Meet the new Bethany Platt

Coronation Street have cast the new Bethany Platt.  Actress Katie Redford will debut as tearaway teenager Bethany this spring when she arrives unannounced in Weatherfield from her home in Milan.

She will be followed shortly afterwards by her furious mum Sarah played by Tina O’Brien who is determined to drag her wayward daughter back to Italy.

But the pair end up staying in Weatherfield causing more than a few headaches for Gail and the rest of the family.

Now 14 years old, Bethany has been studying at an English speaking school and has a fiery relationship with her mum, and an eye for the boys!

Coronation Street will be Katie’s first role, she trained with the National Youth Theatre, she has just finished her first feature film Urban Hymn.  Read her full CV here.

Katie said:"Until I'm actually on set, I genuinely don't think it will sink in that I'm joining the cast of Coronation Street. I know it sounds cliched but it really feels like a dream come true. Bethany Platt is going to be such a fun and witty character to play and I hope everyone enjoys her return as much as I'm going to!"

Oh quelle surprise another "tearaway" teen. Change the script writers. Even more Platt screen time, should just rename it Plattination Street.

  2. Hmm. The article doesn't say how old this actress is and neither does imdb, but her resume gives her 'age range' as 16-25, which suggests she's a good few years older than Bethany, who won't be 15 until later this year.

  3. Why don't they just dig out the old scripts to use as it sounds like it's just going to be a rehash of the same old teenage plots/dialogue.
Why couldn't they just have a 'normal' teenager.....or maybe they don't exist anymore.

  4. WHAT, she looks 45, way to ruin her before she even starts :(

  5. From Milan to Weatherfield.

This girl's in for some serious culture shock...

  6. It says on "soap squwak" that she is 19, so no doubt they will throw her into adult relationships. Another member of the Platt family where the child looks 2 years younger than the parent.

  7. Apparently the actress is 19. Tina O'Brien was 17 when she played Sarah as a 12 year old. This isn't an issue that should excite us - it has to be done to get round child labour laws.

  8. A wayward teen with an eye for the boys - gosh, what a surprise!!

  9. Tina O'Brien was 16 playing 13 - Katie Redford will be 19 playing 14. There's a bit of a difference there, especially since there aren't really any elibible teen lads for her to 'have an eye' for. If, having cast an older actress (who they admit looks older than 14, that's part of the advertised set-up for the new Bethany, that she looks older than her age) they start setting her up in storylines with adult characters, that's when it will be a problem.

  10. I know she's been to an English-speaking school, but I wonder if she'll have traces of an Italian accent?

  11. same absurd negative crap. Hehehe Frosty, Plattination street indeed.
Why is this happening!? Sometimes I actually realize that if anyone around me ever behaved the way these characters do in real life, it wouldn't make any sense at all. NONE. They would be social misfits in need of a lot of help. They would definitely be the odd ball out. BUT on Corrie, every resident has several, severe personality changes within any given time. False and Falser.
Isn't Faye 14? As if those 2 are even in the same league. Also hope they don't use the Milan thing to give her false import.
Don't have a beef with the lovely actress, but the casting dept. obviously wanted her to be a hottie akin to her ma/ who's her daddy anyway??
I can't keep up with this new influx of young-uns at the moment.
    Pure crap.

  12. I think she's quite pretty and very well cast. She looks like she could be Tina O'Brien's daughter. And come on, it was bound to happen that the Platt-from-away return eventually! What would Corrie be without Platt or Barlow drama :))))

  13. Has she ever even visited Gail since they left for Milan? It will be interesting seeing Big City in the Backwater. She'll be bored bored bored, hate everyone's clothes, get booted out of the Rovers, introduce Craig to drinking and try to fool around with Zeedan (she's blond and non-Muslim after all).

There aren't enough Barlows to have family drama right now (has anyone seen Simon lately?), the Grimshaws have no generational issues, and we've had our fill of Nazirs for a while. Gotta go with the Platts for family time. Please have Sarah get a flat at Victoria Court, or they'll have to admit David's house is really a Tardis. And yeah, she's pretty. And newly hatched, so lets be nice.

  14. I would have been much more shocked if the description read,"She's a good student who is a hard worker," but whatever.

  15. She does look a lot like the little twins who used to play the child Bethany, and is well cast to fit into the family - the age gap between her and Tina O'Brien is only a year or two less than that between Sarah and Bethany. It's how the character and her storylines will be written that will be the real issue, especially since, as mentioned earlier, there aren't really any 'age appropriate' lads on the Street, other than possibly Craig. (How old is Craig? He's very friendly with Faye, who is only 12, but I think he's a couple of years older?)

It's hard to imagine a 19/20-year-old actress playing against a 15/16-year-old lad, as would be age-appropriate for Bethany - but putting her in potentially romantic storylines with adult characters would be all kinds of inappropriate. Bethany isn't even 15 until the summer.

Maybe that's the storyline - it certainly sounds like it, from the advertising: a precocious lass who wants to be older than she is, interested in older men. It'll certainly grab headlines, generate media interest and boost viewing. It just isn't terribly imaginative.

  16. ITV are saying this actress is 19 but she is in fact 25 and will be 26 in March!!!

  17. She was born in 1989. Do the math and tell the producer he's fired.

  18. ....wow....14 already! It will be fun to see how she interacts with her uncles, Gran and Great Gran....ummm....also I wonder how things with go with Todd when Sarah appears??

  19. there will be explosive story lines everywhere. Think of the possibilities of 2 'young' blonde vixens mixing it up on the boring ol' street.

  20. Maybe it's just me but I'm a little disappointed that Bethany resembles her mother instead of her father Neil Fearns. That would've been an interesting twist with Bethany wanting to know more about her father's family?

  21. It's difficult to tell for sure how young/old she looks from fancy publicity shots. And even if she does look older than 15 so what? I could pass for 18 when I was 14, as well.
