There's a wonderful article in The Guardian, written by Paul Flynn, in response to the online diarrhoea that was Brian Sewell's post in the Daily Mail today.

The article in the Daily Mail was a load of rubbish. It is, in my opinion, the sign of a healthy society that fully integrates lgbt people in all it's aspects.
ReplyDeleteWell said Paul Flynn!
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in Manchester I had many lgbt friends, just because there was a happy and thriving Manchester lgbt culture and acceptance of all people. True, some people will always be homophobic/racist (yes, even in Manchester!) but that's life. Canal Street, though the centre of the gay scene, is still a great, happy, threat-free place for a night out whatever your orientation.
But in comparison having moved away from Manchester altogether there are, to my knowledge, no lgbt people in the area - and not because of any prejudices, there just is no lgbt community at all that I am aware of.
And I guess many places in the UK may be the same, so yes, in comparison to many areas Manchester/Corrie has a high lgbt head count; it may seem too high to some people. But Corrie is just reflecting the fantastic diversity of Manchester/Salford life and long may it continue to do so.
What about East Enders??
ReplyDeleteBrian Sewell's post was atrocious, expressing a total intolerance of homosexuality featuring on Corrie for no good reason except that it's only started to be explored over the past decade or so. There are plenty of straight characters, and for the most part I find the gay characters on Coronation Street interesting and they add to the diversity of the show. I also stumbled across the article from The Guardian and it was a well-written, thought-provoking, insightful piece.
ReplyDeleteIt should be noted that Brian Sewell considers himself to be a bisexual man who despises his "homosexual urges" and considers them a "failing". That's a nice little self-loathing filter to view the world through.
