, because of something happening to Violet...
ReplyDeleteWhy can't they look at a character's history and find an interesting angle to use for a lengthy absence? The storyline could then come back with the character to the street. It would be more believable and interesting to watch.
ReplyDeleteYes, I said this a while back, whenever people leave but want to come back, it's always "off to help an ailing family member" that's used. Very lazy writing! Oh, apart from Carla, who just goes on an extended holiday.
ReplyDeleteHow about a long holiday to see some famous steam engines around the world? You're right, the"looking after the sick relative" excuse is way too old.
ReplyDeleteCan they even try to come up with an excuse for characters leaving the show? It's just so lazy it seems. I guess the mother who bogged off and didn't even show up to his wife's funeral needs to be looked after? Lame or what.
ReplyDeleteI think the writers just don't care enough about the character to produce a decent exit/absence. I think they would prefer that they just go away and never come back. Works for me sometimes, but certainly not with the latest crop of actors who are leaving. By the way someone mentioned Dylan, Sean's son - whatever happened to him? He isn't even mentioned.
ReplyDeleteI miss having a battleaxe on the show; this was a staple of the show for many years. Remember Blanche? She was a great character and always had a large dose of "what for" for everybody. Maybe Sally can be the next one; she seems to lecture everyone she meets. Lynne from Ottawa
ReplyDeleteAgree with the sentiment. He should have taken a break on a long train trip to sort out of life/feelings/grief etc, telling Cathy that he trusts her to look after his home and the business with Anna. When he cones back they can decide their future together. It would give Melanie Hill a chance as Cathy to come into her own a bit, mixing in with the other characters. Wasted opportunity. But I'll see what scenes they give them before Rpy goes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with lazy writing, I mean when Rita was written out for a long period, she was on a worldwide cruise and similarly I like Emily's departure!!
ReplyDeleteBoth Carla and Roy leaving, creates a massive gap in the show. I will miss them individually but also I will miss their sublime, selfless, unusual friendship. Corrie needs quality actors such as these two.
ReplyDeleteAnother storyline that's OLD in times of crisis on the cobbles... "FIRE". There's a fire at least every 4 months on the show. And.. when do they plan on finally writing off Steve? *rolls eyes*
