Breaking news: Michelle Keegan quits Coronation Street

The official Coronation Street website has announced that Michelle Keegan will be leaving the show next year after six years as Tina McIntyre.

Coronation Street Producer Stuart Blackburn said: ’’There is more than a year of drama to come for Tina McIntyre before we bid farewell to Michelle and plans are already being made for what will be a powerful and gripping story. We will be sorry to see Michelle go but wish her every success for the future.”

Michelle Keegan said: “I have had the most amazing 6 years at Coronation Street and it was such a difficult decision to leave. But I felt it was the right time for me to make the next step in my career.

"I will miss Tina and will always be grateful to ITV and Coronation Street for giving me such an amazing role to play for my first ever acting job. Most of all I will miss the amazing people who work on the show, my acting colleagues, cast, crew, producers and writing team. I have met people who I know will be friends for life. I am very excited about what the coming months hold for Tina and what the future has in store for me."

Well, this is something of a shock, isn't it? I wonder who'll start winning the Sexiest Female Awards at the soap shows now, then?  Step up, Fat Brenda, your time has come.

Well, that was a shock! I wonder how they will write the character out.

  2. well am not surprised, she is only young and needs to widen her skills HOLBY CITY here she comes.

  3. To be honest, I'm surprised she's stayed as long as she has. These pretty young things always think the grass is greener.....

You watch, it'll be Paula Lane next.

  4. This presumably means they've waived her 3 year contract. I could see Michelle in a number of soaps on tv and wish her luck for the future. It's good news for viewers as the baby drama obviously comes to an end. Of course, there's always a chance this statement will be retracted in 24 hours.

  5. With recent statements that both Paula Lane and Catherien Tyldesley are happy to stay, one maybe expected that they were going to leave. This is really a shock.

Even though she's been overused, I've always liked Tina. She's a tough but vulnerable character - following the trend of many Corrie women.

She was ill this week - possibly due to overwork? Maybe that's another reason she's left. For the six years she's been there, she's been in the spotlight, very much like Katherine Kelly.

I like Michelle Keegan and I wish her all the best. I wonder what will be her fate?

  6. Lol @ Rita Duck :D

But yes, good actress and good looks, a winning combination. I expect she'll have every bit as much success as Suranne Jones, Kate Kelly and whatserface. Good luck to her.

  7. I wish her the best of luck but I don't feel shock at this. I don't see it as either a good or a bad thing really. I agree with Llifon that the character has been overused but I think she's ok and has improved a lot over time.

I reckon she's after a career like Katherine Kelly's post-Corrie. I hope she does well but I'm not sure she'll go the same way in the end.

  8. I am guessing her exit story will be that the baby is in fact hers and Tommy's and not Izzy's and Gary's after all.....??? Maybe, possibly.

She has been overused and I don't know how I feel about her leaving tbh. Now, how about another certain over used beige actress taking a hike too.... Well, I can dream.

Good luck to Michelle, I suspect that with her looks and she is a reasonable young actress she will do well. Not sorry to see her character of misery guts Teenar go Frosty has to admit. But I think she has had her time. Perhaps Teenar will run off wi' bey bey and not hand over to the surrogate parents.

  10. I am not at all surprised by this news and not overly bothered by it either. It is now part of the course that the younger actresses and actors stay about this long and then move on. They have to as their characters are burnt out after a few years of continuous storyline after storyline. I wish Michelle all the best and wait with baited breath as the powers that be come up with yet another 'explosive' exit....- Micky

  11. It's a shame. I liked Her as an actress. The young ones always think the grass is greener especially when they start winning awards (albeit sexiest female). I think when the writers drag out a storyline for a whole year it must be really boring as an actor as the main reason they go into acting is for the variety. Maybe she couldn't see any end in sight for this current story.

  12. I understand why anyone would want to stretch their wings, but I always liked Tina and think MK plays her naturally and believably, even when the story asked her to do the tedious. For someone with no family, Tina has strong connections all over the Street. I hope they leave a door open, just in case...

  13. Of course this could be just another untrue rumour like Curly's return or Kylie leaving...

  14. Good luck to Michelle. I think she's a very good actress and she can perhaps go on to do movies.

I read something about Downton Abbey too.

  15. Hurrah...Maybe she can persuade Kym Marsh to leave as well, and make the entire viewership happy?

  16. If she was so determined to leave why did she agree to a six month extension of her contract makes you wonder if it's all a PR exercise.
If she does leave I expect to see her doing a Flanagan in the Sun shortly after that.

  17. Strange this. Oh well...good luck to her. Wonder who they'll line up to be the next local bike.

  18. Not overly surprised as the young ones don't stay a long time. I always liked Tina as a character and MK is a decent actor. I speculate her departure will have something to do with Gary falling for her and her maybe wanting to be a mother to the baby. Perhaps she'll end up leaving the baby with Gary and Izzy and leaving town so she won't have to watch someone else raise it. Too painful.

    Time will tell

Her exit is supposed to be 'explosive' so I am guessing she will change her mind and keep the baby. Gary and she had some sparks when he first arrived (mostly to taunt David). Owen will be incensed that Tina stole Izzy's baby as well as her man. He will bump her off and then two more murders before falling into the canal while ablaze.

  20. Tina's been a character who's been integrated into the community, working in both the Rovers and the Kabin. Although including her in the surrogacy storyline has opened up avenues with the Windasses and Armstrongs, once the baby's born, the dynamics will obviously change. After all, not everyone can live on the street with someone so close that they can no longer be with. There will obviously be plenty of twists and turns concerning Tina, but by announcing it now, it's clear that it's going to be baby related, and that we can start placing our bets now.

  21. I don't mine the Tina character, but the surrogacy storyline and the orange tan were a bit much for me. MK is obviously not in control of her character's story lines, but why hasn't anyone had a word with her about that self tanner?

  22. I personally think this is horrible news. Tina is just about the main reason I've stayed with the show as long as I have. Yet for some reason they keep that vile, arrogant, mouthy, blood-pressure-raising cow Tracy Barlow!

They're letting the wrong actress go. I may have to rethink if I continue the show.

  23. I'm not surprised really, as she's young, popular and there doesn't seem there's much left to do with Tina's character on the Street. Better to leave now than just fade off the screen (a la Sean).

  24. She could have been a Corrie resident for life, like Rita, Ken, and Emily, and had job security. I hope for her sake she's made the right decision. Many actors leave successful shows to stretch their wings, only to fade into obscurity and then resorting to scrambling for bit parts here and there. It's definitely a gamble, but I wish her well, and super stardom.
