Shayne Ward confirmed for Coronation Street

Coronation Street have confirmed that X Factor winner Shayne Ward is joining the cast as a new member of the Connor clan.

Shayne will play Aidan Connor, a distant cousin of Michelle.Aidan grew up on the same estate as Michelle and Carla when they were younger. He arrives in Weatherfield in August after hearing that Carla is having some problems at Underworld.

Ward has signed a one-year contract with Coronation Street and show producers have big plans for his character, as they will also be introducing Aidan's father and sister in the coming months.

Shane said: "On hearing the news I had been offered the part on the show, I was in total disbelief. It still hasn't sunk in. Shayne Ward the lad from Manchester, given such a role on such an iconic show - it is an absolute dream come true. I'm excited to walk down those famous cobbles.

"My family and friends know just how much this means to me and I cannot wait to do them all proud. 2015 has been a great year for me so far and I look forward to joining the Coronation Street family."

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn added: "When Shayne came in and auditioned, we knew he was up against some very stiff competition. But he blew us away from the very get-go, delivering a charm and a swagger that is perfect for the character. I can't wait to see him in action!"

  1. Another ex pop star? Corrie could almost form their own pop band now. What about all those trained actors who spend years at drama school.

Also, the cast is already bursting, do they really need more characters? Especially one related to Michelle Connor.

    1. Agree totally - he used to work in a shoe shop before he won XFactor. Not an ounce of training in sight.

  2. Now that's what you call a hunk! (Callum, please note).

  3. Any reason Michelle's son is no longer mentioned? I guess this new relative that nobody's ever heard of is going to give Michelle and Steve no end of grief.

  4. I think Stuart Blackburn has the final say in all casting decisions so its not casting departments fault. But what an insult to give someone a 1 year contract when all trained actors are usually given 3 month trials first.

  5. I'll bet he's there to run the 'factry' while Carla goes on break.

  6. I despair. Do TPTB merely cast thirty something unshaven hunks nowadays? Are these really the characters we will be celebrating in ten years time?- Micky

  7. Shayne has had plenty of training, London's West End no less. He starred in Rock of Ages and was brilliant. And no, it wasn't just singing, he had to act as well.

Give the guy a chance you lot!

  8. Didn't the Connors already have a cousin named Sean?I think he worked in the market stalls with Liam and had a crush on Maria too.
It would make more sense to bring him back then create another cousin to justify storylines for Michelle.

  9. Is this because Carla is leaving, all the other Connor's are dead, her own son (number 2) and still the fake one, was a disaster in the acting department and was banished to where all failed characters go, Spain. But they still need to boost the Connor ratio on the street to give Michelle a back story and 'ties? And make her interesting? Sadly they could bring in the Pope as her uncle and the Queen as her aunty Liz to work some shifts and I'd still struggle to find Michelle interesting!
