I just realised there has been no reference to Rita's 80th birthday. Her birthday was on the 25th of February, and I find it odd there was no mention whatsoever. Coronation Street has been very good to mention other milestone birthdays like Emily, Jack, Gail, Audrey, Betty, Ken and Norris - but not Rita! And why make a fuss about Norris' birthday this week when he was only 72 compared to Rita's 80th? And with her being such an integral part of the community and well liked, you'd think Emily, Dennis, Norris and Tina would've planned something! A party at the Rovers possibly? Or maybe Barbara Knox didn't want to broadcast her age, because she wasn't happy when they did a storyline about her 70th birthday in 2002!
Do you remember when Rita, Emily, Betty and Blanche went for a country drive to celebrate? And they were held at gunpoint but heroine Rita easily overpowered him and he was arrested? And when they appeared in the Weatherfield Gazette as 'grannies', they attacked the journalist as well with their handbags - and appeared on the front page again for attacking the reporter!
So, what do you think? Should Corrie have mentioned summat about Rita's milestone birthday? After all, you'd think she deserved a party and it would've been a great chance to show old photographs of her and reminisce.

When they haul her away to the brig for killing Frank Foster, the booking sergeant will note wryly that she just had a birthday.
ReplyDeleteno, I think Rita's age should be as elusive as her real hair colour.
ReplyDeletewell spotted CSC but I think I might have to agree with Barrie T above ;-)
ReplyDeleteA mention would have been nice but I understand if Barbara Knox didn't want Rita's 80th celebrated. Can't believe Rita is in her eighties though!
ReplyDeleteYes bit unusual to totally forget Rita's 80th. In a 1976 episode Rita had her birthday on 25 Feb which is correct but I think she mentioned it was her 43rd birthday which would make her born in 1933 but later scripts point to her being born in 1932 hence turning 70 in Feb 2002.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they didn't want to draw attention to the age gap between her and Dennis.
ReplyDeletePRobably that, Humpty but at that age, 10 years isn't really a big deal. I reckon it came from Ms. Knox
ReplyDeleteWho cares how old she is, Rita is still a fine looking woman. Lets get more stories with her in them, instead of the teriminally tiresome Havers and Steve and Tracy borefest.
ReplyDeleteIt's Barbara Knox's/Ritas's decision. I am of the opinion that age is just a number for other people to hang their own prejudices on anyway. Do you celebrate a birthday or the fact that you made it that far! :)
ReplyDeleteI think we should all just have a 'Me' day instead and just celebrate being who we are!
