Is Gary entitled to his share of the gym - Yay or Nay?

There are some interesting and conflicting opinions being shared as to whether you think Gary should be entitled to his share of the gym.

On the one hand, he signed a contract. It's a legally binding document which means Gary is a partner at the gym, has shares on it and is entitled to his bit of the action. He needs the job to look after his family of baby Jake.

On the other hand, Gary's a nice bloke, and he should step away from the conflict and leave the Nazirs alone.

So what do you think... should Gary be entitled to his share of the gym - Yay or Nay?

  1. I'm surprised the Nazirs didn't have a clause in the contract to say he gets the share once the marriage has taken place, or that it's null & void in the event of a break-up.

In the absence of this, I guess he's a legal shareholder.

My question is, if they were happy for him to work there and have a share, and they felt there was room for him in the business, why isn't that still the case? If it was all entirely predicated on his marriage to their granddaughter, then maybe they shouldn't have offered it to him in the first place.

  2. To me, even though he may have a legal claim, he most certainly lacks a moral one.

And to be honest it was his attitude of entitlement when he returned that annoyed me most. Never mind the fact that he disappeared without trace for weeks on end, having only just been given part ownership of the gym. That alone ought to invalidate his claim.

  3. Of course he is entitled to his share of the gym. He's done nothing wrong at all and has signed a contract. Forget moral when legal is involved because everyone has a different idea of what moral is anyway.

  4. He's entitled to his share of the profits. It was a wedding gift but if it wasn't stated as such in the contract, legally he's entitled. Morally? yes, it's a grey area. Does Alya get to keep the ring? She could make a case that it was a gift, though if it were me, I'd give it back.

  5. There is no grey in the moral area, in my opinion.
It's totally wrong for him to force his unwanted self into the business. He didn't do a thing to earn it -- he should show some respect and allow the Nazirs to draw up the necessary paperwork (to relinquish his share). But of course, he won't do that. I know this quarrel is supposed to make for good drama viewing, but I would have preferred to see him handle it with some dignity for all.
But a scorned Windass, makes life insufferable for everyone around them. Alya is well rid. And this should confirm it.

  6. Gary is not a nice bloke or a 'good lad' as Anna is always saying. Look what that family did to Joe McIntyre? Remember when he and Kylie got together in Mary's van? All his awful deeds are swept under the rug. This new (old) Gary must be part of the lead in to the return of Phelan I think.

  7. No. It was a wedding gift. It is beyond insane he thinks he can keep his share.

  8. Some good points listed above here. Yes Gary's entitled to his share of the gym if the Nazir's were remiss in putting a clause in the contract, as it's a legal binding document.
Anonymous makes an excellent point about Gary's past misdeeds. All of a sudden Gary's a 'nice bloke', but considering that he hung out with his Uncle Len when he first came here, and look what he did to Roy's just last year, he's got a past that says otherwise.
He's entitled to his share in the gym, but he's not the saint everyone's painting him to be.

  9. There are a couple of comments above about whether Gary is or isn't a 'nice bloke'. I'd come to think he really had developed into a decent guy, but he's returned with a horrible attitude and to be honest I was shocked by his comment to Jason - "And if I want Eva, I'll have her". That's not something a nice bloke would ever say. That's something I'd expect from Pat Phelan.

  10. at first I was all for letting Gary keep his share of the gym, but since he has come back from Germany he is a vile character - I would have preferred if his mum and Faye had joined him in Germany never to be seen again, they are both nasty people and considering when they first arrived on the street they don't deserve anything. I'm hoping that since it was announced that Pat Phelan will be returning to the show he may have the opportunity to set the past right and not let Anna or Gary rewrite history and laud it over everybody.

  11. Stupid is as stupid does. If experienced businessman Sharif didn't think to put an out clause in the partnership contract, he should have at least waited until the wedding took place. This is much bigger than china or a blender. Gary gave up a job with the expectation of earning at the gym. It's his legally and the only moral obligation he has is to Jake.

Personally, I think he should sell his share, take the money and start fresh. Don't care if he sells it back to Sharif or to a stranger. But Gary is an idiot and Corrie rarely mirrors reality, so I think we are in for tedium.

  12. Personally, I don't think Gary's a nice bloke. I don't understand why we're supposed to empathize with him now after all the crap he has done to people on the street.Of course he should sign back his share of the gym. I am not buying the "I have to think of Jake" BS. We haven't even seen Jake for ages, there's been no mention of him, really. Now all of a sudden Gary is being written as the dutiful father. I am not buying it for one minute. This feels a lot more like Gary being the irrational man child that he is and "getting back" at Alya.

  13. There has long been a huge gap between "legality" and "morality". Gary should give the share back to the Nazirs, as it is the moral thing to do. Gary a dutiful dad? Hello, I don't think so. Tyrone is a dutiful dad. Gary spends no time with his son. And he certainly has no right to be judgemental about Alya, given his own past.

  14. I agree with abbyk that Gary should sell his share. It would be vexatious of him not to sell back to Sharif who, presumably, would be relieved to pay Gary off. However, this is Corrie and, sure as eggs is eggs, Gary will be the saviour of the gym and a credit to the memory of Kal.

  15. The way I see it is why would you want to work with the family of the woman who supposedly broke your heart? Awkward, much? As he had given up his jobs before, thinking that he would be working at the gym, a small payoff would be sensible and realistic, but when does Corrie ever do that?

  16. Legally, yes. Morally, no, for all the reasons others have pointed out.

Also call out Gary for being immature and irresponsible for thinking he can run out on his son with no notice to Izzy. I think he's a misogynist with his whole virgin/whore approach to Alya. He's a hypocrite, given he cheated on Izzy. And he's plain wrong, since Alya had already broken up with him when she hooked up with Jason.

  17. He didn't cheat on Izzy. THey were apart when he got together with Alya. Izzy got the wrong end of the stick, thinking she and Gary were going to get back together but Gary never made any romantic approaches. He was being friendly and getting along better for Jake's sake.

  18. I think what Shells might mean is that Gary cheated on Izzy by making a pass at Tina when she was acting as their surrogate.

  19. I seem to remember a website, run by a lawyer, who comments on the accuracy and legality of various storylines on British soaps. The last time she weighed in on Corrie was when Tyrone was being abused by Kirsty. We need her input now, as to the law in the U.K. regarding the distinctions surrounding gifts, particularly conditional ones. 20. Alot of people have children to raise but that does not entitle them to someone else's property or business! Gary has no rights to the gym because he did not earn it nor did he marry into the family as promised. Would be interested to know Sharif's legal rights--the first thing I'd be doing was talking to a lawyer not sitting at a table listening to Dev pontificate! And since WHEN was Dev such a big fan of Gary?! DEV: if it were your shop Gary broke into would you be so fawning?

Nice contrast though between the gracious class act that are the Nazirs and the vile, misogynist and stupid Windass. Alya should be thanking her stars for her lucky escape, not chasing after him like a beaten puppy asking for another kick.

  21. No. He has returned with an attitude of entitlement based on taking something that was offered in very different circumstances. The remark, mentioned by another blogger, "if I want Eva, I will have her" as if she is a dispensable commodity, was a mysoginistic remark and I felt disgusted that such a line was included in the script. It does not give the right message, however as in soap so in life, there are words uttered that are unacceptable to women. His shadow side has emerged again.
