The Return of Cilla

This news might not please everyone but I'm chuffed to little mint balls about it. Wendi Peters is reprising the role of Cilla Battersby later this year in a six week return.

ITV says she'll be back in October and that the storyline will involve Jennie McAlpine's exit for her maternity leave. The storyline is hush hush at the moment but Fiz and Chesney will no doubt get a big surprise when Cilla sashays back into their lives, causing trouble, I would imagine.

Wendi is looking forward to coming back.

"I'm really thrilled to have the opportunity to revisit Cilla and the cobbles for a short while and to see what she has been up to for the last 7 years."

Producer Stuart Blackburn says  “We can't wait to see Cilla back on the cobbles, she's a truly unforgettable character who is at the heart of Corrie's rich history.”

Wendi has been keeping herself busy on screen and doing a lot of theatre work over the past few years. I am looking forward to Cilla's sneer once again! She's one of those "love to hate" characters that I always enjoyed, thanks to Wendi Peters' great portrayal!

  1. Pleased as punch about this - we need a few laughs at the moment and this is one character who can't have changed that much while she's been away.....can she?

  2. I personally like that she's returning. Let's just hope she isn't there to bed hop like SB seems to think we want in ALL our storylines.

  3. YAY! That's brilliant! Hope she stays for quite a long time - will bring some much-needed humour back t' cobbles after a tough time. Great character!

  5. I'm very pleased to hear this. Wendi Peters was excellent as the hateful Cilla!
Really looking forwards to her arrival, she was very funny in an audacious way, but humour is very badly needed on the street these days.
You really don't know what you have, until it's gone...

  8. I couldn't be happier - I LOVED Cilla and can't wait to see what kind of mayhem she brings with her.

And maybe it'll lead to a longer stint in future?

  9. I'm looking foreward to see Cilla as grandmum to Hope Joseph and little Ruby.Besides it's getting tedious seeing the Barlows,Platts and Windasses dominate storylines.

  10. Fabulous news and chuffed to bits for our dear pal Wendi. Corrie needs classic characters like Cilla - desperately. Going to be fun and can't wait to watch - it's been a while.

  11. I love to hate Cilla! Thrilled to hear she's back for a bit! The first time I saw Wendi Peters after she left Corrie I had the worst time trying to figure out where I knew her from!

  14. I wonder how she will get on with Beth, who is a 'Cilla Mini-Me' in many ways...

  15. And whose elastic walled 2 bed house will they squeeze her into, Fiz and Tyrones with Ruby and Hope or Chesney and Shinaid's with Kirk Beth and Craig.

  16. FANSTASIC!!!

Th return of one of Corrie's most Corrie characters! Can't wait to see she mixes with Beth, MARY, Norris, and Julie.

I bet the hair and wardrobe people are thrilled to have Cilla back as well!

  17. I loved Cilla ...she was a wonderful character played so well by this talented actress! She was selfish, greedy, vain, and opportunistic. A terrible mother bordering on negligent BUT I could not stop watching her when I first started watching Corrie. What an amazingly nuanced performance Ms Peters gave of a character one should despise, but I never hated her. I always rooted for her even though she was so clearly in the wrong...why? It was fantastic writing that revealed a vein of humanity even a Cilla Battersby possessed as well as of course an actress who understood this character so well that she managed to avoid the over the top wicked witch, gobby, cruel , crass portrayal one sees so much in the current episodes.

I certainly hope the show does not ruin this character and steps up with material that befits a marvellous character like Cilla and a fabulous actress like Wendi Peters.

  18. Oooh, I thought she was never coming back! This is so exciting! Cilla is a classic character type we are lacking these days. Of course, we have the similar and fabulous Beth, but Beth is overall a softer, kinder woman than crass, selfish, narcissistic Cilla. Wendi Peters is always a joy and I hope the writers use her to the best of their ability.

  21. I love this news. I enjoyed the character of Cilla, and I think it's a great testament to the acting skills of Wendi Peters by taking a character who is so unloveable in every way and making them endearing to the audience.

Unlike some other actors who take characters that are supposed to be loved and make them completely unenjoyable....those shall remain nameless.
