Tracy Barlow's ex-husband to return to Corrie, says The Sun

The Sun reports today that Tracy Barlow's ex-husband Robert Preston will return to Coronation Street this summer.

I wonder why he comes back? Any guesses?

Robert Preston hasn't been seen on Corrie since New Year's Day 2003. The Sun says that he will sleep with Tracy but it soon becomes clear he's not a single man - his wife arrives in the form of  Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding who has been cast in the role.

An actor has yet to be cast in the role of Robert. Actor Julian Kay played the original Robert.

Find out more about Robert Preston here.

Had forgotton that R'Tracy was once married but wasnt that in her previous incarnation as Dawn Acton? Why would he return after all these years? Amy is not even his child. Seems another character is being added to the already bulging cast.

  2. I wonder if he's coming back to do with Deidre's funeral. That would make sense to me. Deirdre was his mother-in-law. I don't imagine he or the one playing his wife are long term.

  3. Ah! This woman is the one who was reportedly coming in to give Tracey Luv a hard time, and now we know why! Looking forward to it!

  4. Lead in to the murder of Tony I'm thinking.

  5. Yes, it could be that he comes back for Deirdre's funeral or to find out why he hasn't heard from her for a while. Perhaps they kept in touch without anyone else knowing. Intrigued to know how the woman gives Tracy a hard time. Wouldn't it be fun if Deirdre confided a lot of stuff about her daughter to Robert and it all comes spilling out?

  6. They were very young when they were married. I can't think of a viable reason to being him back other than Deirdre's funeral like somebody else mentioned.

  7. I wish they'd stop adding in new characters! I know a few have left recently/are leaving this year but that's a good thing because the cast is so bloated! Particularity as new characters don't seem to stay long because they're so poorly thought out. I really am not interested in watching any more stories around Tracy's bedroom shenanigans.

  8. I cant even understand why he would come back for Dierdre's funeral? Were they close? I dont remember Dierdre ever mentioning him and he and Tracy were divorced years ago so it does not make any sense to me that he should come back, with stroppy wife in tow! Just a reason for even more unpleasantness.

Frosty is wondering if Peter will return for Diedre's funeral or will be conspicuous by his absence. Then we will have this random bloke that was married to Tracy about 20 years ago and hasnt been mentioned since turn up with his 2nd wife! Daft.

  10. Why would an ex-son-in-law from ages ago come back for a funeral when Tina's own mother didn't even come to her daughters??

  11. First,it's spent characters like Jenny,Sarah and Bethany who have returned to justify storylines for Kevin and the Platts [who have been featured to the point of overkill already] and now Robert is coming back to justify a storyline for another spent character Tracy?!
With regards to Deirdre's funeral,I hope it's soon as I think it doesn't make sense that's there no mention of her right now so hopefully soon Ken will mention Deirdre's return from Bev's?

  12. Please! enough of the Platts. Other much more interesting people live on the street. Also when do they plan to say goodbye to Diedre's. How many people fit in the Platt house anyway? Do they stuff the extras in the basement? Enough is enough of the Platts'.
Like to see more goins. On at the Rovers Return, Liz and creep Tony. Even Tracy is more interesting than the Platt family. Bomb the house. More exciting than the "bus crash".
Lastly, please don't kill Tony off. He may be bad but he is easy on the eyes.

  13. I've been watching since 1999 and have absolutely no recollection of this guy or him and Tracy being married. This reeks of desperation on the writer's part.

  14. Laura, maybe you have a bad memory? Because when Kate Ford appeared as Tracy for the first time, she was still married to him.

  15. Excellent....that is sure to fire up the drama...that is 'Tracy'....

I just about remember those scenes with the new Tracy and Robert. Good to know the background. Thanks Nora!

Had to laugh at Ken and Deidre trying to convince the couple that a cheating kiss doesn't mean the end of the marriage. Then when Tracy is caught in bed with Robert's best friend, it's all "an infidelity doesn't have to mean the end of a marriage"! Somehow I can't see anyone today saying something similar to Tracy.

    And I miss Deidre. :(

  17. Robert was Tracey's husband off screen when she was living away from the street from 1996-2002. When Tracey was played by Dawn Acton they got married & left, when she came back played by Kate Ford in 2002 she had separated. She said he had cheated but he came back to find her & tell ken & deirdre that she was the one who cheated & stolen his credit card. All in all he only appeared in about 6 episodes total. I guess they need to think of new storylines for the barlows now that they have lost deirdre, peter & rob all in the same month.

  18. I can see the scene play out when Robert's wife turns up to "sort" Tracy out.

She will point and call Tracy either a "bitch", "cow" or some other name, Tracy will stand there and gurn, Robert will look gormless, Ken will hover in the background sighing with a constipated expression.

Of course the previews will hype it up to be some massive confrontation.

  19. I've really enjoyed watching the Robert Preston scenes! I look forward to seeing him again - he was pretty adept at standing up to the Little Madam. Good lookin' fella too...

  20. Bring back Robert Preston!!! The original, NOT Shane Ward!!!! Julian Kay was a real hottie!!!

  21. Corrie would be crazy not to recast Kay, he's hot and can act !!

  22. Bring back Kay corrie pllleeeaaaasssseee

  23. All the way, Kay Kay Kay!!!

  24. There is no denying that Tracy is a great character and anything that gets her more storylines or causing more trouble is great for Corrie. Not sure the addition of Sarah Harding is a good idea. Corrie used to have credible actors...another pop star no thanks! Kym Marsh may have done an ok job but leave it at that. I don't think the older viewers will be keen on this. Corrie is in danger of losing its credibility and turning into the next Hollyoaks. It's not a show for teenyboppers! As for Robert Preston - bring back the original! A decent actor is what the show needs!!

  25. Can't wait to see what the actor looks like now.....I think he's called Julian Kay? Does anyone know if it's the same actor coming back?

  26. Yes, bring back the original actor. Kay sounds good.

  28. It would make more sense to bring back Julian Kay as people who remember Robert from so long ago would know instantly who it was.

  29. What's with producers thinking they can just sack off an actor and replace him with a "celebrity" - especially when there's already a celeb being introduced, it makes more sense to use a bit of continuity and bring the same guy back. I loved his argument with Tracy at the end of that clip, think they have some good chemistry there which will be fun to watch. Bring back Julian Kay as Robert!

"Actor Julian Kay played the original Robert."

Can we expect to see Susan Boyle coming in as Mavis Wilton soon too?! Or maybe Les Battersby will return in Jim Davidson's skin...

This celebrity thing is just getting a bit daft now. If the original actor is available, just get him booked and we start to enjoy good storylines again instead of more tabloid gossip.

Oh I hate it when they do this ..can soaps please stop bringing in celebs!
It really spoils the realism and stops you believing in the character - even more so when they replace a perfectly good actor with a celeb just for the sake of it. Julian Kay was really good as Robert. We are not that shallow Corrie. I'm with Liz - Give us back our Robert Preston!

  33. Maybe it will open up a whole new storyline regarding who Amy's dad is. I don't think actual paternity was ever established and it would take other storylines in new directions. Would Steve crash back into depressionif he thinks he's not the daddy? How would wifie of ex-hubby feel abouta child suddenly being on the scene?? Oh the places the story could go!!!
