Melanie Hill joins Corrie as a new friend for Roy
Last month we reported that plans are afoot for Roy Cropper to befriend a woman who he meets down at his new allotment. Today Coronation Street have announced that the new character is to be called Cathy Matthews and will be played by Sunderland born actress Melanie Hill. She is famous for her roles in Playing the Field, Waterloo Road, Bread and just recently playing Cilla Black's mam.
She is described by producer Stuart Blackburn as: "Recently widowed, Cathy is an engaging yet sometimes chaotic woman. Though her indecision can drive her friends mad, behind the vulnerable front is a woman who truly does have a heart of gold."
Melanie said: "I'm chuffed to bits to be joining the cast of my favourite soap. I and my family grew up watching it and to actually be working on it is a dream come true."

Melanie is a great actress - I remember her as Aveline in Bread. Lets hope she is a warm kind person and not yet another shrew like Mr Blackburn seems to have a penchant for.
ReplyDeleteOh here we go again with my worst nightmare, a well known actor from a high profile tv show. Didn't they learn a lesson with Stella & Gloria?!?
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the old Corrie practice of casting unknowns from Oldham Workshop and the like?
VERY disappointed.
She's a top notch actress when all is said and done, the likes of whom David Neilson deserves to bounce off. She's well known but not so well known she cant be accepted as a new character. I have high hopes for her. - Micky
ReplyDeleteummm...well I think that our dear Hayley would be well pleased with a new lady friend in her Roy's life...now I wonder....will this be a simple friendship.....or...maybe something more?? (Wondering in Canada......)
ReplyDeleteI always envied Melanie Hill for having once been married to the gorgeous Sean Bean. Yum!!
