Samia Ghadie, who plays Maria Connor in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Weekend show today, Sunday 11 May.
Aled Jones presented the weekend show and chatted to Samia about Maria's 14 years on Coronation Street. On her current storyline working with the actors who play Tyrone and Fiz, Samia says: "It's been a really nice challenge, really nice working with Alan (Halsall) and Jennie (McAlpine) again, visiting those old relationships."
Samia says that she was at drama classes with Andy Whyment when she was 6 years old and Alan Halsall and Jane Danson were part of it all too. "It's nice that we're all in the same job and we've all grown up together."
There's a clip of Maria's storyline from Monday night's episode of Coronation Street shown on the programme. Todd winds up Maria and Tyrone steps in and punches Todd to the floor before Fiz drags Tyrone out of the pub.
She says that as part of a big storyline, the cast can work up to 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. "It can get exhausting but we love it," she says.
Will she be in Corrie forever? Aled asked. "I've been there all of my adult life and I'm really happy to be there," she replied.
Samia said that she used to do extra work in Coronation Street when she was a child. She remembers Bill Waddington, who played Percy Sugden, handing her his cast card with his signature and photo on it.
And Samia's mum was a comedy singer Bubbles Levine in the 1970s and she travelled the world with her band called The Deep Emotion.

Not even this sudden out of character and frankly unbalanced behaviour can make Maria interesting. Wooden, pointless and past her sell by and another one that mumbles.
ReplyDeleteSamia is great actress and I find Maria a great and interesting character. Glad the actress had no plans to leave. No such thing as a character being passed it.
ReplyDeleteShe is one of my favorites, but needs a better storyline than constantly falling for the wrong man.
ReplyDeleteSamia's not a bad actress given the right material, and sometimes she gets it. I think she might have a talent for comedic material but she always gets the whiny, drippy stuff. I expect she's got a job for life if she wants it. She may know her limitations and therefore is happy to stay.
ReplyDeleteSamia is a brilliant actress, anyone who says otherwise should check out her performances throughout 08/09 on YouTube!! She was simply stunning throughout the whole Maria/Liam/Carla/Tony s/l!!
