Corrie's Couples - Possible, Present and Petering Out - Part 3

The Weatherfield microscope is out again, this time to examine the relationships that are on their last legs, almost dead in the water, almost done for – very nearly kaput.

After last night’s casino moment with Robert, it is likely that Carla and Nick’s relationship may be on the wane. Immediately after Carla and Robert had slept together, she regretted what she had done.

When Michelle finally found her, Carla confessed to her about meeting up with Robert by chance and sleeping with him. Michelle was shocked, pointing out rather superfluously, as Carla was already aware of this fact, that Robert was an employee of her fiancĂ© Nick. Carla was also aware that she had the best fiancĂ© on the planet, a man who is reliable, kind, loves her very much and is solvent. Was she really so drunk that she had forgotten all this, or was it Robert’s daring and bravado in betting so much money, then winning, that was the real aphrodisiac?

Whatever our thoughts may be on this, it looks like the beginning of the end for Carla and Nick. Nick will be heartbroken.

As for Ken and Nessa, close study under the Weatherfield microscope reveals Nessa to be unsuitable for Ken, mainly because of her lack of sensitivity. Last night saw Nessa say that Emily was making a song and dance of her departure for Peru. Well Nessa, this is Emily Bishop we are talking about, let me remind you, a woman much liked and even, possibly, revered by viewers and cast alike. At the age of 86, this ‘fussy’ woman is travelling to Peru, full of hope and enthusiasm, on her own, to see her beloved nephew Geoffrey/ Spider, while importing a ton of pencils.  (Nice touch, Norris and the pencils).  This is no mean feat for a woman of her advanced years, who is grasping the opportunity of a lifetime. So, in the politest possible way, I propose that we all shout a collective ‘Shut your cakehole Nessa!’ Leaving Audrey to lead the communal bellow.

As for Maria and Luke, I don’t feel that this relationship will continue. On paper they seem much suited but they lack the chemistry/spark/ je ne sais quoi – whatever it is that a couple need to convince on screen. Luke and Eva seem to me to be suited and though it all worked so well with Jason, well hope for a revival seems long gone.

While discussing Eva, it seems as if the potential relationship between her and Aidan has vanished before it really got started as Eva discovers that there was a bet involved as to whether Aidan would sleep with Eva. Still, a beer shampoo can be beneficial in creating a shiny barnet. Shame he doesn’t have more hair.

Mary and Brendan will end relatively soon, not perhaps through a lack of feeling, but for the simple fact that Brendan is married. Mary’s feeling for Brendan are stronger than his for her, but the married status is what will end it. Mary being stood up a few evenings ago was hard to take, but there will be those who say that she knew what she was getting herself into, as he revealed to her that he had a wife. Rita’s wise words fell on deaf ears.

I am aware that several viewers like Michael and Eileen as a couple, but for me, it doesn’t work. With Gail hovering in the background, still hopeful of a reunion, I believe, it makes for uncomfortable watching when Gail sees Michael and Eileen together. Gail’s wistful looks and sighs at a love lost can be deeply irritating but on some level it is hard to believe that Eileen is not getting just a bit of a kick out of seeing her nemesis suffer. So much for the sisterhood.

Just a word about Gary and Alya, even if they have already petered out or rather finished dramatically with Alya’s revelation about Jason. They had just about sorted everything out – Gary was accepted into the family and he had been given a share of the gym. Surely it’s not the end for these two, is it? These two who are so well suited and have what is lacking between Maria and Luke – a genuine spark. 2016 will reveal all.

  1. Very good post. Shame about Carla and Nick's relationship because I really think these characters work well together. Mary and Brendan have been a failure from the start. Ken and Nessa were never going to last.

  2. Thank you very much Joseph. Yes, I agree with all you say.

  3. I liked the post and it's a shame about Nick and Carla, but I never thought Gary and Alya were suited and he was such a jerk to her and claimed that business share knowing full well it was wedding gift, I hope they never get together.

  4. Gary and Alya didn't work, but then I didn't go much for Gary and Izzy either. All three are dull characters and need sparkier partners. Nick and Carla were a promising team but couldn't have gone the distance with Alison King leaving. I sincerely hope that Carla's fling with Robert doesn't result in an unplanned pregnancy as part of Carla's exit story.

  5. Great post.

Shame about Carla and Nick - I like them together, too.
Sure Nick will be heartbroken when he inevitably finds out that Carla slept with Robert but he had a one night stand with his brother's wife - not that long ago - so maybe he will be a bit understanding about it all? Then again, maybe not.

I agree about Maria and Luke. They're boring and I can't imagine the writers making much of an effort to come up with good storylines for them.

Not really a fan of Gary or Alya but I do think they were believable together. Far more convincing than Tracy and Robert who have no chemistry.

There's no way Ken will be able to stick Nessa for much longer. I give him a week before he cracks!

  6. I am also disappointed about the breakdown of Carla and Nick. I know there are many who dislike Nick for a variety of reasons but he has been extremely good to Carla and for her own sake, I am sorry to see that this will come to an end.

I am with the others who don't see the chemistry between Gary and Alya. I'd all but forgotten that they were an item, that's how insignificant their relationship seemed.

Nessa is a nasty piece of work, primarily because she can't be bothered to learn about the environment around her before stomping on it verbally in her attempts to secure Ken. She needs to go, as she represents everything that this Street is not about - outsiders who don't care about the community.

  7. Anonymous[21;31]Somehow I doubt Nick or his mommy will be understanding to Carla and for what it's worth,I think it's karma for his betrayal against David.
Speaking of David,I'm beginning to doubt that his marriage to Kylie will last as they break up every Christmas and with the 'ghost' of Callum hovering in the background,I wonder if they will make it to 2017?
I did like Eva and Aidan and I'm disappointed that the writers recycled the somewhat sleazy 'sleep someone to win a bet'storyline that they used with Tracy and Bev against Roy.
I thought it odd that despite claiming she liked Eva,that Kate would want to make such a bet and wonder if it's because shewas 'jealous'and has incestual feelings towards her brother just as Gail seem to have with Nick?

  8. ummmm interesting post, thanks for that... Are Gail and Michael still married?? Does anyone know?

  9. Yes vintgal003 Gail and Michael are still married. I do not personally know of one person that likes Eileen and Michael. He was fun with Gail, now he is just too serious and humdrum. I hate that he is rubbing Gail's nose in it prancing around with her arch enemy.
I see no spark with Alya and Gary. I found it childish and annoying how their relationship was going. How soon he forgot Izzy and his little boy.
I am so disappointed with Mary's married idiot...I really thought the writers were going to give the character a soul mate. It seems they have made Mary the sad butt of a sick joke with this one.
I am really excited about Anna and Kevin. :-)

  10. The actress who plays Mary is not that old in real life, I don't have a clue why they put her with a man nearing his 60's. Kind of creepy if you ask me. I wish they would put Mary with a more age appropriate man and someone at least somewhat attractive.

  11. The actree who plays Mary looks lovely when she is dressed up properly. I agree that she should not be put with Norris. Her attraction to him was over long ago., Remember when she kept him prisoner in the cottage? That was really uncomfortable viewing. Mary show her best side when she is with the twins. I feel sorry for her, but she does have some odd ways.

  12. I guess there's not much more they can do with the Carla character so shove her into bed with someone who claims he never got Tracy off his mind all these years yet, at the drop of her panties, is in the sack with Carla. I guess this might be the lead in to Nick getting back with Leanne but it's just so predictable.

  13. Yeah, I agree that Mary looked great dolled up to the nines for her Xmas date with Brendan. But pretty disappointing--as the other writer commented--that she has been paired with Brendan at all--not only is he married, but he is a dull, unattractive, slightly thick windbag. At least Norris has that acerbic wit!

I think Mary would work great with some younger activist type--she has that OCD personality and their single-mindedness. Or start her own business--maybe catering or selling gourmet fast food out of a food truck. With her quirkiness, intelligence, and manic energy, she has so much potential for success, unlike some of the dullards on the street. If Sally runs for political office, maybe Mary can be her Karl Rove/eminence grise/Cardinal Richelieu.

  14. What a superb idea for Mary Anon at16.06. I can see her now working away through the night pickling
and preserving. Dev may be able to sell some initially - sale or return until she gets her premises or pop up shop going. At my local shops here in Sheffield, a pizza maker arrives about 4 PM every Wednesday to make amazing pizzas in his portable oven. He ALWAYS sells out.

  15. Have Luke find a love other than boring Maria. We've not seen her in a while and I certainly do not miss this character. She is still as vacuous and uninteresting as ever. I like the fact Luke and sister Steph have each other and show a strong sibling bond. But give Luke a new lady love. Steph and boyfriend Andy make a cute couple and I hope the two have a strong storyline.

I was never keen on Carla and Nick. Nick is just too much a mama's boy --worse because he's Gail's boy! Carla needs to be hooked up with someone whom she cannot devour as a biscuit with her afternoon tea.
