From watching tonight's episode, I've noticed that Chesney and Katy are the modern equivalent of that other doomed Corrie couple from the late 1960s, Dickie and Audrey Fleming. The Flemings got married in 1968 - Dickie was 19 and Audrey was 16. And like Chesney and Katy, they grew old too soon and the marriage became boring.
Katy said that her life was dull and suffocating. The same words were expressed by Audrey back in 1969 when she embarked on an affair with bad boy Ray Langton (the 60s Ryan Connor). But when she failed to convince Ray to leave his fiancee Sandra Butler (Elsie Tanner's niece), Audrey left the street. Dickie had left a week earlier.
The end is nigh for Chesney and Katy, just as it was for the Flemings. Dickie and Audrey divorced in 1970. It really is a case of history repeating...

I have zero memory of Dickie and Audrey. But then I was only 9 years old at the time.
ReplyDeleteI don't either Billy but from what I've read, they had a similar life to Ches and Katy.
ReplyDeletePlease don't split up Chesney and Katie, they are such a sweet couple...one of my favourite couples on the Street!
ReplyDeleteI remember them well. It makes me feel a million years old:( They were brought in as a couple and we didn't know them before they got together - which may be why they never really took off as characters, and were written out. But I don't think either Chesney or Katy are leaving are they?
ReplyDeleteNo as a couple I meant njblas :)
ReplyDeleteChesney is 18 going on 80 and not even an affair can make Katy interesting. It would have been far better for Chesney to have become some kind of entrepreneur, maybe setting up a dog sitting/grooming service. Marriage and a baby just show an astounding lack of ideas.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I dimly recall, the Dickie/Audrey relationship foundered over money worries and the inexperience over budgeting of teenagers who were just too young to set up house.
ReplyDeleteToday's Corrie of course has to be all about sex.
I wish some grownups wrote for Corrie.
I really did feel sad for Chesney & Katy..both crying like babies..I guess they are. Great acting on both parts. Awww..
ReplyDeleteSorry I thought the acting was dire yesterday. Neither "Katie" nor "Chesney" are strong enough to carry anything but light hearted scenes. She was the instigator of wanting a "beybey" at 16 but Chesney unfortunately has grown to be a rather odd looking young man old before his time due to responsibility foisted on him at a
ReplyDeleteyoung age. Sadly Katie is far too pretty to be stuck with him. Harsh but a fact.
Frosty you said exactly what I have been thinking since those two got together. I have always thought Katy was way out of Chesney's league. She is a very pretty girl. Chesney is boring, not very attractive and has nothing going for him a low paying job with no benefits. I really wish the writers would do something with him. I thought at one time he was supposed to be smart wasn't Cilla going to send him to Oakhill on a scholarship? Why couldn't he get some sort of apprenticeship maybe at the garage?
ReplyDeleteI've always been very disappointed in the way they have developed Chesney's character as he's grown up. I had hoped that he would be the one Corrie kid that would rise above his early start in life, and having Cilla as his mother, and make something of himself. As a boy he was sensible, sensitive and smart. Does anyone remember when he had to do the school project on reducing your carbon footprint? Being an expectant father at 16 was not how I hoped things would play out for him. He was the one I had hoped would go on to some sort of higher education. If not university, then some sort of course/trade that would tap into his potential. Even with a child, many young couples work and go to school part time. He is only 18 so it is far from too late for him to better his lot in life. Maybe this is the turning point he needs.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it when someone does decide to go to university, they move away? Amber went to London and Ryan to Glasgow. Is it secret Corrie code for getting rid of a character - at least for a while. If so, maybe Tracy could go to university. :-)
