Newfoundlanders love Corrie too

I was sent the link to this article, thanks to a regular blog reader. It was published in the Daily Mail (UK). The author had planned a visit to the lovely Canadian eastern province of Newfoundland to do a bit of whale watching and sea kayaking and he discovered that the city of St. John's is a veritable hotbed of Coronation Street fans.

He was very surprised to discover a gift shop on the waterfront selling Coronation Street souvenirs! Yes, indeed, Corrie is quite popular with Canadians from coast to coast. You might even say Canadian fans are "Corrie Crazy"! St. John's is one of the cities that has been lucky enough to welcome stars of Coronation Street occasionally, along with Halifax, Nova Scotia and Toronto, Ontario where a British Isles trade show has had a Corrie actor as one of the guests for 20 years.

The gift shop (Island Designs and Gifts) is on Water Street and owner Randell Porter described Newfoundlanders' love of the other Street this way: "They’re colourful characters but they’re just real people with real lives. I work in a shop here and they work in shops too. It’s not like these American soaps that you just can’t believe. And, of course, we’ve got a British cultural heritage too."

The article is a nice travelogue of his experiences plus that little bit of Corrie thrown in for good measure.
