It’s a Weatherfield wedding for Carla and Peter, or as I like to call them by their celebrity name, CarPet.
Carla looks lovely in her frock made by Hayley and Peter’s almost driven to drink the night before the wedding but is saved by the doorbell when Tina turns up. The two of them have a heart to heart before Carla returns and stops them from getting to know each other more. Anyway, the wedding takes place somewhere posh, as you’d expect, and CarPet are hitched without too many hitches. “I promise to help you be the best you can be,” says Carla in her vows (wasn’t that line lifted from Gillette?) But when the partying starts, Carla has too much to drink and after the do ends, Peter and Tina end up snogging while Carla snores away in the bridal suite.
There were some lovely comic moments this week when Tim decides to become a window cleaner. It’s not the career Sally would have liked her new fella to have, especially when his new job comes with a manky old van that he parks outside Sally’s house in full view of all the neighbours. Sally’s not too put off though, as she asks Tim to move in, and knowing which side his bread is buttered, of course he says yes. Sally’s got more on her mind when she’s left in charge of the factory as the new Mr and Mrs Barlow go off on honeymoon and she’s given the keys to the factory. “I’ll have to put these somewhere safe,” she tells Tim, waving the keys and a potential new plotline in front of Tim’s greedy eyes.
Hayley’s son Christian turns up again but this time Fiz gets to him first, warning him to back off because Hayley’s got cancer. But Christian doesn’t back off, he returns once more with a plea for Hayley to give him five thousand pounds and in return she can see her grandchildren. Does she fall for the sorry sob story from her son? Yes, I’m afraid that she does. Roy can’t understand it. Fiz and Ches can’t understand it and neither can I, but Hayley tells them in the Rovers that she’s had the best day ever meeting her grandkids and doesn’t begrudge Christian the cash. A more cynical mind might ask if they were really his kids and add that he’ll be back for more dosh.
And finally this week, Dev decides to start to lose fat and keep fit. He buys himself the right gadgets, the outfits, the blood pressure monitor but doesn’t do much more than a few steps on his new treadmill in the corner shop before he decides it might not be for him. Or as Sophie says, “You’ve got all the gear, but no idea”.
And that’s just about that for this week.
This week's writers were Peter Whalley, Simon Crowther, Susan Oudot. Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/11/exclusive-all-current-corrie-writers.html

Am I the only one that is finding the Hayley story unnecessarily cruel.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd far rather her final months be filled with her and Roy doing things they'd always wanted to do (like the Blackpool trip, which was delightful), rather than first Roy's stubborn refusal to go along with Hayley's wishes, dragged on for episode after episode, causing her more grief, and then the for her vile son to turn up and fleece her of £5000.
I'd have much preferred him to have made his peace with Hayley before she dies and let her see her grandchildren without having to pay so heavily for just a few minutes of happiness.
This whole storyline has been not so much bitter-sweet as simply bitter.
It's bad enough we are losing Hayley, and God knows Cancer is a horrible enough way to die, without salt being rubbed our wounds.
IMHO, Corrie has badly misjudged this storyline and our affection for Hayley.
I think you are totally correct. I don't like the way Hayley has been behaving-almost like a bully-in order to get her wishes agreed to. Maybe that's the intention of the writers, to portray Hayley as being fearful of losing control of her life and/or having all kinds of unpleasant memories resurfacing. It seems to me that Roy and Hayley always came out getting the rough end of the deal in many storylines.I just wish they would let the character go with peace, happiness and dignity, surrounded by those she loves and who love her. A reconcilliation with her son-who really does use the money to turn his life around- would be lovely and does often happen in real life. Would be a good chance to introduce a whole set of new characters into the street too-Roy would be a step-grandad. How cool is that!!!!
ReplyDeleteHas Hayley's cancer spread to her brain? Seriously, 5000 pounds (sorry had to spell that out; on my American keyboard, I have no idea where the pound sterling symbol is hidden) is too much for a member of the working class to hand over without first checking with their spouse. I don't think asking to see a collection letter would have been out of order, but Christian certainly did. And yes, I was wondering if they are really his kids.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John M, everyday can't be a trip to Blackpool, but there have been very few memory makers since they returned. This week's only sweet gesture came from Jenna, having a photo waiting for them when they got home. Time is short, there should be more. Time to bake cookies with Hope!
