As it's a lovely sunny Friday and I'm feeling in a wedding-y mood, I thought I'd ask all our blog contributors which Corrie wedding is their ultimate favourite. News that Carla is set to propose to Peter Barlow set my mind boggling as to the lavish wedding Ms Connor might plan for herself. Carla Barlow does sound quite good I think.
Anyway, which wedding is your own personal favourite? Let's face it, there are plenty to choose from. It seems the days are long gone where a Weatherfield wedding can take place without disruption, lies and deceit or police intervention. Does anyone else long for a straight forward wedding, or would that just be too dull for words?
Personally, I loved both of Roy and Hayley's weddings, apart from Mary's involvement in the second one. I also remember enjoying Alf and Audrey's nuptuals, courtesy of a DVD boxset. There was a wonderful lack of pretentiousness to the proceedings - Alf just couldn't wait to get his hands on the pies on offer in the Rovers Select. Of course nowadays everyone has to get married in a stately home or have an extravagant theme to their weddings.
One of the most famous of all the Coronation Street weddings has to be Ken marrying Deirdre back in 1981. We know all the history of this and the coincidences involving a certain Royal wedding taking place at the same time. I loved the follow up in 2005 which also saw a similar doubling up. I know which wedding I was more interested in!
So what's been your all time favourite Corrie wedding? And which characters would you love to see wed who have not yet tied the knot?

My favourite will always be a wedding that never was - when Sharon Gaskell ran out of her wedding to Ian Bently. Sharon had already tried and failed once to commit suicide because of Ian messing her around so much and finally on her wedding day she had the sense to ditch him at the altar. I will never forget the scenes of her running along the cobbles in her wedding dress - just as snow was starting to fall in Mancheter. With Sharon's troubled mind, the dres and the snow, it was such a beautiful, eerie shot, that has stayed with me.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Hayley and Roy's wedding, and I enjoyed Becky and Steve's as I was just waiting for something to go wrong after she was horribly drunk the first time around haha!
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed Steve and Tracy's wedding simply because of Becky and how she waited until they were official married to break the news to Steve that (shocker!) Tracy is a lying, manipulative cow.
And who could forget the heartbreaking impromptu marriage between Leanne and Peter at the hospital? Though it is still hard to figure out if Leanne was following her heart or her guilt there...
I also enjoyed Carla and Tony's wedding, (loved the purple dress!), because despite him having murdered Liam, I always had a soft spot for that Scottish psycho.
I really hope Carla and Peter make it up the aisle as I simply adore them together. They may have began out of an affair, but then again so many iconic Corrie couples did as well. I think this wedding of Carla's might be more laid back and less posh as the actress herself said in the interview that Carla is done with the grand gestures. This marriage, (unlike Tony and the horrid wedding-that-never-was with the vile Frank Foster), for her would be based on love more than financial security (Frank and Tony) or choosing the safe option in her mind (Tony) over the more risky one (Liam).
I still believe she loved Paul as they were together for 10 years before he was killed, and we only saw the last few months of their marriage together, and I think Liam will always be the love that could have been; but Peter is the love of her life and I find their chemistry just brilliant!
Both Barlow weddings
ReplyDeleteRoy and Hayley's wedding is my personal favourite. :-)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh I do love a good Corrie wedding though, and I certainly hope that Carla & Peter's wedding turns out to be a beautiful ceremony because they're made for each other.
Karl and Paul are both leaving soon, so I guess their weddings are doomed.
While I can definitely see Carla and Peter getting married eventually (and I agree Carla Barlow has a nice ring to it), I'm not convinced it will happen this year - even if that's what they initially plan. In an ideal world surely the writers would want Ken to be there? Therefore, I believe there's more chance of Peter and Carla's wedding happening next year when we will know once and for all if Ken is returning.
I agree with Lily, if the wedding does go ahead, it will be more about highlighting the way Peter and Carla feel about each other but there's always wedding drama so it will be interesting to see what the writers come up with!
No question: Steve and Tracy.. and Becky's wedding gift. Priceless!
ReplyDeleteFor me it would have to be Roy and Hayley followed by Steve and Tracy. Their weddings were brilliant to watch for very different reasons.
ReplyDeleteGraeme, it's definitely not just you who longs for a straight forward wedding. In fact I love Carla and Peter together so I would rather they didn't get married if it means they get to escape the tedious drama that would build up just to create a will-they-won't-they wedding, where it could all go wrong for them. Peter and Carla have had more than enough drama and disasters, especially with weddings/marriages. Is it too much to ask for a wonderful wedding that we as loyal viewers of Corrie, can sit back and enjoy...
Rita and Dennis' wedding - such a great couple - and a gangster too!
ReplyDeleteRoy and Hayley's weddings were top. I also loved Steve and Karen's second wedding, the one that Tracy interrupted trying to get Amy back from Roy and Hayley and thus the secret of Steve's being Amy's dad came out. Karen's dream wedding was ruined and she took a red stiletto to Tracy! But they got married after all.
ReplyDeleteAshley and Claire's wedding was nice just for the Spiderman Josh and the butcher's salute coming out of the church!
Loved the wedding of Bette & Alec ... her gaudy dress & veil were a hoot!

ReplyDeleteThe Battersby-Brown wedding, hands down. It was so much fun ~ Cilla's '666' Kiss curl hair-do (don't), Status Quo, Stealing the church, the flowers, trashing the hotel room, little chesney breaking into the church, and so much more. It was a winner.
Canadian Bacon Sarny
My favourite wedding didn't really happen - if memory serves me correctly. But Steve and Karen's wedding with Karen and Tracy fighting in the aisle - I think it involved Karen brandishing a stiletto or something. Great dramatic fun!
ReplyDeleteAs for who I'd like to get married... I wanted Brian and Julie to get married simply because I don't believe Julie would leave it this long before planning a fairytale wedding - but with Brian leaving, I guess that isn't happening. Fiz & Tyrone would be a good wedding. Apart from that, I haven't got any particular couples rooting for a wedding imo
My favourite is also one that never took place - when Derek and Mavis jilted each other in 1984. Classic.
ReplyDeleteMaxine and Ashley! An unlikely pairing yet so much in love. Fred was superb 'never forget the passion' Doreen hitting on Tom, Kathleen hiding to watch her son from afar and then reluctantly joining the party. Judy dying just as Gary is giving his wonderful impromptu speech. 'cherish each other as long as you live'. Gary is my all time favourite corrie man! Fred is a close second
ReplyDeleteKaren and Steve did get married, after the fight, he and her talked it over and they married and then announced it to the rest of the guests.
ReplyDeleteThe Battersby Brown wedding was really funny, i'd forgotten the 666 curls!
Mike and Linda Baldwin's wedding.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I really am not a fan of Corrie weddings, full stop. I find they tend to be little more than a diversion that we all cringe waiting for, knowing that something nasty is destined to happen. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteCharlene and Scott Robinson - oops wrong soap ;)
