Sir Jacobi will appear as a drinker in the background of a scene at the Rovers Return. Corrie production staff confirmed his fleeting appearance yesterday.
“We have tried for years to try and sort out a role in the show for Sir Derek but we have never quite managed it,” said a Corrie spokesman. “We are as big a fan of his work as he is of ours. He is an Equity member, so there was no problem getting him on set. It is highly unlikely viewers would spot him but we hope it made his day.”

Maybe a love interest for Emily? Poor Em ... haven't done anything with her character for ages.
ReplyDeleteWhy does a great actor like this have to be in the background. Surely they could write in a cameo for him, a great opportunity!
ReplyDeleteWell if only just as an extra in the background - okay-ish (with reservations see below).
ReplyDeleteI don't care that he's a great actor (he is, by the way) but it puts Corrie in danger of becoming a parody of itself. The 'spell' was broken recently every time The Man from Uncle appeared centre stage. The action stopped as you watched Napoleon Solo and his whistling dentures.
What next, Elvis serving at the counter of the old fish and chip shop?
Not a week goes by that some celeb airs their wish for a 'quickie' part on Corrie. The natural life-flow of Corrie is side-tracked to accomodate and slot these celebs in to unconvincing scenario's, just so they can fulfill a lifetime's fantasy.
One or two over several years is okay - but it's turning into a factory line for celebs to show the clout they have with the Granada bigwigs!
Is that what life on the street of Corrie is to become - a parody of a parody?
Agree Danny-K - almost like the voice overs for adverts years ago, the ac-tors turned up their noses, now its become de rigur, like appearing in Corrie. I wonder what fee Robert Vaughan commanded for the very forgettable role of Whistling Milton?
ReplyDeleteI agree Emily should have a love interest. she was leaving the hair salon to meet someone for lunch one day ( a male acquantance ) and I thouht they would build on it . She is a marvel and one of the most sane characters. Give her a love interest, Rita's had so many finally she's become Mrs. T, 40 years, now Emily's turn.
