Original Coronation Street cast member dies

Daphne Oxenford, who played one of the original Coronation Street characters Esther Hayes,  passed away on December 21st, 2012. She was aged 93.

Daphne Oxenford starred as Esther Hayes on Corrie from 1960 to 1972.

Daphne Oxenford was an actress of stage, radio and television who provided the welcoming voice on Listen with Mother. She enjoyed an acting career notable for its variety and longevity. She was in West End revue with Joyce Grenfell, one of the original cast of Coronation Street and a comic foil to Les Dawson, and she was still active into her late eighties.

  2. I always thought her character was nice, but bland. I didn't know she was the voice of 'Listen With Mother', I used to listen to that faithfully when I was a little girl. "Are you sitting comfortably?" (Christine wriggles bottom into chair to make sure) "Then I'll begin".

RIP Daphne, I liked Esther she was the streets listening ear, especially to Ken, Val, Lucille and Christine, like it has been said, would of been nice if she had made a few more guest appearances after her last in 1972. It would be nice if someone did a small article on here remembering Esther Hayes and of course Daphne Oxenford

  4. Yes someone should do an article please... afterall she is a character who to my knowledge never entered the Rovers Return, that makes her abit special!!.... I am sure Ida Barlow went in the rovers as Elsie Tanner got her drunk ! can anyone clarify???? many thanks

  5. I enjoyed her portrayal of the post office lady in To the manor born too. RIP Daphene.

  6. She never played a good part so wasn't exactly going to get a big mention unlike Jack Duckworth and Eddie Yeats, who where actually Corrie Icons. Who would remember Esther now???
