Grumpy WWI veteran who lived at No.1
A former employee of the Town Hall, his on-screen time on the street was a pensioner, moaning about the prices of the Corner Shop and later the Kabin and also the state of the world and the younger generation he fought for in the trenches.
He was originally a gentleman, but as he grew older he became a precursor of Victor Meldrew!
His favourite tipple was rum and he enjoyed reminiscing about the war with anyone who’d listen. His main friends were Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell, the Walkers and the Barlows.
His niece Valerie married Ken Barlow and after Val’s death, he became a father figure to Ken.
Ken, like Val, affectionately called him ‘Uncle Albert’ as did Ken’s third wife Deirdre.
He had a stint as a lollypop man and as caretaker in the Community Centre.
He enjoyed passing the time of day at the allotment.
He was also an unlikely Romeo. A widower, he became engaged twice: to Alice Pickens and Minnie Caldwell.
He passed away in 1984 while visiting daughter Beattie, who he didn’t have a very close relationship with. This was written due to Jack Howarth's death.

At his best (last 60s, early 70s) one of the funniest characters ever to appear in the programme. An unappreciated classic character.
ReplyDeleteLoved him.

ReplyDeleteMy all-time favourite!
ReplyDeleteHe'll have a drop of rum, if you're buying.
He always reminded me so much of my grandad! He was so representational of a type of older gentlemen that could be found on most streets in the 60s & 70s.
