Why gob-almighty Gemma must stay on the Street

When Callum's deeds catch up with him, as well they must as this is soap and that's what happens to baddies, I do hope Gemma will stay on Coronation Street.

She's Callum's sidekick right now, but there's got to be hope that the girl can be redeemed when Callum gets what's coming to him. With Callum out of her life, Gemma and Macca can then get together, take over the nail concession at Audrey's salon and live happily ever after on the cobbles.

Dolly-Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma Winter, is on twitter here.

And in real life she looks nothing like Gemma the chav.

Dolly-Rose (what a great name!) has acted on stage in a variety plays. From Waiting for Godot to Around the World in 80 days, she's one versatile lady. You can check out her Spotlight CV here.

Interestingly, her CV states that she's a professional chef!

  1. Sorry Nora, I couldn't disagree more. I'm really sick of watching characters who are nasty and vile (as great as the actress is at portraying her- and she really is!) If the writers chose to keep her they would have to go down the Maddie/Becky route of redeeming her and she really hasn't got an ounce of niceness about her. I wish the powers that be would introduce characters that are funny, caring and dare I say normal. I know there ae Gemas out there but if I wanted to watch them I'd pull out my Shameless DVD. - Micky

  2. I really hope she doesn't. Can't stand the character and not even can't stand in a good way.

  3. I don't like her character either; and besides, where "on the Street" would she live, isn't all the available space filled up at the moment.

  4. Gemma only works as a side kick character and, though she might hate Callum for using her, she lives under his protection. Once he's gone, she'll look for another gang leader to run around for.

  5. I bet Campbell enjoys her role as Gemma. She's so over the top. With ninety percent of actors unemployed at any given time, a job that allows one to be outrageously nuts must be a double treat for her. Most times I forget that the characters are just actors (minus the well to do stars) trying to financially get by, people just like us, but committed to a very precarious occupation. I for one enjoy character actors like Norris, Beth and Gemma. They're the ones that since the beginning of the show that gave its sparkle without the Hollywood dressings.

  6. I love Gemma! I've been saying for ages that she's a great Corrie secondary character. I agree with Catman, it looks like she is having a great time in the role. She's very much like Becky used to be and I can see Kylie would have been like her in the bad old days. She's a tough cookie but I also think that if Callum comes to a sticky end, it could easily be at Gemma's hands, in self defence maybe. Macca is a great cameo character too though I don't think would be that great as a semi-regular. Gemma can stay, get a market stall or something. Maybe she can do community service in the CS centre! Yasmeen will sort her out sharpish!

    1. Thanks for your text agreement. Between the two of us, we made a strong case. I particularly liked you bringing up the memory of Becky. But, I hate it when someone uses Corrie as a stepping stone. Nonetheless, she was classic Corrie.

  7. I am not a fan actually. I would not want to see her stay on the street after Callum exits (soon please!!!!). Plus, let's face it, she's a criminal. She should be in jail. She hasn't cared about Max and the drugs or the gun at all. So, as a woman and human being, she has failed. I say jail time and Bye Bye.

  8. I like your Community Centre idea Tvor!
She is really pretty in real life, they done a good job 'chavving' her up!

It seemed to me in the other night's episode that Gemma felt a little bad in the car with Bethany. Whether she gets to a point and realises Callum has gone too far and it brings a change in her and she is a part of hos downfall, who knows?

With the huge rumours he is going to be killed off in the Live Episode, I have wondered if she he has gone too far and he turns on her when she questions him, thus causing her to kill him in self defense when he goes for her.

  9. Absolutely - she makes me laugh out loud a lot. When Callum is around, you just hope Gemma is traipsing along behind him. I've been thinking for a while that she needs to stay. I'm sure she'd fit in somewhere....she seems to have no redeemable features, and would probably never get a job in the industrial hotspot that is the Street, but it would be fun seeing her try...the kebab shop, maybe? Who do we contact to ask for her to stay?!

  10. I don't like her but there have been worse characters on the show and I think they probably could come up with a story for her that would allow her to stay on the Street.

  11. Unless redeemed, no. It's all becoming too EastEnders and I'm sick of it.

  12. We're split on this one at Conversation Street. Michael thinks she's brilliant and would love her to stay once the Callum story is over, whereas Gemma isn't a fan, and doesn't enjoy sharing her name with such a chavvy character! :)

  13. I'm firmly team Gemma! She's shrewd, a risk-taker, self assured, entertaining and performed brilliantly by Dolly. If she's to remain 'bad', I would love to see her interacting with Todd and Tracy, perhaps with a shady role in Barlow's Buys. If she's to be made 'good' she'd fit in well at Webster's garage, maybe taking up Maddie's role and training as a mechanic.

  14. As her "real self" she looks very familiar. I'm sure I've seen some of her other work.

  15. Isn't Dolly-Rose a cutie when out of character! Speaks well to her ability to appear to be someone she obviously isn't. Gemma has been hard to take at times, but being overshadowed by Panto Callum hasn't helped. I also saw the flicker of guilt in her yesterday with Bethany in the car.

Would love her to stay, and a bit of her hair could even be let down. Her forehead must hurt by now! ;)

  16. What is the matter with you people who actually like the character?

What is there to like? She's a nasty piece of work, nothing remotely likeable about her.

Characters like that belong on Shameless, not Corrie!

  17. With Callem gone Gemma finally admits she's gay and moves in with Sophie.

    1. Well that'd be the kiss of death for the character!
