Deirdre Barlow's farewell storyline finalised by ITV

A spokesperson for Coronation Street has confirmed that Deirdre's farewell storyline has been decided. The short statement simply reads: "We have finalised details for a plot explaining Deirdre's departure, which will be screened in the summer."

Coronation Street Executive producer Kieran Roberts spoke earlier this year about the show's plans to say farewell to Anne Kirkbride, who portrayed Deirdre Barlow for 42 years.  Anne passed away in January this year, aged 60

Kieran said: "She was a wonderful woman, and a wonderful actress. We all miss her terribly. At the moment, we're respecting her memory. We're talking to her family and respecting the family's wishes, but what I can tell fans of the show is that we will be saying farewell to the character on screen later this year.

"The exact plans are not yet finalised but that will certainly happen. It's important that, in the real world, the family are able to say farewell to the woman. We absolutely support and respect all of that.

"Later in the year, we will make sure that Coronation Street is able to say a farewell to Deirdre."

Anne Kirkbride's memorial service will be held on May 30 in Manchester.

Odd that Diedre hasnt even been mentioned and yet Ken is already sniffing around Audray.

  2. So I guess after months of acting as though she never existed, Deirdre will now be mentioned by residents and her family leading up to her farewell?
I hope though that Deirdre's farewell isn't taken over by other storylines namely the Platts!

  4. It's always so much harder watching death/funeral scenes when you know the actor has actually died. She will be missed.

  5. Whatever the exit story turns out to be, it's the one that was agreed with Anne Kirkbride's family, and perhaps even herself. In the event, it may not be the one the fans hope for but it's got to be the best choice of storyline under the circumstances.

When Rob went to prison, there was a glimmer of character development in Tracy. It's been lost since then and she's back to panto queen. Really and truly, her mum's departure from the Street ought to be her wake-up call when she grows up.
