The "kid has event/parent can't make it" thing is getting old, Corrie.
ReplyDeleteIf Glen is the chap Anna met at the singles night, I couldn't help thinking how much like Owen Armstrong he looked.
ReplyDeleteAll these convenient breakages! What with Andy and his leg and Maria's mum with a broken something-or-other.
ReplyDeleteSo..Johnny can't come clean and tell Carla, who had no use for her mum whatsoever, that he might be her dad? She's not a child.
ReplyDeleteIt's the standard 'I need a break from my job' plot..relative who hasn't kept in touch in years, has an accident, needs taking care of and the character is written out for however long. Lazy writing.
Didn't David ask Eva out once before the first time he and Kylie broke up after he found out she slept with his brother?
ReplyDeleteDavid and Kylie breaking up every Christmas is another storyline that's getting old!Yet other characters are axed due to 'lack of storyline'.
Wait for Jack P Shepherd to say he wants a break to work on his drama school. Martin will fall ill and David, who has barely seen anything of him, will rush to his aid.
ReplyDeleteThe Carla story is all wrong. Carla wouldn't be devastated, but Kate would be to learn that her cousin is actually her half sister. Seems to me that Johnny and Carla should be in cahoots to keep things quiet but Kate finds out - in true soap fashion, she would be in the Rovers ladies and overhears Carla and Michelle talking. Carla's exit should be due to the bust up between her and her half siblings.
Carla was never Kate's cousin; she married Paul, who was Kate's cousin. It is confusing though - I keep having to remind myself that it's Michelle who is cousin to the Neo-Connors. I absolutely agree with you, though, that Carla, a woman experience has made think so cynically of Family, would be more stoical at the news.
DeleteI enjoyed the episode. I really like the idea of Kev and Anna.
ReplyDeleteI really like Robert for Tracy.... I just wish he was more in her corner. He keeps giving mixed messages when he seems to be siding with Leann over Tracy.
I do agree Kevin and Anna seem to have chemistry. I also like Robert with Tracy, but I don't agree about him not being in her corner. He's being a decent guy helping out a friend with Leanne (and Simon IS Tracy's family, after all! Robert's technically his former (step) uncle!) but Tracy's selfish paranoia, her constant Me-Me-Me! default-setting, interprets this behaviour as a threat. And come to think of it, is Tracy's Corner seriously a location any right-thinking person would want to find himself? I think Robert and Tracy work best where he acts as a counterbalance to her nonsense and serves to ground her excesses of spite (Rob, before him, discharged this rôle even more effectively).
DeleteI loved the simple scene in the garage. Nothing much going on but good dialogue and banter which took me back to the corrie of old.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see the name 'Simon Crowther' I'm already cringing at the thought of the banal 'comedy' in store for us. How is he even allowed to continue as a writer for our great show? A case in рoint is his mistreating and 'dumbing-down' of Aidan - last time he was searching for his 'lucky silk socks' now it was his highlighter рens - since when were these two 'crises' even mildly interesting? reindeer hats, quiz in рrison, wedding dresses, david suddenly eying uр the ladies, 'рing рong' = what the hell was going on? get rid of him soon рlease!!
ReplyDeleteI agree that some of SC's wilder flights of fancy (silk socks!) often seems heavy handed, but as far as last night's episodes are concerned, disagree with regard to the wonderful trivial banter in the garage and the prison. That was authentic old-school Corrie.
DeleteAlso, some of the elements will not have come from SC, but from the episode brief that comes from the storyliners, which the writer has to follow. It breaks down the episode to be written, stipulating what has to happen, scene by scene. It's simply not true that a writer decides what to put into each episode: the brief can be very prescriptive. My understanding is that that London soap on BBC is the least prescriptive, with episode briefs of less than a page, while other shows' briefs run to excess of two pages, giving the writer less freedom. The ping-pong match, therefore, was most certainly not something Simon Crowther decided to shoe-horn in, as it is a plot thread that will extend over the next week, with other writers having to take it up - he's just following his brief. I know we all complain about the writers from time to time, but it helps to have a clear understanding of how they do their job. Very often, it's not their fault!
