Since I joined the Coronation Street Blog team back in 2012, what I have mostly done is conducting polls - be it for favourite characters, couples or certain archetypes and moments in Corrie history. As you may have probably noticed, I've been in a lull these past couple of weeks about what to write about on the blog. Inspiration has been lacking it must be said.
With those polls, I was in control. I was the one who chose the characters, couples etc and their groupings. And yes I did face criticism about not making the polls democratic. Not making you, the readers, choose who you like. And yes that is a fair argument and I have taken it on board. And here is the result.
I would like to know who's your all-time favourite Corrie female. No poll, just leave your comments on here or on Facebook or Twitter - completely open to you. I'm curious what the response will be. And yes, in due course, I will ask you for your favourite Corrie male.
Now, I'm sure you can guess who my favourite Corrie female is. You're right: the radiant redhead that is Rita. From her quick wit and humour to her dramas and from her various hairstyles to her love of singing, Rita for me resembles what's great about Corrie. She's one of those characters that has managed to survive the ages without being past her sell-by date. I read somewhere that when Len Fairclough died, Rita was born. Despite her original on-screen partner's exit, Rita as a character wasn't affected. She became an independent businesswoman running the Kabin. She became involved with Alan Bradley and she reached the pinnacle with that storyline. She has maintained strong friendships over the years with the likes of Mavis, Alf, Bet, Norris, Emily, Ken and Audrey and has become a mother figure to many. And that's why she's my favourite character.
And Annie Walker is a very close second!

I loved Becky she was funny with a heart of gold and she showed people how to love life. I was so happy when she finally found a man of her dreams.
ReplyDeleteTop three? Annie Walker third, Ena Sharples second, Hayley first.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately a lot of my favourites are no longer there. I often wonder what would have happened if Raquel had married Curly, Blanch had been around to sort Peter out, Hilda hadn't left with Dr Lowther.
ReplyDeleteI love Deirdre and Audrey and wish they were used more. Kylie is certainly getting there and Steph is showing a lot of promise.
My all time favourite though has to be Elsie Tanner, as a young teenager I didn't really really know anyone that brave and brassy, I was in awe of her.
Rita, of course!
ReplyDeleteElsie Tanner. Without a doubt.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite has to be Elsie - it was great to get the update from Dennis, that although she had sadly died, she had found happiness at the end of her life.
ReplyDeleteMy close second is Hilda another strong woman with humour and her scenes after Stan died were a masterclass.
Sadly none of the current crop come anywhere close.
Though quite young at the time, I was fascinated by the bold, brassy,out-spoken, yet surprisingly sensitive character that was Elsie; she really had 'It'.
ReplyDeleteAlthough not my favourites, Annie Walker and Ina Sharples were also immensely interesting characters, and so well acted and typical of people of their ilk.
I love Hilda very much, she had such character. She was amusing, she was sensitive, she was inquisitive, and most of all she epitomized the working class woman who'd had a tough life, but always took delight in the simple pleasures and bonuses in life. She was a positive person, and a character you could look to for inspiration when times were tough.
Gail used to be a favourite for many years, not so since she's been changed.
I do like Audrey now, and Deirdre can be very funny like her mother Blanche was.
Kylie I hope won't go through too many transformations as she fun to dislike and now has grown into maturity.
Maude!! I love me some Maude.
ReplyDeleteMaude!
ReplyDeleteAnnie Walker: on the face of it an unsympathetic character but when the chips were down for someone, she was at the front of the queue with tea and sympathy. Brilliantly written for, superbly acted and still much missed, even after 31 years.
ReplyDeleteElsie Tanner, all the way!
ReplyDeleteElsie Tanner without a doubt. I loved that character. Hilda Ogden made me laugh and cry and my heart just went out to Becky. Wonderful character, trying so hard to fit in and failing most of the time. She was great and I miss her a lot.
ReplyDeleteMy number on has to be Elsie Tanner, even as a three year old I played at being Elsie!
ReplyDeleteLater on I liked Bet Lynch, Phyllis Pearce was also a favorite, plus there's the unforgettable Hayley and in recent years Blanche was an absolute legend.
Blanche hunt
ReplyDeleteElsie Tanner hands down the strongest sassiest and sexiest of them all!
ReplyDeleteEna Sharples. There was a beautiful heart of gold behind that tough-as-nails exterior.
ReplyDeleteI can only make comment on the Corrie women I have known in my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI'd choose Blanche, Deirdre and Carla.
ReplyDeleteLeanne Battersby. She's fiery and loud and not afraid to speak her mind.
I really really love her relationships with Simon and Peter, as she also shows a softer and more vulnerable side. Jane is a wonderful actress and a great asset to the show!
Ida Barlow - without a doubt!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely.....HAYLEY......miss you terribly......
ReplyDelete1. Rita
ReplyDelete2. Hayley
3. Angie (that worked in the factory - friends with Curly).
Of all time? Has to be Bet Lynch. The tart with a heart of gold, there has never been a more iconic female character in Corrie apart from perhaps Hilda Ogden. As for the present time, I think its Audreh Arkchewlar. The rest of them are rather spiteful harridans, Rita included - sorry to Rita fans out there, her treatment of Dennis has ruined her for me.
ReplyDeleteEna Sharples - feisty, fearless but fair!
ReplyDeleteMy favourites would be Elsie, Bet and, jointly, Audrey/Deirdre. I used to love Rita but something horrible's happened to her. If Sally sticks around, she'll be right up there with the legends.
ReplyDeleteAnnie Walker..she had a wonderful withering stare that could say more than a thousand words...she was also funny though she didn`t mean to be and was beautifully acted by Doris Speed, a superb actress.
ReplyDeleteOh and I forgot to say Alma in my previous post, I adored her, she lit up the screen.
ReplyDeleteSarah will always be my favorite. Becky was awesome too.
ReplyDeleteElsie Tanner will always be number 1 for me. Bet is 2nd and Racquel is 3rd. Good idea this poll!
ReplyDeleteI love Audrey too!
ReplyDeleteBet Lynch and Deidre Barlow
