Carla Connor gets beaten up by Frank

How low is Coronation Street going to sink? It's with a heavy heart that I found this Corie spoiler from The People (via Digital Spy) today that says Carla Connor is going to get beaten up by Frank Foster.

Carla will be subjected to a physical and sexual assault by Frank after he suspects she is cheating on him with Peter Barlow. The plot will be a prominent storyline over the summer and air after the 9pm watershed during a week of special episodes. Groan.

Tracy Barlow will offer to give Frank a positive character reference in court, while Peter's marriage to Leanne suffers when details of his friendship with Carla come out.

Oh well, that's a nice and cheerful storyline to look forward to then, it's just like Corrie should be and builds on its foundation and history. NOT!

This fan reckons it's time for Phil Collinson to go.

  1. I cannot stand up for Corrie anymore, I do not like the route the show is going down, I was alright with the show before this spoiler, but this is worrying, Corrie need to take a serious look at their production team.

  2. If you read back through the blog you will see that there are lots of different writers for the blog and there has been lots of positive opinions. Corrie does seem to be getting over sensationalized lately and it does wear some of us long time watchers down. If you love corrie, post more positive comments instead of letting the negativity take over!

  3. I'm with you, Flaming Nora. We just got through 2 ridiculous crime stories, Stape the bumbling murderer, and the selling of Maxie 123, and now have to suffer another? Marketing 101, it costs less to retain an existing customer than to attract a new one. With these over the top stories, TPTB, you're alienating your fanbase. I don't need another Becky tantrum, I want to see Gail fall into unemployment blues and pick herself up. Or something like that.

  6. On second thoughts, I think Alison King will pull off these scenes brilliantly, I only hope we have some really humourous scenes to counteract what will be very harrowing scenes

  7. this sounds awful. It's now like a sub-eastenders. if this turns out to be true i dont know if i can watch.

  8. It's kind of a come-uppance for the way that Carla treated Maria, but is it a proportionate punishment for Carla to suffer a worse attack than Maria? Is this really what fans want to see?

The idea that perjurer and convicted murderer Tracy could provide a character reference for anyone is hysterically funny. That's real comedy.

Quote from the article: "The producers ... know that this storyline will distress people." Is that the intention?

  9. This plot has been developing for months, we all brushed off Frank's advances as "a drunked fumble" - we were wrong. Quite a good trick to pull on the audiences as all too often these claims are laughed at, only for the attacker to later offend again.

Alison and Andrew will no doubt be brilliant in this storyline, I just pray the 9pm move is for 'Pop Star To Operastar finals' or something like that - and not so they can show more graphic scenes. The Corrie audience don't want to see more graphic scenes.

  10. I didn't brush off Frank's "advances" as a drunken fumble. No wonder so many rapists walk free.

  11. If the rumours about Stella and Leanne are true, Leanne's certainly going to have a busy summer - juggling newfound mum and marital strife.

This storyline certainly sounds dark and it does get wearying to have a lot of dark, depressing storylines in rapid succession, but it's been on the cards for a long time now that Frank would do something like this and I don't doubt that the actors will do a great job with such meaty material.

  12. Carla gets sexually abused and beaten up..I wish they'd turn that storyline around because it sure isn't in Carla's character to take crap from anyone but, like I said..its sensational storylines that bring in the viewers. I for one won't be watching, and victims and survivors of domestic violence should really voice their opionions about this pathetic ratings grab. Wasn't Rita beaten up by her boyfriend at the time?.....I suppose the writers think their audience has mass amnesia or summat so they can just rehash the old stories with new characters. YAWN

  13. Do not like.

There's altogether too much violence in Corrie as it is. Leave the wifebeating, and those who enjoy that, to EastEnders.

  14. I don't like the sound of this at all, and I agree with Nora that PC should go. He did an excellent job with tram week, but since then the quality has been hit and miss, with too much violence and sensationalism.

If hope this spoiler is not true, I just don't think this is what Corrie should be about. I know that soaps should be realistic, and there is a way to portray these storylines, but in full graphic violence, post watershed is not what I want to see.

I always felt Maria's assault was serious, and Carla fully supported her to start with. So the idea that she would start a relationship with Frank is silly. Carla's supposed to be smart, and given her experiences with Tony, she wouldn't go there. I find Carla to be a thoroughly unlikeable character, so maybe TPTB want us to see her vulnerable side and feel sympathy for her. But there are so many other plots they could have chosen for this, such as her alcoholism etc.

As Annie said, leave the violence to Eastenders.

  15. Why can't Peter and Leanne be happy for five minutes? Why not have both Peter and Leanne support Carla in her time of need and then have Peter fight with Tracy over her testimony? Barlow vs Barlow would be different at least and it would explore what has been a complex but actually very loving relationship. It would be interesting to watch Tracy's desire for social climbing conflict with her very strong loyalty(one of her most redeeming qualities I think) to Peter. Like I said if nothing else it would be different.

  16. I am very glad Maria is to be vindicated. If Tracy does testify in Court and ends up getting charged with perverting the course of justice, I would be a very happy bunny.

I hope the 9pm timings do not become a regular thing. Corrie has always been a pre watershed, family show.

I like this suggestion - solid and character-based rather than sensationalist. It is such a shame to think that we have barely seen Peter and Leanne since their reunion, and then no sooner will they be back on our screens than they'll be experiencing marital disharmony again. Wouldn't it be good if we were allowed to see characters while they are happy and on an even keel, as well as when they are having difficulties?

  18. My reaction was similar to Yoork...
Seriously? I would think that having Tracy as a character reference would count as a strike against anyone..
    Rebecca in TO..

  19. I know Corrie seems to be going a little overboard with the sensationalism lately, but i actually am not opposed to this storyline. Something's been brewing with Frank ever since the incident with Maria, and although it sounds very extreme I'm a huge fan of Alison King am looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the belief that all this over-dramatic stuff is neccessary to pull in viewers.
