Coronation Street move to Media City confirmed

Breaking news today makes the long standing rumours official. Granada Studios is moving from Manchester to Salford's Media City. They estimate their arrival date to be 2012, according to the Guardian (thanks to regular blog reader Annie for the heads up! You can read the whole history of this move on her blog, over here.) A new studio will be built in addition to offices. There is also a video news release at ITV's site here and there's a bit more detail here.

  1. Thank god! The current set was good, but the area around it has become over developed, meaning cameras have to be careful what they show

  2. Yeah it's about time.

Channel 4's Shameless has a special production facility with a dedicated studio/office building and outdoor backlot. Loads of space and everyone who works on the show in one place.

It'll do Corrie a world of good to get away from the old Quay Street building, and have more space and privacy to make the show together.

  3. The rumour is that Granada/ITV have been in talks with the Museum of Science and Industry (which backs onto the site), with a view to handing the set over to them as an attraction.

  4. ITV should, as a gesture to the nstion, and their history, donate the set to the Museum.

It might cost them money, but if that set cannot be bought and gets demolished, I don't think the nation will ever forgive them.
