Can you identify this 1960s Coronation Street live sketch?

With thanks to @grahamh75 on twitter for alerting us to this long forgotten live Coronation Street sketch.  We're not sure, but it might be a Royal Variety performance.

It features Corrie characters Minnie Caldwell, Elsie and Dennis Tanner, Sunny Jim, Ena Sharples and Len Fairclough.  If you can identify it, do please leave a comment.

  1. Are my overseas ears mistaken or was their accent much stronger than you'd hear from most of today's cast?

  2. Yes I think I've seen that clip before. Something's telling me it was a Royal Variety thing.

  3. I must be getting old - I remember that from it's original transmission! I presume it was the Royal Variety Show, but since the end cap says "Royal Gala" it's possible there was an extra Royal show that year.

  4. abbyk at 17:19 -- definitely regional accents have diluted over time! Watch any older shows and sometimes I can barely understand the characters! Oddly for me, went to see The Second Best Marigold Hotel yesterday and was so surprised by Maggie Smith's cockney accent in this one -- didn't recall it from the first one, and have never noticed that about her before!

  5. It's from a Royal Gala that took place on 29th November 1966 in aide of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and the Bowles Rocks Trust in front of Prince Philip (hence the laughter at Ena's comments about him). The show took place at the London Palladium and was broadcast on ITV on Sunday 4th December at 8.35pm. Here's a link to the TV Times issue covering the event:

  7. Great reading that retro TV times for the ads, the plots and cast on Corrie at the time, about the Gala, and for Sue Nichols in Crossroads! Thank you John from Corriepedia.

  8. This is wonderful! Live theatre is so different from TV... The actors all look fit and powerful, the vitality wafts off of them!
