How the street could have looked in 1980

Digital Spy member screech2009 has found a real gem of a picture from a 1970's edition of TV Times, which celebrated 1000 episodes of Coronation Street.

The picture to the left is how the original set designer Denis Parkin pictured the street would look by 1980. though proved wrong, some of the things he predicted did happen.

For instance, he mention that a new block of flats would have been built around the corner, and we have that now with Victoria Court. He also predicted the viaduct will have been filled in with a shop.

  1. Funny thing is, if Coronation Street were real, it probably would have trees and parking spaces as a "Home Zone". In fact, where DOES everyone park their car?

  2. Interestingly enough is the mention of a second ITV channel, which didn't happen until the late 90s! Although I remember seeing remote controls with ITV2 for Channel 4, even though that chnnel didn't appear until 1982.

It makes you wonder what someone might envision the street exterior's to appear like by the end of the year!

  3. Strange that he never envisioned no. 7 being rebuilt.

  4. The botique shop under the viaduct kinda reminds me of the Bistro.
