Developing Sian Powers

Anyone on Digital Spy knows about my liking for Sian, who from the perspective of a 21-year-old provides something very nice to look at when she appears on screen. However, one problem seems to be how they show she is more than just a pretty face- and Sophie’s girlfriend.

Last month saw the second anniversary of Sian’s first appearance on the street, but since she split from Helmet Head, or Ryan as it says on his birth certificate, she hasn’t had much to do with any character that doesn’t have the surname Webster. The easiest solution would be for her to get a job on the street, that way they can have her interact with any characters who happen to be in that particular place of work. Here are the possibilities:

Audrey’s salon: They have been one stylist down ever since Natasha’s truly brilliant exit, so why not take someone else on, especially with Maria due to take over Michelle’s job at the factory

Dev’s shop: They’ve employed her girlfriend so why not? Then again that might cause problems if Sophie wants her old job back

The garage: Non-starter. I can’t see her wanting to work with the guy who destroyed her girlfriend’s family

The Kabin: Probably my favourite option, I can imagine Sian and Rita teaming up to put Norris in his place. I certainly wouldn’t want to be on the end of her feisty side!

Roy’s Rolls: Again they have been one staff member down since Kylie decided Ayia Napa was a better option than Manchester (good call, loved Ayia Napa when I went there). Plus I think Sian/Hayley interaction would be really good

The factory: Could work from the point of view of her interacting with a lot of other characters but I doubt Carla would take on anyone else

The Rovers: I’m sure having Sian and Tina behind the bar would encourage young male customers, but due to a little thing called the law this wouldn’t be able to happen until December 28th. Could work in the future though as I can see Sian as a barmaid

Any of these would definitely get her interacting with a lot more people and help develop her as a character apart from the Websters. Don’t get me wrong, Siophie are easily my favourite couple on the show, but as her and Sophie are for the long term, I think this needs to happen.

It has been reported she will befriend a girl who she meets on her forthcoming holiday, but if/how much we actually see her remains to be seen. Whatever happens I completely trust Phil Collinson and the writers to keep doing a brilliant job

  1. Did Sacha Parkinson sign a long term contract do you know? I like you would love to see her around for a long time to come.

  2. Interesting piece, I agree that Sian's character needs to be incorporated more but that could be said for a few other characters as well. Katy,Izzy,Julie,Cheryl are all plot drivers not forefront characters and dont have much going for them except to drive other characters story lines. It would be nice if everyone could have an interesting storyline of some sort or significance but that would make the show disjointed.I guess if you are a "Siophie" fan you should probably just appreciate how many scenes they have been in over the last few months.

I hope she did NOT sign a long term contract. She is a pretty young girl but that's all she has going for her, an actresss she aint. Gormlessly sitting on the sofa or the worktops, delivering her lines in a monotone whine with a vacant expression on her face is NOT acting and I think certain people male and female are having their judgement clouded by her fanciability rather than her talent, of which so far she seems to have little

  4. There are quite a few kids on the street. She could win back the Alahan's trust and become the go to babysitter, or a maybe youth sports coach.

It would be confusing at the Rovers, with a Sean and Sian double act.

  5. Surely the script writers could find a storyline for Sian without her getting one of the seemingly endless supply of dead end jobs around Coronation Street. Why can't she and Sophie go to the University of Weatherfield? I don't want Corrie to turn into Hollyoaks, but it seems to be soap law that

    a) the young people of Coronation Street should have no aspirations whatsoever;

    b) people without any qualifications or obvious abilities leave and then miraculously return with large amounts of money to buy part ownership of a factory or an entire bar. (Nick Tilsley, although the strain has made him look about 20 years older than he is).

Mocking and stifling any aspirations (eg Sally Webster, Janice Battersby wanting to be a nurse) is one of the show's worst failings.

  6. Would like her to realize that she isn't really a lesbian and has to confront Sophie with the truth. It would be a real tear jerker. Remember Anne Heche (Ellen's ex?) Just sayin'...

  7. I agree with Frosty. And besides, why does she need to have a job on the Street, it's more realistic that she carries on with her studies and gets a part time job 'in town' or wherever. It doesn't really bother me that she is just an extension of Sophie and Webster's.

  8. I agree with this, it would be so nice to see her interacting with other members on the street. And their story is my favorite!

  9. Why would people want favourite characters to have such dead end jobs? lol

  10. well said Frosty. She is a shocker - can't act to save her life. Getting Sian to interact with other other characters may mean that she will have to leave her Cushion at home and I don't think that she can act without hugging it!

  11. I agree with Frosty.

  12. It saddens me that very few of the young people in Corrie have any goals to do better than their parents. Few odd exceptions Toya, Todd(did have plans until he hooked up with Sara)Amber(who I loved but has disappeared). Hopefully Chesney will better himself!
