Jimmi Harkishin to take break from Coronation Street

There's a story in today's Daily Mirror that says Jimmi Harkishin, who plays Coronation Street's Dev, is to take break from the soap due to exhaustion

The Mirror says that the actor is understood to be suffering under a relentless filming schedule and plans to go travelling with his daughter before she goes off to university

Show officials confirmed the actor was planning to take the time off after making a formal request with producers, but insisted he would definitely return after the break.

Confirming the break a Corrie spokesperson said this week: “It was agreed way in advance, and other actors who have been on the show a long time have done the same thing from time to time and taken a sabbatical.”

Time for Dev to go permanently so we can get a new family in the shop. This character has been past his sell by for a very long time.

  2. Hope Dev's ghastly son takes a break and comes back with a new actor!

  4. It is time for Dev to go permanently (even if he is "lovely")
Please can Sunita's Aunties come and run the shop, they would be a breath of freah air.

  5. Perhaps it's been a long time coming because Dev hasn't actually been in much lately. Dev would be OK if he was comfortably set up with a permanent partner and his storylines were around the business or local politics. But his romances are always a bit icky. I hope he has a reasonable exit story and not that Uncle Uhmed is ill and needs looking after.

  6. I wasn't a fan, but post-Sunita Dev has gotten more interesting. It would be nice for him to take the twins on a long visit with family in India, but I like how he fits in with the neighbors and hope he returns. Centered and repurposed.

  7. I never cared for his character. It's his voice..like nails down a chalkboard. I wish the actor well, and hope he feels alot better after an extended rest...and find another show to be on. I miss Sunita, the old Sunita, not the trollop they turned in into.

  9. Good for him. I wonder how they're going to write him out?

  10. I agree....Dev is past his sell-by date....with Sunita now gone...there really hasn't been a good story line for his character to continue on with.... Yes...Sunita's aunties...now that WOULD be a FUN duo!! Yes..Mr.Blackburn...let's go that route!

  11. I'm sorry but now that Stella is gone and the gym is up and running, what the heck was Dev going to be doing on the Street anyway? Why do we need an announcement, as he could have just disappeared off our screens for a long stretch, like so many others.

  12. For such a long running character, he isn't used a great deal - was he even in any of the year-by-year top 10s the site published recently.

The corner shop is hardly used these days, and a new (and good!) family in there would completely revitalize it. Then it could go back to being one of the main meeting points in the street, as it always was.

I hope you enjoy your holiday, Jimmy... don't hurry back... ever.

  13. Wonderful news! Question is what will happen to the shop, now as much as I don't like Mary, I hope she's left in charge and annoys the hell out of Sophie.

  14. We just met Jimmi in Canada a week ago. He is one of the nicest Corrie stars we've met. He actually asked questions about us at the meet and greet. I think Dev adds comedy to the show and this past year and a bit we've seen a lot of good drama with him too. I wish Jimmi well and hope he returns. Remember - we can't blame the actor for the lame story lines. I agree - Ken - how sick can your grandson be and Kevin - your father must have had the worst heart attack ever.
