Next week on Coronation Street will see Billy the Vicar and Sean feature in a homophobia storyline.
The two of them head out in the sunshine for a walk in the country. After they stop for a break in a country pub they decide to stay the night but the homophobic landlord lets them know in no uncertain terms that he's not happy about having a same-sex couple stay at his pub. He lies to Sean and Billy and tells them there are no rooms left, blaming a double booking he hadn't seen earlier when he agreed to let them stay.
Sean stands up for his rights and challenges the bigot which makes Billy realise his true feelings for Sean and the pair of them finally have a kiss.
I'm loving Billy the Vicar (as regular readers will no doubt have guessed by now). I wonder if we'll see them eventually get wed? I do hope so.

They just don't work for me as a couple. I love Billy. But he and Sean seem so mismatched. Sean needs to grow up a lot for them to work for me.
ReplyDeleteThe only way their relationship will last is if Sean matures. He will have to cope with sharing Billy with the church and the activities that go along with it. It could work but only if Sean understands that the world doesn't revolve around him. The storyline could go the other way and Billy leaves the church.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I am glad Sean has a new relationship and as much as I really like Billy, I don't really understand what Billy sees in Sean though I can see why SEan likes Billy. He's lovely. It's too bad Marcus wasn't still with us. I could really see he and Billy as a couple. They would have a lot in common. I do think SEan needs to settle down a bit and get a bit more confidence. It's his insecurity that seems to have him shooting himself in the foot where relationships are concerned.
ReplyDeleteTvor, very well said! As the mother of a gay son I would love to see my son find someone like Billy or Marcus! As much as I like Sean as a person he is very needy and immature and can't see him and Billy having a future together. Like you said Sean needs to settle down and get more confidence. Due to the nature of Billy's work he'll a partner who will stand by him and support him. Unfortunately I can't see Sean being able to do that.
ReplyDeleteTvor, you took the words right out of my mouth. I agree that Billy and Marcus, two professionals who happen to be gay, would be better suited. Don't get me wrong, I love Sean, the best ever pseudo son to Eileen and best friend to every girl at the faktry, who flounces and primps and behaves nowhere near his late 30s. He is a fun campy character who either needs a major maturity upgrade to match Billy, or we need to hear from Billy that Sean's youthful excess keeps him from becoming an old fuddy duddy. Or a bit of both. Or, this coupling flames out and Sean is paired with a more artsy, flamboyant character who can stay off stage with Fat Brenda, and we see more of Billy with Emily and the community center, and maybe one day Marcus returns. What I don't like how quickly this relationship developed, but that's the way it's done on Corrie, one night of drinks and boom, we're deep and meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI like Billy. I think in the long run he will make Sean a better, less egocentric person.
ReplyDeleteNever underestimate what makes people compatible. Maybe Billy likes that Sean is a bit of an immature brat who requires some discipline:) Would that we got to see that dynamic in their everyday interactions, it could be both fun and saucy.
ReplyDeletePart of me wonders if this is just the first part of a longer storyline in which Billy and Todd become a couple. Being with Sean puts them in close proximity, and what could begin as dislike on Todd's part and a genuine desire to help a troubled soul on Billy's may lead to something more.
ReplyDeleteWhatever happens, I would love to see a scene where Billy calls Sophie out on her hypocrisy when it comes to what she says she is (Christian) and how she typically acts towards people.
Question from overseas: without a discussion of legal minutia, is denying accommodation based on sexual orientation (or ethnicity or nationality or religion,...) actually allowed in the UK? Does it go on anyway? It is a huge and quite embarrassing discussion in the US, but thankfully not in my state.
ReplyDeleteThis is taken from a real life case when the propretior of a B&B was prosecuted successfully I think as he refused two gay men a bed for the night saying he was a Christian and it offended his morality. Going to be interesting that Billy is a Vicar. I like Billy but not Sean who I think consistently overacts.
