Sue Johnston to leave Corrie as Gloria Price

This comes as something of a surprise to this Coronation Street fan - glorious Glo is to go!

The Sun reports today that Sue Johnston, who plays Corrie's Gloria Price, will leave the soap when her contract ends at Christmas this year.

The paper says Sue's final scenes will be screened next spring but producers have left the door open for a return.

A Corrie spokeswoman said last night: “Sue will be on screen until early spring 2014 when Gloria will leave Weatherfield for the time being.”

What do you think about the going of Glorious Glo, Corrie fans?

If true - it's in The Vermin Sun - I won't be sorry. Sue Johnston is brilliant actress, but I can't stand the character. Leaving aside her dislike for Sunita, because most people think she started the fire, I stress at her selfish attitude all the time. No. Time to go, Glo.

HOO BLOOMIN RAY. The character has just not worked. A pointless nasty piece of work. Sue Johnson is a great actress and this certainly was not her finest hour. There are many other projects more worthy of her talents and why leave the door open? We dont ever want to see her back thanks. Just take the Expressionless one with you and Corrie will be a better place.

(Just in case there's a "yay or nay")

  4. I guess many of us had hoped that Gloria would be some variation of Sheila Grant with a bit of Barbara Royle thrown in. Instead we got a hate-filled old harridan who added little to Street life. An absolute waste of one of Britain's best actresses.

  5. YESssssss!

So with Karl gone and then the nasty, spiteful Gloria the Price family has halved to just Eva and St Ella. So I wonder will they be kept on by the powers that be as the Rovers family. Usually that's a strong family. This hopefully meaning it will cut St Ella's screen time too.
Yes jumping the gun I know and I can but dream....

(I also read this in the press and all the comments that followed were glad and happy that Gloria was leaving. Love Sue, hate Gloria. So it seems total spin when they say our most popular corrie families)

  6. That's great news! But it would be even better news if Stella and her daughter were leaving too! Please make them all go away!

  7. I agree with 'clinkers' and I love Sue but dislike Gloria. It's not Sues fault that the character hasn't worked she can only work with what she's given and she's a great actress. I expect she will be relieved to go , it must be difficult when your character isn't working out. What a shame , I wish Sue all the very best and look forward to seeing her on screen in another role. Especially the Royle Family Christmas special :))

Safe to say Gloria Price is not well-liked. Love the phrase "hate-filled old harridan."

  10. Corrie producers should hang their heads in shame; Sue Johnson is a fantastic character actress whose talents have been sacrificed by casting her as one of the most unpleasant, unredeemable characters in Corrie for a long time. SJ has shown her exceptional skills in roles as far apart as Grace Foley (Waking the Dead) and Barbara Royle. I'm really not surprised she is wanting to leave Corrie. I can imagine she will be wanting to slam the door that has been left open for her loudly behind her as she runs through it.

  11. It's too bad her character just hasn't gelled. She had so much potential.

  12. We already have Emily and Rita. Then they tried to replace Blanche with both Silvia and Gloria! It was too much.
It makes sense that Deirdre be the new Blanche if they are considering filling that spot.

  13. Like everyone else here, I love Sue but detest Gloria - no redeeming features whatsoever. It was surely a case of hoping the actor's personality and skills would make up for a poorly drawn character. So what was the big hype about bringing the Price family to the fore? They've had contracts extended for another year. It's not impossible that all the Prices will depart next spring. Reckon 'leaving the door open' is a red herring.

  14. Poor Sue, her stint in the Street will be remembered anything but fondly. A real shame and just shows that the penchant for having well known actors in the show just does not work sometimes. The sooner the Prices are out of the Rovers and things move on the better I think.

  15. I think the writers were hoping for another Blanche but the character came across as shallow, selfish, and mean..which Blanche was not, although she had one nasty gob on her, for some reason, it just worked. I loved the way she used to wind Ken up.

Can Glo take Stella with her?

  16. Apart from a (very) few flashes, there's been nothing glorious about this character at all. A terrible waste of Sue Johnston's undoubted talents, and I'm sure she will be relieved to put Corrie behind her. But having said all that, she is still preferable to her insufferable daughter, the beige bore St Ella, who seems to be in every episode and every storyline. Surely now, she must go too - please???

  17. Thank goodness. One down, two to go!

  18. Aw, I love the character and unlike Ms Collins, she's a great actor.

  19. I've been trying to figure out why Blanche worked and Gloria didn't. Apart from the fact that we'd been allowed to watch Blanche evolve over many years, within the Barlow family, so we knew where her curmudgeonly behaviour came from -as opposed to Gloria, who showed up suddenly, nastiness fully formed- the other vital difference was that Blanche had some intelligence, so her observations had the ring of truth. Gloria is nasty and stupid, so her barbs are both mean and wrong! It must have been frustrating for Sue Johnston to play such a dim-witted character. No wonder she's fleeing.
Gloria's equally thick daughter, who tries so hard to be wise and kind, is just as annoying, for similar reasons. Such a lack of intelligence is painful to watch

  20. Here's a good opportunity to get Stella out of the Rovers. Since Gloria put all of her money into the Rovers rebuild, she doesn't have any left to just take off somewhere and start a new life. Stella will have to sell the Rovers to give her the money back. Then she'll take a job in the kebab shop and we never see her again (or she hooks up with Ryan as seems to be the way lately.)

  21. Much as I dislike both Stella and Gloria, the one good thing about the Price family is Eva. At least they have given more dimensions to her character, at once both brassy and vulnerable. I do hope she stays.

  22. Glorious Glo? What happened to Boria? I don't know the actress's other work but this character is dreadful. She is one of the reasons I stopped watching. I guess I'll keep away APril 2014.

  23. I'll have to take the word of all the Brits commenting on Sue Johnston's talent since I am in Canada and had never seen her before her role in Corrie. Never found her 'Gloria' acting above sub-par. Horrible character. Glad she's leaving.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Geez, you people are mean and harsh. That woman lit up the screen every time she was on, it wasn't her fault the writers made her such a self centered troublemaker. However, if the "CHARACTER" were written differently, SJ would be winning awards. I'm so glad to hear they are leaving the door open for her to return. We know how CHARACTERS can take a 180 degree turn in 5 minutes with a personality change, so why not have her return in the future when the time is right for more clever and well written storylines for her brilliant acting chops to bite into.
And for goodness sakes, ENOUGH WITH THE BLANCHE COMPARISONS.. in fact enough with all comparisons. Let a CHARACTER stand for themselves. In time, if they begin to resemble one of our beloved past CHARACTERS, then that's that, so be it. But to harshly package them is petty.

Sue, if you read these blog comments, you are wished well by many and your return to the cobbles will be happily anticipated.

  25. I never thought she would stay very long anyway - a seasoned actress like her, she must be very much in demand.

Same can be said of Stephanie Cole.

Still, it's good to have such professional actors in Corrie, even if only for a short while.

  26. I agree, Sue Johnston is a very good actress and played Gloria well. The character herself is not well drawn or written unfortunately. She ended up being just too mean spirited and selfish with very few flashes of a nice side. I fear that we may not keep Eva for long either, as they haven't really done anything with her since the Eric thing. She's supposed to be friends with Kylie but we never see them talking either.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Amazing that some commenters are so protective of an actor's feelings but insensitive to others' right to their opinion. If an actress cannot tolerate negative reviews, perhaps she is not as professional as you say she is.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Isn't the fact that she played the character of Gloria, who was indeed a Blanche type character, so well, what she was supposed to do? The producers obviously wanted to create this type of character, everyone can't be all sweetness and light, we need these people too. It would be a pretty boring show if everyone was some one everyone liked

  29. I am so glad to hear that the character Gloria is leaving..can't stand her. It is a shame because I love Sue Johnston and I wish that Corrie had written her character with a more softer edge to her, at least sometimes. Gloria is just plain nasty, now if she could take Tracy with her I would be thrilled beyond belief..

  30. That is good news, haven't warmed to Gloria at all, its a shame for Sue Johnston, as she is a good actress, but the character along with the other Price's just haven't worked !

  31. Like other Canadians, I don't know Sue Johnston in other roles - but hate the character of Gloria. While I am glad to hear she is leaving, I DON'T want to lose the character of Eva, and hope she is given more "meat" in the series. There should be plenty of opportunities with other young people in the show.

  32. Gloria never worked, it seemed that once they had decided on introducing the character the writers never knew what direction they wanted to take it and so the PTF was overworked trying to find something that would work with the viewers and never found it.
That said bringing back Liz McDonald who by the time the character left the last time was reduced to a cartoon character of the original character I think will prove to be a mistake, bringing the character back occasionally for a week or two story arc would have worked but I can't see it as a permanent thing.

  33. There for a moment she was ok..just after the fire where she thought she might lose her daughter and then ... right back into the same vile persona the writers put together for her..a real pain in the a$$ and totally in love with her daughters waste of space ex.

  34. Like other Canadian viewers, I hadn't seen Sue Johnston in anything prior to Corrie, so I found the anticipation and reactions of those who knew her other work interesting. Recently, I had the opportunity to see a couple of episodes of Waking the Dead and I now understand what everyone was talking about. She is an excellent actress, sadly wasted in a poorly-written, one-dimensional role. What a shame.

  35. What I never understood about Boria, and which was never explained or delved into by the writers, is Boria's illogical obsession with Karl, and why she was so determined to get him and St Ella back together.

I have two adult daughters. If the husband of either one of them did what Karl did; ie: stole, cheated, lied, gambled, almost brought my daughter's business to ruin, kidnapped and stalked her in a creepy way, and was terminally lazy to boot, I'd throw a parade if she kicked him out. And I would do all in my power to make sure they never, ever reunited. (Luckily for them, my sons in law are nice, hardworking guys. :) )

But Boria? No, she WANTS St Ella with this jerk for whatever reason I've never fathomed. Doesn't she LIKE her daughter?

For just that reason alone I could never warm to her. From her first step onto the cobbles she started her campaign to get Karl back into Stella's life. Why? This was never explained.

She is one of the reasons I stopped watching Corrie.

And like almost everyone else, I don't blame the actress for this horribly and ineptly written character. I watched her in Waking The Dead, so I know she's a good actor.

I might start watching again when Liz returns.

There is something deeply creepy about Boria's obsession with Karl; I wonder if she fancies him herself? Perhaps it's to show how deluded the woman is? I've said it before: the failing with the Price family is that there is no humour there -- they're all self-righteous and don't really mix well with the rest of the street. Thus we have this isolated unit which pokes its tentacles into other people's business but doesn't build relationships outside the family. Eva has no direction. They can all go as far as I'm concerned; in the long run I think they'll be about as durable and memorable as the Mortons were.

  38. I find it very amusing that the article says Gloria was a "hit" with viewers when judging by the many comments on here, the very opposite was in fact true. Deluded and in denial.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gloria has left before and come back so I find this a bit puzzling. She can be quite funny at times, a bit like Norris. Maybe they could have a fling before she leaves. She is a bit like a female Norris to me. It will be worth a lot to see her humiliated when Karl is uncovered.

  40. I think it's a shame Sue is leaving. I knew that she wouldn't stay long term but she hasn't even been on screen for a year (and left for two months in the middle).

I have a feeling the writers never really figured out what she would be like and as a result, the character is flawed and one dimensional. Unlike Sylvia, who has been fleshed out properly and we have seen her vulnerable side, which makes more appealing to viewers than Gloria the gold digger.

If she ever comes back (which I don't think she will after the mess the writers made of it) the writers should have a clear vision of who she is supposed to be. The character was flawed from the beginning and was never really going to work, unfortunately.
