Cut-Throat World of Coiffure: Thu Mar 10, 2011 Corrie Episode Review

Mar-10-2011

Written by Jan McVerry, directed by Tony Prescott

Graeme’s attitude has gone from fab to drab since he’s been told by his girlfriend that he’ll be married off to her friend Xin to stay in the country.  Xin, on the other hand isMar-10-2011-Tina-shocked excited and wonders what the neighbours have thought of he and Tina splitting up.  I guess they hadn’t thought about that.  Who will believe that Graeme and Xin are getting married when he and Tina are still together?  Queue terrible staged break-up scene.  In the Rovers later, we are front-seat to a massively fake row between Graeme and Tina.  Story has it that Graeme has cheated on Tina with Xin and Tina has found out about it and it’s over between them.  It’s all fun and phony games until Graeme blurts out “at least she [Xin] doesn’t go on about her dead dad!!!”  Uh-oh.  Tina is NOT happy now, for reals. The fakest part about the fight was that stupid look if glee and surprise coming from Xin’s face.  Could this storyline get worse?  Yes, me thinks it can and will.

Audrey is blaming Claudia for stealing her regular clients at the salon.  I wouldn’t worry so much about the grey-hairs since when David Mar-10-2011-david-kylie takes over the salon, me thinks the clientele will be markedly different.  Gail stupidly thinks that Claud is Aud’s friend.  Audrey reminds her that in the “cut-throat world of coiffure, there are no friends.”  Cut-throat world of coiffure?  What is this, Sweeny Todd?!  Kylie has new plans for the design of the salon and David suggest she try a “mood board.”  He then tells Kylie to take a rain check before his Gran changes her mind about signing over the salon and kicks her out.  Kylie later finds out that Tina and David used to be an item and doesn’t seem happy to know that since Tina is newly single.  Joy to Kylie (and Gail) because she’s found a cancellation down at the registry office and as of the 8th of April, she officially will be Mrs. Kylie Platt.  Mar-10-2011-Sally-hair

Sally swans past the garage to show Kev her new haircut that Jeff treated her to.  That wasn’t intentional, was it?  Never.  Kevin takes this opportunity to let her know that Lloyd and Cheryl have put an offer in on their house and he’s accepted.  Kevin got a little satisfaction out of making his wife and child homeless it would seem.  Sally starts to look in the classifieds for a two bed place that isn’t down crack alley.

Sophie hears the news of her house being sold from Anna in Dev’s shop.  She’s even more depressed now.  When Sian gets on her again about ruining her potential by not going to school, but wasting away in a corner shop with her misery Sophie is notably peeved. Sophie lets Sian know that she’s been kicked out of college anyhow.  Sophie tells Sian that she wants the two of them to live together, but Sian is smart and sees the error of this Mar-10-2011-sian-sophie idea and how unrealistic it is.  When Sian leaves, Sophie logs onto a social networking site and sees that on Sian’s profile there are photos of her and this “new girl” Chloe from Sian’s trip and immediately thinks that Sian is cheating on her.

At the Kabin – the Kabin again, yes.  Goodbye Norris’s News.  Norris has taken the liberty of changing The Kabin back to The Kabin and the sign outside to match.  Rita seems satisfied with this change but she’s still unhappy with Norris and Mary mostly.  Mary, on the contrary, isn’t happy at all with this change.  Even after Rita says that Norris will reimburse her for all she’s spent on the sign, that’s besides the point for Scary-control-freak-Mary.  Later, Tina gives Rita a chest full of items that she and Graeme managed to salvage from the wreckage of her flat.  There are some priceless memorabilia that Rita is delighted to see.  Mar-10-2011-fiz

After Graeme and Tina had their “break up” Rita has taken Tina into her flat again. Rita figures Tina is doing her a favour by staying with her so that she doesn’t have to spend her first nights alone in the new flat.

At the hospital, the doctor thinks that baby Hope is ready to go off monitors.  Fiz is shocked at this and even more so when the doctor tells her that Faye should be ready to come home tomorrow.  Fiz panics but the doctor assures her that they wouldn’t risk Faye going home if they thought she couldn’t cope.  Fiz can’t believe that Faye will be home before her daddy.  Ha-ha, oh she’ll be twelve before daddy comes home.  Fiz is going crazy cleaning up the house preparing for Hope’s arrival.  Fiz promises Chesney that she won’t dig into Joy Fishwick’s money to buy things for Hope that she needs.

HIGHLIGHTS

- I’m really liking the way David assertively talks to Kylie, “take a rain check.”  Yeah…take a rain check Kylie.

- What a nice, nice touch how Tina and Graeme saved Rita’s items from the rouble.  This is the kind of Corrie I love.

- Loving Sally’s new pixie-cut hairstyle!!!  Even better that she didn’t get it done at Audrey’s!

- Norris to Mary: “Oh Mary, you must have other passions or dreams.”  Mary: “Nonsense!” Ha-ha!

LOWLIGHTS`

- I thought the Tina and Graeme staged breakup was terribly fake seeming - ‘cept for the part of course where Graeme needles her about “complaining about her dead dad.” I suppose it’s hard though for actors to “act acting.”

- Lloyd and Cheryl put an offer in on the Webster’s house?  Where on earth did Lloyd get the cash to do that?  I thought he was massively in debt thanks to his rubbish business partner

- I agree with Rita, when DID Mary become the operations manager of The Kabin?  More to the point, when did Mary become bezzie mates with Norris again?  She DID try to kidnap him, after all.  Has EVERYONE forgotten the siege in Bronte Country?!

- What’s with all the “age” digs that Mary keeps throwing at Rita.  Yes, she’s old.  What’s your point?

- How moody and rudey was Sophie towards Sian?

  1. I thought it was a touching scene to see Tina give Rita that memorabilia - seeing photos of Len showed how rich Corrie's history is and producers and writers should appreciate it more often.

  2. I dislike that Norris changed the sign back, Rita should get over it, it's Norris' shop now.

Agree Anonymous, i wish Norris would stop pandering to the grande dame Rita. Couldnt stand Sophie's yelling again yesterday, she seems to be becoming less and less attractive and more butch looking. As usual Sian's marvellous delivery "Ahem soe sorrah" - What a tiresome pair they are.

  4. I don't get the characters doing a total 180.Tina...I thought she cared for Graeme but just chucked him to the wolves so a 'mate' that we've never heard of before could stay in the country...Tracy Barlow chatting it up with 'Doris'.And since when would David Platt take any mouth flap from an one of his girlfriends?Gail sits there taking insult after insult looking like a fish out of water..didn't she chuck a pie into Diedre's face not too long ago because she felt insulted? And Audrey handing the salon over to David?OMG. OK..here's a plot line.Audrey has a change of mind realizing David and Kylie would destroy the business in a week(he did it before but I guess she forgot about that) and Kylie, being the nut she is gets pissed and torches the place, BUT...the cops finger David (again).David and Kylie have a public row and later, she is found strangled. Again, David gets fingered but...who really done it?
Now..that wasn't so hard was it?

  5. I really don't understand Tina and Graeme's motivations in this storyline. Wanting to help a mate is one thing, but giving up their own relationship to achieve it? How do they expect that to work? Makes no sense at all.

(btw did you know you'd referred to baby Hope as Faye a couple of times in that last para?)

  6. Does anyone else feel that these storylines are barreling along at breakneck speed, so fast that they have no credibility at all for me. This Chinese girl appears from nowhere, has the personality of a pet rock, and suddenly Graeme is marrying her, she has grinned through their contrived breakup, and has totally transformed their flat, all in, what - half an hour?
David comes back from holiday, (did I miss the episode where he said he was going on holiday) In tow he has a fiancée who just happens to be related to someone who lives on the same Weatherfield back street. Popped to the kitchen to put the kettle on, and came back to find the wedding is set and sealed-and soon!
Then David, who thus far has had the job of washing hair, sweeping up hair and making tea is suddenly a fully qualified stylist, and is considered capable of taking over the salon, along with his soon to be wife whose only skills so far have been a penchant for extortion.
What the heck is going on? Are they going for the record of cramming the most stupid storylines into the shortest time?

  7. The same thing happened when Sarah worked in the salon. From washing hair and sweepiing up to stylist without ever having been seen to take a course or write a test. Tyrone started helping out Kevin in the garage when he was a teenager and is now a fully qualified mechanic. No apprenticeship, no courses or exams.

  8. David *has* been studying to be a stylist for quite some time, and it was mentioned he passed his exams a while ago (I think it was while Samia was on her maternity leave). It's amazing that he managed to get his studies done, what with him nipping in and out of young offenders and so on, but it has been accounted for...

  9. Corrie is in terminal decline at moment - so many stupid storylines. Phil Collinson is ruining everything that was once special about the programme. Get rid of him!
