Liz McDonald's Corrie To Do List

With the wonderful news that Liz McDonald is returning to Weatherfield in October, I thought it might be timely to give the delightful Elizabeth a few pointers on what needs to be put right when she totters down the cobbles of Coronation Street once again. So I bring you, without further ado, Liz McDonald's urgent to do list:

1. An obvious one this. Skull drag Stella Price out from behind the Rovers bar. Why else would Liz return to Weatherfield than to sort out the current mess that is the Rovers Return public house.

2. Continuing with the same theme: Reinstate herself as Landlady of the Rovers Return. Liz is much more suited to life as Rovers landlady. She's strong, she's brassy, she's fiery and she's more than a little outrageous. Most importantly of all, she is actually a character with character!

3. After sorting out the Rovers, Liz needs to turn her attention to No. 1 and help old mate Deirdre find a storyline. I loved the period years back when Liz lodged with the Barlows - who can forget Blanche's withering comments on Liz's inappropriate dress sense?! Deirdre needs a friend more than ever and these two share plenty of on-screen history.

4. Next, Liz needs to sort out Steve's love life. I hope Liz would agree that Michelle is just not right for Steven. I've long felt that they are an odd match - Michelle dominates and emasculates Steve and it's not pleasant viewing. Add to that life in the tiny Kebab shop flat with beige Ryan and whiney Katy and I'm hoping Liz will think Steve can do a whole lot better.

5. Once Liz has dealt with Michelle, she needs to track down Karen McDonald and bring her back to Weatherfield. Without a doubt Karen was Steve's best partner in crime. While she gave as good as she got with Steve, their arguments mainly enjoyed a comic slant which made the partnership loveable and affectionate. I know Karen and Liz had a strained relationship - all the more reason for her to return!

6. Liz quite clearly needs a man. And who better that Big Jim McDonald. I think we need to forget about all that armed robbery/bank hold-up nonsense and spring Jim from The BIg House once and for all. I love Liz and Jim together - there is proper chemistry in their tempestuous relationship. I would love to see them run the Rovers together.

Oh to hear Jim utter those much loved words once again: Catch yourself on Elizabeth!

7.  Liz has always had her own unique sense of style. No, I'm not praying for that frizzy ginger perm to make a return. I do hope we see that wonderful zig zag necklace back in Weatherfield though - Liz wouldn't be quite the same without it!

8. On another important style issue, Liz really does need to encourage Steve to stop shaving his head. It really doesn't do him any favours. Stick a lolly in his gob and he could pass for Kojak.

I think that just about wraps up my list. I reckon that'll keep Mrs McD busy for a few months! So what would you like to see our Liz get up to when she clatters back into Weatherfield later this year?

  1. Here Here,I agree with every single word and if they can 'spring' toxic Tracy from prison on a murder charge then Big Jim's relative misdemeanour of armed robbery should be a piece of cake for the writers to deal with.

  2. I would like to see her order a taxi and leave as quickly as possible!!!

  3. Do you really dislike her that much?!

  4. Stella ain't going anywhere, but everything else you've mentioned seems likely.

  5. Great post! I can't wait for Liz to come back to Weatherfield and hopefully kick St Ella out of the Rovers!!! Fingers crossed!! Hopefully Liz and Steve will be back in the Rovers next year at the latest.

The only thing I don't agree with is Michelle Connor. I quite like her and Steve together, although I would love Becky, or Karen, or both of them to return and stir things up.

  6. I'd love to see Jim released and in charge of the Rovers with Liz.

  7. I'd love to see her with Owen.

  8. Really Flaming Nora?! It has to be big Jim I'm afraid!

  9. My guess is that Stella and co will leave next April, the end of the three year contract that another actress(forget the name)declined to do. That means an overlap of six - nine months which surely signals a handover of tenancy. I'd love Karen to come back but only as Suranne Jones and she's far too busy. Steve and Michelle are OK as a wallpaper couple; we need some unremarkable pairings on the Street. I hope Liz can persuade Deirdre that she has to kick Tracy out. Maybe that's where Liz goes to live at first and makes Deirdre see what a mug she's been. I could see Liz making friends with Carla and that might shakes things up.

  10. If all those things were to happen, I would be a very happy Corrie fan!

If the theft from the faktry were to send Traceyluv back to prison, the two grandmothers, Liz and Deidre, could help Steve raise Amy.

I would also like to see Steve with someone other than Michelle. She doesn't seem to think very much of him and is always making fun of him or belittling him.

  11. i disagree. i thnk that michelle and steve are a perfect pair because in the real world steve would not be going out with someone like michelle. but the fact that this is a soap, means that anything can happen and it would be quite dreary if all the couples suited each other it would not be good television. so i think it is a good idea that they have odd couples in corrie it makes it more exciting. stella might not be as feisty as everyone else but at least she does give leanne someone to properly look up to for once. i would love to watch liz on television again and see her reaction when she finds out steve michelle are back together. liz is coming back to solve the crisis i hope it will not wreak michelle and steve relationship.if you think that stella should not work in the pub then you might prefer michelle and steve to work there instead i know i would.with liz coming back to corrie it would make corrie more exciting plus i can not wait to see what the crisis is and what michelle's reaction when liz return's. i hope one day michelle and steve live in the rovers and own the place it would be lovely and sweet to see. plus soaps always find away for steve to always be rubbish when it comes to love. but in the really world love does not always end up bad. i thought they were going to make soaps as realistic as they could and not make as far from realistic as possible. corrie would still be as good if they had steve with michelle forever. then that would be far more realistic then because no relationship is as short as steve's the producers and writers and directors need to be more creative to make corrie as realistic as they possible can.

Liz has already been with Owen (briefly), or has everyone forgotten?! Owen arranged to have Jim beaten up to warn him away from Liz, but the relationship fizzled out anyway, probably because Bev Callard was leaving.

  13. Oh Flaming Nora...not Owen and Liz surely! No one but Big Jim for Liz and if the two were on the cobbles again, I could even forget about the horrible BEIGE one. Speaking of the Beige one, I had to rub my eyes while watching Thursday's episode....she was wearing color!! Someone from Corrie must be reading this blog site.

  14. Graeme, from your lips to TPTB's ears! I touched on a few of these wishes myself in the 'return of Liz' blog yesterday. :)

It would be even better if that taxi never arrived, I just don't see the need for this cartoon character to return, the Street has moved on in the 2 years or so since she left.
She just won't fit anymore unless this new producer expects us to believe that the last two years never happened and Liz is just back from holiday still owning the Rovers and Jim will be arriving momentarily.
The UK holding a referendum to get out of the EU next week would be more believable than this story line.
And before you ask - no I have never liked the Liz character, she always looked like she should be standing on a corner underneath a lamp post.

  16. I posted this to the 'Defense of Stella' blog, but it also belongs here:

The return of Liz signals the fact that TPTB have tweaked to the fact that the addition of St Ella is a major FAIL. Why else bring back a larger than life character like Liz, who is already a proven hit with Corrie fans? In my opinion, we will see a diminishing of face time for the Price gang once Snarl is banged up/dead/gone, with Liz getting back Rovers because St Ella wants a fresh start somewhere else now that Her Hero is gone. And her contract is done.

I see Liz coming back as a waving white flag from Stuart B & co.

The former producer brought us St Ella. She didn't take with the fans, but the arrogant PTB continued to ram her down our throats and use her and her family to the exclusion of many worthier characters, to the dismay and disgust of many fans.

But the new producer is finally accepting the reality of The Beige One's unpopularity, and how she has become just a joke to many.

They would never come right out and admit any of this of course, but bringing back Liz speaks volumes.

  17. I agree with everything you said Graeme, but wish we could have a major disaster land on the Street before she arrives to get rid of all the bland/disliked characters like Stella, Katy, Ryan, Chesney, Nick, Michelle, Sophie, Jenna, Dev, Mandy and Owen, allowing us to see more of Beth, Kirk, Lloyd, Steve (with a better haircut), Deirdre, Emily, Dennis, Rita, Norris and Mary. David & Kylie can stay, and so can Gail, on the understanding she gives up man hunting and finds another interest in her life. Oh yes, new character Sinead can stay too, but not with Chesney. Let's have someone new for her. I could go on, but I won't.

  18. Kathy you may have a point. I admit the first thing I thought when I heard the news was that Liz was Stella's replacement, but I guess that might just be wishful thinking!

  19. Oh I don't know if I can cope with another disaster on the street! I agree with most of the names on your hit list although I'd keep Nick and Chesney, and I don't think we've seen enough of Jenna and Mandy yet. By the way, where is Mandy?! Is she off with Emily somewhere?!

  20. Number 9 : Nude scene.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Number 10: Buy more short skirts.
Number 11: Bring Andy back. I think Steve's craziness has been missing a sober foil since Andy was axed. Lloyd has his own act going on.

  22. I'd forgotten about Andy. Where is he supposed to be these days? Spain?

    ReplyDelete
  23. She's not my favourite character but you really think she should be with Jim? He's more violent than Owen and he even hit Liz! Is it really ever a good thing to put a woman back with her abuser? Jim has his charm but he's a loose cannon and Liz wavers in self esteem. bad mix

  24. 11. Another nude scene.

  25. Graeme, the last we knew of Andy he was running his bar in Spain.

  26. Maybe she can talk her son into a decent haircut...what he's got going now ain't doin' it for me.

  27. I enjoyed this and agree with every point but Karen. Oh but the writers would read your words! lol

  28. Have just returned from holiday to this news and have to say I am pleased. Although probably against the majority of bloggers opinion I don't want tot see Liz in the Rovers. Stella, Gloria and Eva are slowly growing on me and, although Stella is still no classic landlady, I believe Liz's time in the pub is over. Instead I would like to see her take on the much needed role of ageing single woman facing problems with little money, a dead end job and a family who bring her grief. We often talk of the need for a strong landlady but we forget that there is currently a gaping hole for an 'Elsie Tanner' type character on the other side of the bar. Let big jim stay in the slammer and lets see Liz as the tart with a heart instead!- Micky
