There's something about Coronation Street
It's the little things that annoy me about Coronation Street. Overall, I generally enjoy the show. There are occasional storylines that I don't like but that's ok, not everyone likes every single story. My tastes are not someone else's. I try not to nitpick, either, but sometimes, it's inevitable.
Monday's Corrie had me grumbling. Kevin had dozens of cars in for servicing, some that had to be parked around the block elsewhere. That was more stupid than a stupid thing. People need to make appointments for servicing in every garage. Every one of them. No company would expect a small garage like that to be able to service dozens of cars in one day. Kevin should not have even allowed them to bring them all. He should have scheduled 4 or 5 or 6, whatever he thought they could realistically do. The next batch can be brought in the next day and the next. It just set my teeth on edge.
Beth had the cake run and mentioned that one of them was Sally's. Sally isn't back from her honeymoon yet, right? Did I miss something? Is she back and just lost under the dogpile of Connors in that tiny office? And that's another thing. Unseen parts of the regular houses apparently have elastic walls but we can clearly see that tiny office can't hold three managers, an assistant trainee and a PA. It's ludicrous.
Why is Mary still living under Dev's roof? Number 7 has Curly's old attic observatory so I thought probably Asha and Aadi were able to have their own bedrooms. No room for Mary unless those children are still sharing and she's in the attic. Those kids are getting too old to share a bedroom (aren't they growing up!) Why on earth Dev didn't offer Mary the shop flat months ago is beyond me. I think there's another flat over the community centre empty as well, the one Janice Battersby used to have.
I believe it's half term holidays this week but how can everyone get away with taking their kids out of school? Simon's been gone for weeks, Sarah's taken Bethany off to Italy for a few weeks which is more than the current school holiday and they left before it started. (How long does the half term holiday last? one week or two?) Maria's taken Liam off as well. I suppose she could plead family emergency in that case, and taken school work with her though he's only in his second year of school, I think. It's just annoying because earlier in the year, David was having fits about taking Max out of school due to the new laws.
Johnny's acting like he's an owner of Underworld. He put the money in Aidan's account to dodge the tax man. Aidan invested the money in his account in the business and signed the papers. As far as the law goes, Aidan is the legal partner, Johnny is just hired help. Morally? Well, if Johnny has to prove the money originally came from him then he's going to have to face the tax department's questions.
And, in the category of Inquiring Minds Want To Know:
Why is Anna getting tipsy all the time lately? Are we on the verge of another alcohol abuse story? Why do we keep getting Callum's mother stalking the Platts but not Gemma? Do Ozzy the Dog and Darryl the Rat get on?
Where are all these people sleeping? In addition to my Mary speculation, there must be a lot of other people sleeping in attics. Luke is lodging with the Dobbs/Brown family, he must have that loft conversion for his bunk and Craig must have a room in the attic of Number 5 (I seem to recall the Battersbys were going to make it into a living space years ago though it wasn't done formally. That's where Chesney and Sophie found Ivy Brennan's old diary, you may recall.) Why doesn't Luke just tell Steph about Jamie's racy photos of her? She'd tear Jamie to bits!
Ah well. I'll get me coat. This too shall pass.

Thank You! All my nitpickings wrapped up in one little blog post.
ReplyDeleteI was particularly annoyed at the explanation given for Maria's departure. Tptb have known for a while that Samia was going off so they could have written a believable exit story. It's as though authenticity doesn't really matter, particularly with the minor characters. I'm guessing Simon won't come back; Leanne will make a brief comment about him staying with Peter and he'll be forgotten. The latest madness is Erica working in the shop. I can't believe, under any circumstances, that someone like Erica would work in a back street shop.
ReplyDeleteI wish the writers and producers would look at their storylines and ask themselves one question. "Is any of this likely?"
ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON!!!
ReplyDeleteSpot on Tvor. Those cars really annoyed me too and I didn't understand why Luke was still at Tyrone & Fiz's. Good call on the cake run and couldn't agree more that Steph would sort out Jamie good and proper. Though why didn't Luke simply smash his phone when he had the chance?
ReplyDeleteBut my current biggest bugbear is Alya. Is she pregnant or not? She took the test but I don't think it was ever made clear what the result was.
Doesn't' someone live in the shop flat?
ReplyDeleteWhat was that storyline where Chesney heard bumping around up above?
My memory must be going, lol.
C in Canada,I think the storyline you're referring to is when Leeanne fell after a fight with Simon in the shop flat. That's when Chesney heard bumping noises.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of flats, when are Sarah and Bethany going to move out on their own?If she is pregnant with Callum's child, surely she can't expect to stay in David's house?
I thought Sarah and Bethany were staying with Nick...and what's with all these people just "staying" with other people...dont they have more than a suitcase of clothes to show for their lives??
ReplyDeleteAnd where on earth does everone sleep at Eileen's?? these houses dont' have basements , they can't all be in the lofts?? surely?
And how will they resolve the body in the garage issue?? are they really just going to leave him there?
why didn't they just call the police on the night?? Sarah would have said he was attacking her...but then I guess i forget it's just a show..
Leanne and Eva live in the flat above the kebab shoр - the shoр flat is free, as is the community centre flat as is number 12 (after Julie left) and who isat 17a? that рlace has always been a mystery to me lol
ReplyDeleteOkay, to take up several of these points:
ReplyDeleteDev's flat over the corner shop has been empty since Tim moved into Sally's. That's how Faye knew it was empty to supposedly give birth there, and how she still had a key. Alya is not pregnant; the test was negative. Sarah & Bethany are not living at David's house, they've been at Nick's flat at Victoria Court for months now, except when they had to move out during the fire, when they went to Audrey's. And smashing Jamie's phone is not likely to work since most people back up things like photos (especially important ones) on another computer or on the Cloud, in case the phone is lost, so breaking the phone would in all likelihood have achieved nothing except further antagonising Jamie.
Fab post, all my nit-picks under one roof. And the daft car plot is just ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteTVOR your comments were spot on.
ReplyDeleteI have a few comments of my own if you posters will all bear with me. I am watching in Canada and last night's eppie drove me crazy. We had Kylie taking the day off work to supposedly help the guys with the conversion. They arrived in the morning. We have a scene with Maria and Luke eating in the café and Jamie rudely butts in. Then we have scene with Todd, Tony drinking beer in the pub (is it still morning?) We also had Mary working at Roy's then we see her working at the Kabin?
I thought Mary was Dev's nanny?
I love the show and have been a loyal viewer for many years but sometimes I really question the storylines.
I had no idea that Luke was still living at Tyronne's where on earth does he sleep?
Clearly the car story demonstrates the level of writing we are being exposed to. Apparently the only way these writers could think of to explain Kevin and Sophie's sudden interest in expanding the business is by having "so many cars they don't know what to do with them". I'm sure 10-year old children are contributors to these story lines.
ReplyDeleteThe car thing is even more ludicrous since Kevin apparently owns the other garage that he bought from his old mate, a point that has not really been obvious since it was offered. I recall Kevin did go to the bank but that was the end of it. I don't think we ever heard whether he was able to get the loan to buy it but apparently he did.
ReplyDeleteWhere is 17a? Coronation Street itself only goes up to 13, right? Unless that's the two flats over Barlows Buys? Or is it 17a Victoria street. Flat over the kebab shop is Leanne's, flat over the cafe, obviously Roy's, and there's a flat over the community centre, that must be it. That one's empty. So there's one for Sarah and Bethany and we can put Mary in the shop flat. Eileen's house has always had more people in it than can fit. But there is a front room just inside the door and that's where Sean is.
All of the older houses only have two bedrooms upstairs and a tiny bathroom. Number 7 and now Number 9 have loft conversions. Apparently 5 must have one as well, it's the only explanation since Craig doesn't seem to be sleeping on the sofa. Baby Jack must be sharing with Sophie or his father down in 13, because I don't think Sophie moved back in with her mother.
Mind you, the one that took the cake was the pub. Some years ago it apparently must have had four bedrooms upstairs, plus a bathroom. Then during Becky's time, there was even a small living room and kitchen in addition to 3 or 4 bedrooms. (Liz, Steve and Becky, Amy who lived there while Tracy was inside). I never figured out how the original pub, that had a small snug and a small function room, The Select, could have been renovated after the 1986 fire to be just that one smallish room that it is now. The original kitchen must have been miniscule because that's the only place part of the Select could have extended. I reckon it always must have had three bedrooms because the Walkers brought up a boy and a girl there.
I love the Faktry where anyone and everyone can get a job no matter what because there's always a big order coming in and it's all hands on deck.
ReplyDeleteLove our Corrie tho....
great blog and all the above posts. I just hope the TPTB read this - don't they have a special media dept? surely they should at least keep up with this Blog page and never mind about the newspapers.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of huhs? Where did Tim & Sally go on their honeymoon - it was mentioned they were leaving, to where? nobody knows and as far as buying her a sweetie bun she isn't back
When it comes to empty flats, it was never explained what happened to Brian & Julie's flat that they purchased when Brian rec'd a pay rise. Surely they should have moved Mary in there when she lost her camper van. And why isn't Michael living in the flat above the cab office since Lloyd & Andrea have left. And Luke can't be still living at Fiz & Tyrone because I don't think the conversion was ever really completed after Tyrone fell through the roof. Why doesn't he move into Maria's flat now that she has gone to take care of her mother. I, too, was surprised about her exit storyline, seems to me that none of the writers even bothered putting too much effort into it - poof she is gone, maybe she won't even be back.
To use that old cliché - enquiring minds want to know
All of the above, plus who is looking after young Jack with Kevin working all hours?
ReplyDeleteyoung Jack must be at the same "child minder" that looks after all the infants on that street..especially the invisable Lilly
ReplyDeleteThe only way I can watch and not throw up my hands and give up in disgust is to completely suspend disbelief and not think about all the loopholes and careless implausibilities. There's no threat from the Corrie writing team of Agatha Christie or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle losing their places as masters of plot construction! Maybe that's the problem: it's a team effort, and as we know, "too many cooks spoil the plots"! There's too big a cast, too many weekly episodes and over all, "too much of a muchness" and the quality suffers. Maybe Ms. Oates can convince the bosses that scaling back would be the best route, but with all that airtime giving ITV so much ad revenue I'm not holding my breath.
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing - every new character gets a job in the street, usually with no qualifications, training, skills or experience, and often there wasn't even a vacancy before. The factory now has more bosses than machinists! It's as if they all have to work within walking distance of home - just as well, since hardly anyone has a car, but can afford taxis. Audrey does have a car, as her house is in a posh area away from the salon, so why did Ken offer her lift home?
ReplyDeleteWhich reminds me, who is looking after Ozzy now Maria is away? Is it a case for the RSPCA?
ReplyDeleteKirk mentioned he was going to go over and get Ozzy so add a dog to the mix in Number 5. That's why I asked if Ozzy gets along with Darrel the rat!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Lloyd's flat, yes. Brian and Julie's will still be owned by them so unless they arrange to rent it, it'll stay empty.
Alya's desk is on the Faktry floor i think
ReplyDeleteI hope I'm not too late to ad my two cents about Tyrone. He's grumbling that he's broke but he never canceled the trip to Lapland and is still buying Hope gifts? What about Ruby?I understand that Hope is very ill but his daughter Ruby seems to be forgotten altogether.
ReplyDeleteMissed that about Ozzy, Tvor! I shall rest easy, knowing he is being cared for, though it's going to be extra crowded over there.
