13. Bet
Lynch 1966, 1970-1995, 2002-2003 (100 votes)
She
is not only the most famous barmaid of the Rovers Return, but in British soap
history. Hired by Billy Walker in 1970, blonde bombshell Bet served behind the
bar for 25 years – 10 of those years as landlady. Following the footsteps of
Elsie Tanner, she became the Street’s siren and she had 15 men over the years
that include Len Fairclough, Mike Baldwin and Jack Duckworth. Bet is also
remembered for her witty banter with the customers and with fellow staff Betty
Turpin and Fred Gee and boss Annie Walker. After seventeen years of being
single, she married bumbling entertainment agent Alec Gilroy. They became
popular for their sarcastic banter. Their marriage lasted until 1992 and ended when
Bet refused to go to Southampton with Alec. Bet continued behind the bar until
she met financial difficulties in 1995. When old pal Rita refused to lend her
money, she left the Rovers and the cobbles under a dark cloud. She made a brief
comeback in 2002 for Betty’s retirement party (Bet was now living in Brighton)
and then in 2003 when she was involved in a storyline with Jim and Liz McDonald
in Blackpool and had a whirlwind romance with brewery boss Cecil Newton. But
before they were due to marry, Cecil died of a heart attack. Bet then returned
to Brighton accompanied by Liz.
Should
blonde and busty barmaid Bet be at 13? Should she be in the top 10? Were you a

Theres only a handful of people who in my opinion have left a huge void when they left and deserve to be in the top 10. Bet Lynch, Hilda Ogden, Liz McDonald, Ena Sharples, Mavis Riley, Blanche Hunt
ReplyDeleteI agree with all but Liz, too early to say. This poll is crazy. Its as if the first 35 years didnt exist. Is Graeme higher than Bet?!! What a load of tosh. - Micky
