Kym Marsh has signed a three year contract to stay on at Coronation Street, says the Daily Star Sunday. They also report the contract is worth half a million quid.
Our old friend, the ITV "source" told the Daily Star Sunday: “Kym is a very talented actress and singer. The
scriptwriters have come up with some pretty explosive stuff for her and
wanted her signed up for three years so it could all play out. The
majority of the cast are either on six-month or one-year contracts.
They only ever give these types of deals out when they really want to
keep someone. There
are some major storylines coming up for her and people are going to see
a completely different side to Michelle in the months to come.”
If rumours are true, Michelle Connor's on-screen son Ryan will be returning to Corrie and he sets Sophie Webster on the way to be a junkie.
So, what do you think about three more years of Kym Marsh as Michelle on Corrie? I took a long time to warm to her on the cobbles, I'll readily admit. But I've grown to admire her character, she's got a bit of oomph about her in the way that, say, Maria can only ever dream about. And as Michelle is no longer my least favourite character any more as that award goes firmly to St. Ella, I don't mind her staying on the Street at all. Kym's performance as a young Elsie Tanner in the Street of Dreams musical also gets a thumbs up in all the reviews I've read of the show. But never mind me, what do you think?

Now I know the powers that be really have lost the plot. Here we have a pointless exhausted and not particuarly popular or likeable character - if you dont believe me - read the web boards - that has come to the end of the road as their character and what do they do - the same as with Kate Ford - yes they renew their contract for THREE YEARS - mad mad mad.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand Kym Marsh. She never seems to be out of the tabloids, so I will take this story with a truckload of salt. But if it is true, then the lunatics must have taken over the Coronation Street asylum. The character has made no impact on me at all and I hardly notice whether she is in it. Give Lisa George or Paula Lane a three year contract! The casting decisions are becoming more stupid than the stories.
ReplyDeleteI like Michelle, she was boring behind the bar, but she really works well in Underworld, working with Carla, she just fits in there perfectly.
ReplyDeleteIf they have a three year plan hopefully she will at least have something to do. Whats the betting though it involves her falling for a man who turns out to be a baddn and has an 'explosive' finale?- Micky
ReplyDeleteI like Michelle. I wonder if it's got anything to do with Carla's brother turning up. Maybe he will get involved with Michelle.
ReplyDeleteI used to think the actress that played Maria was a waste of space and that the character was pointless. However, she was in a couple of episodes where she'd been given either funny or dramatic things to say and she wasn't bad. The same could apply to Kym Marsh/Michelle. Give her a decent script and more direction - to me, she's more of a singer than an actor - and she could be OK. It's really all down to the writing. Relying on personalities to keep Corrie afloat is one of the reasons it's struggling at the moment.
ReplyDeleteJust another example of Collinson's favouritism for an actress that is well past her sell buy date, hopefully when he is canned she will go as well.
ReplyDeleteI like Michelle with Carla and was pleasantly surprised how well she fits in at Underworld (do wish she'd make a few more friends), but she's nothing to write home about. Her other relationships makes her tedious, including Ryan.
ReplyDeleteAnother Street Kid failure? If Ryan comes back as a junkie who drags Sophie down with him, the writing team deserves to be fired. Didn't like Ryan, but he had a dream and left home to pursue it. They should be able to rise to the challenge of finding good stories for the struggles of one educated young character starting a career. There's a another story there, the one where Sophie picks herself up and gets back to college before it's too late. Addiction, crime, despair, yawn.
I do agree with that, let Ryan pass University, I'm disappointed they pulled Amber out to be a plot device.
ReplyDeleteThree Years? Sound very suss to me. I know a select few have had two year contracts... but 3?? The half million quid sounds crap too.
ReplyDeleteA paycheck like that would put her on a par with the Corrie elders.
Why on earth would Corrie's bosses (which are NOT just Phil Collinson tie themselves down to Marsh, when some of them won't even be there in three years time?
I suspect exaggerated PR guff from someone, blown out of proportion by the Star.
I'm hoping, anyway, because if it's true, It's beyond stupid.
I'm thinking it's PR guff too Annie. Maybe she's been signed up for 1 year but this "corrie source" has told the paper "but they want her for 3" or something. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteReally? Was she even gone somewhere? I don't think anyone even missed her one tad.
ReplyDeleteI suppose what with her son coming back from Uni to deal drugs on Coronation Street will turn into a 3 year long boring drawn out affair. Blech..not watching - sorry.
I suppose this means that Ryan will OD and we have another death on Corrie in the coming months.
ReplyDeleteBoring, bland, insipid, tedious, forgettable character. Mediocre actress.
ReplyDeleteAnd she's one of the reasons I watch the programme only intermittently these days (and not at all for the last three months.
And here was me looking in here and thinking I might catch another episode soon in case things had improved. Seems not.
