There's a Coronation Street spoiler in today's Sun that says Barlow's Bookies will be flattened in Coronation Street after Carla Connor drives her car into the building in a jealous rage.
Carla (Alison King) has been in love with Peter Barlow since he started helping her with her drink problem. But ex-alcoholic Peter simply sees her as a pal and repeatedly knocks her back in favour of his wife Leanne.Shunned Carla ends up drunkenly crashing her car into his business.
Shades of Mad Meya crashing her car into Div's. I suppose it was about 10 year ago though, time for a recycling of stories. I am surprised the Bookies gets insurance, burnt down by Peter in a drunken stupor, and squashed by the tram, now its to be flattened again -hm?
ReplyDeleteThe bookie was never squashed by the tram.. Btw, it's Maya and Dev.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it about time Carla got the message that Peter is not prepared to offer her anything more than friendship/mentoring? He has been very consistent in making that clear to her, from day one - and although he doesn't feel able to turn his back on her when she asks for help, he is often pretty grudging about it, more and more so as her neediness causes problems for him. I know the papers and whatnot like to refer to them as having some kind of unresolved romance, but I've never seen any romance between them (although can see how their connection could be taken that way if the writers wanted to) - it has always been clear to me that Peter sees Carla as a friend and nothing more; he enjoys her company, but that's as far as it goes. He's drawn a very definite line in his head between Leanne and every other woman out there, and feels that as long as everyone knows where they stand, there is no harm in being friends with Carla. But she is such a mess at the moment, she swings back and fore between accepting that and wanting more.
ReplyDeleteHopefully if Carla hits rock bottom through all this, it will be the start of her beginning to pick herself up once more so she can finally move forward with her life.
...hang on. When is this supposed to happen? Carla lost her licence at the end of November, so she shouldn't be driving again before then...unless she really is trying to self-destruct completely by driving while banned as well as while drunk!
ReplyDeleteI wish they would lay off this
ReplyDeleteCarla/Peter business, as Llewla says, he has never shown her a bit of encouragement and someone with Carla's looks wouldnt be so short of male attention that she would need to keep not taking no for an answer from the tattooed bookie. I find it really irritating somehow.
Me too Blackie.
ReplyDeleteWell, a new interview suggests that Peter is pretty jealous when he sees Carla with Frank, so it's incorrect to assume all this is one-sided...
ReplyDeleteIt has been fairly one-sided up till now - that may change in the future, but I can only judge based on what's been seen on-screen so far!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Leanne preggie or does she have a convenient miscarriage and blames Peter for all her woes thus throwing him into the arms of Carla. Wait a minute...this has a familiar ring .. where has this story been done before - oh yes...Coronation Street! They must have a recycling department where old stories go to die for about 10 years and then are reused with new characters.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely like milking the idea that strong/attractive women must be obsessed with men they can't have. I understand they are likely trying to use this flaw to give Carla vulnerability for perhaps likeability but it's become ridiculous particularly when you consider her next stop is violent, control-freak, psycho Frank. Why can't there be a strong woman who isn't flattened by her heart?
ReplyDeleteWhat baffles me is why Peter doesn't suggest strongly to Carla that she go to some AA meetings and get herself another sponsor. I'm assuming that the hilarious scenes where Blanche and the whole Barlow family went to a meeting to support Peter was an AA meeting? He should know better than to simply fob Carla off without offering other suggestions, especially when she's stressed out and tempted to drink again. (Not that she's ever stopped.)
ReplyDeleteI also think Peter is not really over any feelings he may have for her. He always was tempted, from the look on his face. Seems to me there are better ways to play this story out without her chasing him and crashing.
Peter has been strongly suggesting to Carla that she find herself a support group. If you watch their scenes together back in October/November when he was actively mentoring her, just about every single conversation they had circled back around to him trying to persuade her to get proper help so that he could step back without feeling responsible for her. She refused at first because she was too ashamed - and then later refused because she liked having him at her beck and call and wanted to keep him tied to her. It is all very messy now.
ReplyDeleteMay I suggest that when describing Peter the term "recovering alcholic" be used rather than "ex-alcholic" as the daughter of a "recovering alcholic" I know that once someone has this disease they always have it. Just one drink away.
ReplyDeletei sort of like the peter-carla thing maybe coz im a carla fan but crashing into the bookies? not sure about that one
ReplyDeleteI don't mind hearing about the bookies, but for the sake of non - gamblers, I don't think gambling should be allowed on Corrie. This can give influence to many people, and there is too much gambling on TV to start with. This can be said with The Kabin as they sell cigarettes and can influence non - smokers. It's also bad enough booze shown in the Rovers, but obviously, I am not asking for that to be removed, but I wish the name of drinks wasn't mentioned like they do. In other words, people can use this pub without us hearing them ask for it. Maybe the camera should show people drinking at the tables etc AFTER they have placed their order without the need of asking for their drinks in front of viewers.
