As I’m sure everyone who reads this blog knows by now, both Eddie Windass and Graeme Proctor will be bidding farewell to the cobbles within the next few months. I was gutted when I heard about these two departures as it means that out of my top 3 current male characters only Peter will remain. Fortunately my top 3 females of Sian, Sophie and Tina will all remain, although Sian has now decided a couple of weeks in Spain is a better option that living at the Websters - the girl clearly has sense!
I was particularly surprised when I heard that the decision on Eddie’s departure was made by the producers not Steve Huison himself. This surprised me as Eddie seems to be a hugely popular character and the adoption storyline seems to be in full swing with Faye (played by Sophie Webster’s real-life cousin) making occasional appearances.
To me this double departure presents a problem for Corrie- where does the comedy come from? Everyone knew it was impossible to adequately replace the incomparable Blanche following the sad death of Maggie Jones, but Corrie has always had brilliant comedy characters who make you laugh just by being them.
To me Eddie’s finest moment came when he was effectively hired by Sally to put off a couple viewing No. 4. The genius of it was that he was simply being Eddie and he had no idea what was actually going on! That said the look on Anna’s face when Sally gave her a can of beer was priceless. He is one of those characters you really shouldn’t like because he is a lazy layabout. However, he also has a heart of gold and loves his family, in his own occasionally odd way.

As for Graeme, he may not be a heart throb but, like Eddie, he has a heart of gold which managed to land him Tina. Let’s be honest his light heartedness was probably a breath of fresh air for her after demon David and nice but dim Jason!
To me the only character seemingly capable of filling the comedy void is Norris. I’m pleased the Kabin will soon be reopening as I’ve missed the brilliant Rita-Norris double act since she narrowly escaped death by bon bons in the tram crash. Even though it’s highly likely there will be more comedy to come, Graeme and Eddie will both be missed.

Well put... My thoughts actually. Eddie and Graeme will be truly missed. Hopefully they will realize their mistake and bring back Steve Huison sooner than later.
ReplyDeleteFor Craig, I wish him the best and look forward to seeing him in his future roles. And maybe reprise his role as Graeme at a later date...
I like your comments for Steve and Craig, although sadly, I feel they will kill Eddie off.
ReplyDeleteAnd his finest moment was the time he used other peoples dustbins for his rubbish. Classic Corrie comedy
Still, why do you need to mention Sian and Sophie in EVERY blog you make?
We get you like them, but there are 60 Corrie characters...
I really think they've screwed up getting rid of Eddie. And the loss of Graeme is equally bad news for the show.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I disagree that Norris is "comedy". Gawd, nothing he says is even remotely funny and he's got a real slappable face.
As for Sophie and Sian ... ugh, no comment.

Eddie and Graeme are so entertaining. Do you remember Graeme's conversation with Roy about cocoa and hot chocolate. Just thrown in there. The comedy is needed to lighten the mood when there is devastation looming in one form or another. Eddie and Graeme were perfect characters for this. I think there is only Sally left.

ReplyDeleteIn the past I have asked for Ryan Thomas' brother to be written into the show as Jasons' brother but he is now a major character in Emmerdale but another brother has appeared in real-life and he's already dating Sophie (Brooke)!
ReplyDeleteScriptwriters get onto it immediately - Casting Director do your job now please . . Jasons' brother from the same father (not mother) turns up looking for him . . .

Brooke Vincent has repeatedly denied going out with Scott Thomas, as recently as today. It was all a prank started by Ryan, which he has admitted to. Besides, Scott is not an actor, he is in promotions.

ReplyDeleteThey arent going to kill himself, the door will be left open for him to return in the future I have read.
Graeme can walk -- he's still young and he's got a career to climb. Eddie Windass character can do so much more. This is an odd time to get rid of him.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with above re: Sophie and Sian... boring and going nowhere fast... the two are cute but they're not doing anything/going anywhere -- it's a classic problem with TV soaps -- hard to write in interesting stories for teens... hard but not impossible... if the writers had more imagination
I still cannot for the life of me understand why Eddie Windasss is to go, and Tracy has her contract renewed after all the furore over her acting over Christmas. Are the directors and full of himself Phill Collinson in touch with the fans and viewers at all? It seems they dont care a jot what we think. Corrie will always have an audience as its been an institution for 50 years but its becoming pretty obvious why they walk away empty handed every awards time.
ReplyDeletefire Phill...not Eddie
ReplyDeleteI too am going to miss these gentlemen hugely, but we have Sylvie Cropper, played by the brilliant Stephanie Cole, to look forward to, and we've been hearing hints that she will be very funny in the Blanche mould. Anyone know when we can expect her first appearance?
ReplyDeleteApart from possibly being glad that lesbianism has finally been acknowledged in Weatherfield, and admittedly Sian is very pretty, what else is there to like about these Sophie and Sian? Both of them are more often than not totally incomprehensible, they are not representative of any lesbian couple I have ever met, and their characters barely interact with any other cast apart from their immediate family.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it that you like about them Matt1989. I genuinely am curious.
See, I *like* the Sophie Sian relationship.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm gay, yes, it's good to have some sort of representation.
And just because people have not met a couple like them does not mean couples like them do not exist. (I've been with my first gf for years and we started going out at 16... so yeah, it *does* happen. ;))
I just do not understand why a blog about Eddie and Graham has to have content about Sophie & Sian in it.
The blog is about 'Lamenting the loss of Corrie’s comedic men' so why the need to insert 'Fortunately my top 3 females of Sian, Sophie and Tina will all remain'. Why Matt1989? It has no bearing on the blog itself. I actually don't CARE if they're your favourites. I have mine, everyone else has their own, the difference being most other people do not ram it constantly down other peoples throats.
Phew, I'm not gonna get into the fray. This isn't the NY Times Art Section.
ReplyDeleteJust gotta say I'm reeeally going to miss Eddie and Graeme. Biiig mistake letting them go. Bigger one extending Tracey's contract.
