Coronation Street double episode review, Monday 7 January

Paul to Karl, 'You've got leaves and muck in your gutter.' Not what anyone wants to hear but what surely must be dealt with. What a come down for siren Sunita as she tells Karl he must deal with the problem. 'Job for today,' she chirrups, as she takes the children to school sounding very much like a primary school teacher addressing her charges. Then, when she sees later that the job has not been undertaken, she turns into a harassed mother addressing her teenager. 'You've had all day!' As Karl protests, she orders him to do it today, 'before it goes dark!' Oh dear, it seems all the romance (lust?) has vanished. Still, the need to get the job done gave air time to the wonderful Craig, a real talent, who, channeling his inner Naomi Campbell, stated that he didn't get out of bed for less than ten pounds, though seemed to settle for a fiver. Later, with Karl supine on the sofa, the ex-siren Sunita attacks again, this time with a dishcloth to the face. As Karl explains his philosophy on life, that is to delegate, he tells the enraged Sunita that that is what bosses do. 'And what are you the boss of?, she asks, then provides a possible answer herself, 'Lying down?' So much snarkiness will surely finish them off.

Poor Nick. What a bad way he is in. Peter was very successful in baiting Nick. He chose his words well. 'She'll always want me.' And there's more, as he tells Nick he'll always be scrabbling around in the dirt for his leftovers. It was satisfying to see Peter on the floor after Nick hit him and then threw Peter's words back at him. 'Who's scrabbling on the floor now?' That said, Peter got a good one back at Nick when he said, 'Sling your smarmy hook!'

Leanne tried her best to persuade Nick that she loves him, but understandably he remains unconvinced. Many viewers will hope that Leanne does not follow through her plan to leave Weatherfield. Jane Danson clocked up some fine acting tonight and the pathos in her words, 'I've broken him, mum. I've broken him,' was thoroughly convincing.

So, finally, the plot begins to come clear as Lewis pays his mate of Tuscan hotel fame the readies for his part in the impending downfall of Gail, who claims not to have 'worry lines' but 'worry canyons' and due to her anxieties over her son is told that she is 'pecking at her sandwich like a little sparrow'. We hear from the Tuscan hotel mate, who takes four sugars in his tea and needs to learn some manners, that Gail is younger than the ones Lewis has conned in the past, which seems to imply that there have been others besides Audrey and Penny. Lewis says of Gail that, 'She pretty much ruined my life, so I'm going to ruin hers.' All this is thrillingly sinister and having heard all this in Roy's Rolls, the note that Lewis writes when Audrey calls at Gail's, ostensibly for Nick but stating, 'I love you,' is brilliantly executed. I wonder if Dionne Warwick's 'Heartbreaker' playing in The Rovers was deliberately chosen for Nick and Gail?

  1. During the Lewis and accomplice scene at Roy's, Anna is within hearing distance to take the tea order but strangely deaf to the plotting against Gail. We see that in the Rovers too where normal conversations are only overheard if it suits the plot.

  2. 1994 : First pre-watershed lesbian kiss (on Brookside), and it causes a hell of a fuss.

2013 : Lesbian kissing again, but nobody (except Kevin) bats an eyelid.

We've come a long way in accepting differing sexual orientations. Thank goodness.

  3. Oh, Gail, stop meddling.

Oh, Lewis, she didn't ruin your life. Stop being such a panto villain.

Oh, Kirsty, you are such a controlling B.

Oh, Karl and Sunita, just leave already. You're ruined beyond redemption.

Oh, David, when did you become such a mensch? I don't do cleaning, I leave that to the lovely Gail, good one.

  4. Not surprised the bloom is off the rose for Karl and Sunita. I think she saw him as a way out of a boring marriage, while for him she was just a bit of fun that blew up in his face. I can't imagine what they're living on -- Dev's largesse?

  5. Sounds like Kevin has got his nose out of joint.Your too old Kevin get a life and let Sophie be she's already told you to butt out but it's a soap and it wont go smoothly. Can see Anna having a quiet word with Gail and Audrey if only Audrey Gail will think her mother is trying to cause trouble. and the two plotting to get Lewis sorted and sent out of town..

  6. Frosty the Snowman8 January 2013 at 08:32

Frosty is wondering why on a dry fine day water was cascading from the Alahan's gutters? Do they have Niagra falls up there?. Sooo bored with Sunita and Karl already, who cares about either of them, when is she leaving does anyone know?

  7. Watch the episode again, Frosty. It was raining several times during the day and a blocked gutter continues to spill over, after the rain has stopped, because it's blocked!

  8. Where did the so called leaves come from that blocked the drain? Not a tree on the street!

  9. There a shot of Eva in puffed out hair like a wig and way too much make up. Is Eva really a drag queen? Is that the next explosive storyline? Stella was so guilty for leaving Leanne that when she had a baby boy she pretended it was a girl. Now the truth comes out (so to speak), Leanne has a half-brother not a sister. Will it send shock waves through the street? Will a nation be gripped?

  10. Isn't there one tree in front of Audrey's salon, shading Maxine's bench? It sure must have a lot of leaves! There may be a couple in Sally's back garden too. Last time there was a problem with gutters and downspouts, wasn't it supposed to be moss growing in the gutter that was to blame?
I've always thought it must be depressing to live on a street with so little sign of nature anywhere. Maybe on the new outdoor set they can plant a few trees, since the street is supposed to be wider.

  11. Well, the bloom is off the tan isn't it - Peter is back to his vile, despicable self. I only wish Nick had gotten in a few more punches. Can Leanne really still love this rat of a man, who with the sudden appearance of Carla denies ever saying to Leanne they should try again - hope not. Love to see Leanne and Nick together happy and Carla and Peter miserable.

  12. "Peter was very successful in baiting Nick. He chose his words well. 'She'll always want me.' And there's more, as he tells Nick he'll always be scrabbling around in the dirt for his leftovers..."

The demise of Calirornia Pete/Cool Hand Luke's reasonable and understanding persona means his new personality lasted less than a month then.

So, a 'Good boy' choccy biccy to all those who saw through the new laid back California Pete and that he was as false as a £5 Rollex at car bootsale.

  13. So, it's the final ruination of the Lewis character; he's doing all this out of spite? Pffttt!!!Another character metamorphising into someone else, mid sentence.
