Top 60 Corrie Characters - No. 14

14. Audrey Roberts 1979-1982, 1984- (99 votes)

Crimper Audrey first appeared for daughter Gail and fiancĂ© Brian’s engagement party and immediately set her sights on Len Fairclough, only for his wife Rita to warn her off. Audrey and Gail’s relationship was initially frosty due to Audrey’s tendency to be flighty and not be there for Gail. She would pop in and out of Gail’s life until she found stability with grocer Alf Roberts whom she married in 1985. Alf and Audrey would become one of Corrie’s best loved couples. Although a floozy hairdresser, Audrey saw herself of a higher status due to her being married to a councillor and when Alf was elected mayor in 1994, she was in her element as mayoress but was miffed when Alf sacked her and appointed Betty Turpin in her place. Alf and Audrey were married until Alf’s death in 1999 and since then she’s had many gentlemen friends but none have matched up to her ‘Alfeh’. Among the men she’s been involved with are Fred Elliott, Archie Shuttleworth, Keith Appleyard, Bill Webster, Lewis Archer and Marc Selby. In 2002, she fell victim to son in law Richard Hillman’s clutches who convinced her she was going senile in a bid to get her inheritance and nearly killed her by setting her house on fire. Audrey’s attempts to convince everybody of Richard’s evil deeds fell on deaf ears but when she was proved right, the residents had to accept they were wrong. Audrey’s best friend for many years was Alma Baldwin and when Alma was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2001, Audrey was her rock during those difficult months. Audrey was devastated when Alma died a few months later at her house. Since Alf’s death, Audrey has become a much respected member of the community and owns her own salon on the street and has become the ultimate matriarch of the Platt family, despite numerous clashes with Gail and her grandchildren.

  2. I thought her heart attack was utterly convincing. One of the show's best actresses, always absolutely real.
