Coronation Street wins international TV award

Coronation Street is to get a special award at the Rose d’Or Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Wednesday next week. Simon Gregson and Katherine Kelly (Steve and Becky McDonald) will be flown out to pick up the award recognising half a century of soap success.

Festival director Rolf Probala said it was a unanimous decision to present the show with the Rose d’Or Golden Jubilee Award. He said: “Over its entire run, the series has shown originality, creativity and innovation, all the qualities which are the foundation of our awards. A further testimony is that the programme, 50 years after its first transmission, is as popular as ever and is still a huge ratings hit in the UK. Furthermore, Coronation Street is regarded as the gold standard by other similar programmes outside Britain.”

  1. OMG, Becky (Katherine Kelly)?????? It's an award recognizing 50 years. She's been in it for five minutes by comparison. Why not Ken (William Roach) and/or Rita/Betty? They are far more deserving to be the show's representatives. Am really quite unsure about my feelings for this new producer, Phil...

  3. Completely agree with anonymous, it's obvious that TPTB think highly of Steve and Becky with the amount of storylines they get, but this says a lot when they chose them over longer standing cast members to collect a prestigious award. Corrie is an ensemble cast, but it's starting to feel like it's all about these two, and I'm not just talking about their characters.

  4. I agree with you all, William Roache and Anne Kirkbride should be picking it up. Though I think Steve and Becky are currently acting as the 'faces of Coronation Street' just like the Baldwins, Connors, and Platts before them, though hopefully it doesn't mean TPTB will overuse them
