When Stella first arrived on Coronation Street, I gave her the benefit of the doubt, there were a lot of fans up in arms about her, a southerner playing a northerner, something that Tony Warren was against when he created the show.
As time went on she became a little more accepted. Then people started to dislike her for another reason, she started constantly inviting people "into the back room", to talk them through their problems.
The problem with these scenes is they feel terribly forced, I can see that Corrie are trying to make us like her, but they're trying too hard, Stella doesn't need to be some sort of guardian angel for the street, that is not what makes a good Coronation Street landlady. Look at Annie Walker, she had faults, she had delusions of grandeur. Look at Liz McDonald, she had dozens of faults, but these are what made her likeable.
If Corrie want to make us like Stella, they need to tone down on the guardian angel angle, in last night's episode, she was shoehorned into Eileen's storyline for no apparent reason. A better character to use for those scenes would have been Steve McDonald, Eileen's old friend, not the landlady of the local pub.
It seems there is light ahead though, with the impending arrival of Gloria Price, will we finally start seeing cracks in Stella's heavenly armour? Personally, ever since it was announced Sue Johnston would be joining Corrie, I've thought that she would have been the perfect choice for a landlady at the Rovers.

Why must they put her in every scene! 'If you need anything, just ask' AAAAAAH!!! Couldn't Julie, Beth, Hayley or Rita be there instead of her!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I was actually thinking it was getting better last night until they pushed Stella into that scene for no apparent reason. She has no links with Eileen or her situation that I could fathom. Forcing her on us at every opportunity won't make me like her Collinson! It feels like she's in every scene, while other characters (like the Croppers or Windasses) barely get a look in. Rant over!
ReplyDeleteThis is getting absolutely stupid the way St Ella is shoved into every flaming scene - N E P O T I S M. Newsflash Collinson - its making us ridicule and dislike her! And why wasnt Eileen cautoned or at least interviewed by the police, she had a duty of care to Lesley not just bogging off to Roys Rolls for tea and cakes - arrghhhh.
ReplyDeleteWell she's Collinson's fair haired girl so of course he will push her ahead of characters that have been in the show since the big bang.
ReplyDeleteHe is not doing the show any favours with his constant favouritism and unbelievable story lines, the loan shark and Paul with his "I take my vows very seriously" and then doing everything he can to keep Eileen in bed with him.
I don't understand why he is still in charge of the show, the sooner he's gone the better.
I agree with all comments. I groaned out loud when Stella appeared. And Marcus saying something like: 'You were marvellous'... She gave Eileen a brandy! Well, what else would a pub landlady do? I've always thought a kind of Annie Walker snobbishness would have made for some comedy, trying to pair her daughters off with men of social standing. She's not a guardian angel, she's an ambulance chaser.
ReplyDeleteI think Collinson's reign is starting to drag too, at first I liked him because the street finally started interacting with each other (In Kim Crowther's reign, characters existed in their own bubbles) but its getting to the point where he's starting to have favourite characters too.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, the whole Lesley tragedy had to have Stella right in the middle of it. Lets take Eileen to the Rovers and throw a large snifter of brandy into her. Does Eileen even remotely know Stella? Why didn't they go to Jason's flat? Why didn't Jason text Paul to get his ass back home as soon as he saw his mum had been smacked about.
ReplyDeleteCheese on toast..mmm...gives it a whole new meaning now.
How long before she ends up in hospital again? after all it must've been a week since the hospital set was last used...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I read somewhere that Corrie's actors are paid according to how many scene's or storylines they have. If this is true then Michelle Collins must have earned enough to take early retirement since being in the show...... well lets hope anyway :)
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud when Stella was walking down the street RIGHT at that moment! Im surprised the rovers is still in business as she never seems to do a full shift. Shes always out and about sticking her nose in other peoples business with 'kindness'. - Micky
ReplyDeleteIt makes me laugh how she is suddenly everyone's best friend and confidante.
ReplyDeleteIf she spent less time sticking her beak in to everyone else's business and more time taking a look at what's going on under her own roof she might learn a thing or two...
