EXCLUSIVE: The woman who dressed the Coronation Street icons

Coronation Street fans who watched the ITV programme Goodbye Granadaland a few weeks ago will have seen a lady by the name of Edna Walker interviewed on the show.

Edna was the original Head of Wardrobe when Coronation Street started in 1960.

She's the lady who dressed the women - and men - who went on to become some of our best loved and well known Coronation Street icons.

In an exclusive interview here on the Coronation Street Blog, Edna's spoken to me about her time on the show dressing the Coronation Street iconic characters such as Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples and Annie Walker.

The interview's long with some great pictures. To give it the room it deserves, it's here on corrie.net.

I hope Corrie fans enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed speaking to Edna and writing her memories to share.

  7. Great interview! I admit to wanting to know more about her opinion of the current costumes and how well she thinks the wardrobe and characters go together! If she could dress one current character, who would it be?

  8. I did ask her those questions about the current cast and costumes but she kept her own counsel :-)

  10. I wonder how she feels about some of those wardrobe items becoming so iconic. Did that surprise her?

  11. No, she didn't seem surprised at all. A proper Northern woman, took it all in her stride.

  12. Did she happen to mention whose idea "the hairnet" was?

  13. I did ask her about Ena's hairnet but she said it was the make-up department who instigated it, not wardrobe.

  14. How brilliant - thank you!

  15. Great interview Nora. Regarding Ena's hairnet - she wore it for the first time in episode 4 when Ena was shown in bed.

  17. The hairnet was first seen in Episode 5 in the scene in the hospital: http://coronationstreet.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_5_(23rd_December_1960)

  18. Just came across the article about Edna Walker. Loved it! Nora, you should write a book with her. The stories, the pictures, the history... too much fun. And, what a lovely looking woman still.

I do seriously want more though. I bet there's a lot of 'us' out there that would devour more of that.
    Well done.

  19. Catching up on my Corrie tidbits after a nice vacation in the Rockies ~ what a paradise. Just read the Edna Walker article.. So interesting! Loved the details and pics, her personality seems quite strong and beautiful. And, she's still a lovely looking woman.

I want more! Nora, how about collaborating with Edna and others on a small book for the fashion /wardrobe buffs of Corrie(???) There has to be more fun stuff to be shared and you're so darn good at it. That's what I want for Christmas.
